Clouds are approaching from the west, but still plenty of clear
skies sustaining the moderate to large ridge to valley temperature
differences this night on the order of 10 to 15 degrees.
Accordingly, have updated the forecast grids with the latest obs
and trends for the T/Td/Sky grids. Did also adjust the PoPs toward
dawn in line with the latest CAMs consensus. These updates have
been sent to the NDFD and web servers with a freshening of the
zones and SAFs.

UPDATE Issued at 745 PM EDT THU MAR 30 2023

23Z sfc analysis shows deep low pressure approaching from the west
as high pressure retreats eastward. A warm front from the low will
be lifting into eastern Kentucky later tonight. Until then,
though, mostly clear skies, light winds, and dry air will allow
for a period of ridge to valley temperature splits for much of the
night. Currently, readings vary from the low 60s on the hills to
the lower 50s in the sheltered spots. Meanwhile, dewpoints are
running in the mid teens on the ridges to the low and mid 20s in
the valleys. The CAMs are in good agreement that the initial
rounds of convection will move into our western counties just
before dawn and in the process balance out the temperatures while
bringing up dewpoints dramatically. For this update have mainly
just added the latest obs and trends for T/Td/Sky grids. These
adjustments have been sent to the NDFD and web servers.

.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Friday night)

Key Messages:

-Rain and thunderstorm chances increase Friday
-Some of these storms could be severe Friday evening into Friday
 night, with main threat of damaging wind gusts

The afternoon the surface analysis shows an area of high pressure
remains crested across the Lower Great Lakes region and low
pressure noted developing along the leeside of the Rockies. This
low and eventual cold front will be our bigger play maker in the
short term period, but we will talk more about this later. This
high pushes east and reinforces along the Mid-Atlantic coast. This
will keep out weather quiet much of the night. The system
intensifies in the Plains and will lead to a increasing low level
jet tonight brining mainly increasing mid and high level clouds
based on the HREF probs. However, this increasing low level jet
will also help to spur on rain shower development toward dawn on
Friday morning, with increasing moisture and upper level
divergence noted. This will lead to a more unorthodox temperature
curve tonight, where valley locations will cool early in the
evening and increase toward dawn Friday. Low temperatures are
forecast to drop into the low to mid 40s in the valleys and near
50 on the ridges.

Friday, we will see the first batch of showers and possibly a few
thunderstorms push across eastern Kentucky. The chances will be
best early in the day, with a lull possible in the afternoon. This
will happen as divergence and low level jet decrease through the
day before the next round. This will lead to some tricky high
temperatures, with NBM being a little too aggressive on the
afternoon highs. However, there could be some mix of clouds and
sun late in the day that could be all the difference in getting a
little warmer. Right now think highs in the mid to upper 60s looks
probable. Overall biggest issues will be if we do get some
clearing would expect it will be breezy, with gusts in the 20 to
30 mph range through the afternoon.

Friday night, this is obviously the one everyone is focused on
for the short term period. This as a vertically stacked surface
low pushes toward the Upper Great Lakes and attendant cold front
moves east into the Ohio Valley. The CAMs do show a line of
convection or QLCS pushing across parts of western Kentucky by 00
to 01Z. This QLCS like setup is supported by both the kinematic
and thermodynamic fields, and this will be the primary mode of
convection as it moves from west to east across the Lower Ohio
Valley. So let's talk about the thermodynamics, it looks like
instability wanes quite a bit as this QLCS tracks eastward, with
MLCAPE values generally under 250 J/kg and maybe 100 J/kg of this
being in the 0-3 km favorable layer for QLCS spin ups. The
kinematics are certainly impressive with 0-3 km bulk shear values
in 50 to 60 knot range out of the southwest and this is increasing
the CAPE/Shear values in the EFI into the 0.7 to 0.8 range for
this time of year. This all as the 850mb jet greatly increases
across Kentucky and NAEFS suggests this is a 99th percentile or 3
SD range for 850 mb jets. The one fly in the ointment with the
jet orientation and the QLCS is some of this line of convection
could end up being less orthogonal. This would decrease the wind
and tornado potential unless you manage to modify that orientation
with a surge or bow along the line. This is likely why we see an
overall lower risk on the eastern side of the state when compared
with the western half of the state. Right now we are seeing a
slight risk sneaking into the western parts of the CWA and
marginal otherwise. The main risk of wind at around 5 to 15
percent in a 25 mile radius. The tornado risk is 2 percent in the
far western parts of the CWA and we average around 3 to 4 days in
March with a risk of 2 percent. This is highly conditional on
surges or bows and will have to be watched as we get closer to
seeing how this will all develop and evolve. Now overall there
remains some risk of gusty winds even outside of convection in the
30 to 40 mph range. This could require the need for a Wind
Advisory as early as Friday night, but still some uncertainty on
this remains. Given this and in coordination with surrounding
offices will hold off on any products at this time. However, we
continue to message this risk in our IDSS Packets. The overall
threat for heavy rain looks quite low given the more progressive
nature of this system and the grand ensemble shows no signal for
24 hour rainfall of 2 inches or greater. The latest FFG data
suggests most places are in the 1.5 or greater range for 1 hour
guidance and the 6 hour guidance is well over 2 inches.

.LONG TERM...(Saturday through Thursday)

The elephant in the room in the extended will be the strong and
gusty winds we are expecting to spread across the area on
Saturday. These strong winds will be in response to the passage of
a large and very powerful area of low pressure aloft that will be
passing across the eastern third of the CONUS going into the
upcoming weekend. A strong cold front will also push through on
the surface, and will also be partly responsible for the winds due
to the pressure gradient along the front. Sustained winds of 20 to
30 mph out of the southwest and west will likely gust to 40 to 50
mph at times, with locally higher gusts possible. The winds will
be at their strongest Saturday afternoon and early evening, but
should steadily taper off Saturday night, as the upper low moves
quickly off to the northeast. As the winds shift to the northwest
overnight, they will usher cold air into the area from Canada. The
slackening winds, along with rapidly clearing skies, could lead to
frost formation across eastern Kentucky late Saturday night into
early Sunday morning. A ridge of high pressure will then bring dry
and pleasant weather our way Sunday and Sunday night. This dry
spell will be short lived, however, as another large trough of
low pressure is forecast to bring bouts of cloud skies and rain
back to us through out the week. The most active period should be
from Wednesday through Friday, as surface front moves very slowly
through the region. The large are of low pressure will also bring
plenty of wind with it, so we won't get much of a break from that
either, especially during the middle of the week.

Temperatures on average should be normal to above normal through
out the extended. The warmest days will see highs peaking in the
upper 70s and lower 80s(Tuesday and Wednesday). We're also
expecting a couple of days to max out in the upper 60s and lower
70s. Nightly lows will exhibit quite a spread. We are expecting
lows in the low to mid 30s Sunday morning, which will bring a
threat of widespread frost to the area to finish out the weekend.
After that, morning lows will range from the upper 30s to lower
40s on Monday, to well above normal values in the upper 40s, 50s,
and low to mid 60s.

.AVIATION...(For the 00Z TAFS through 00Z Friday evening)
ISSUED AT 825 PM EDT THU MAR 30 2023

VFR conditions will remain the story through the first half of the
period, with high pressure in control but retreating to the east.
An approaching potent, spring storm system will then bring strong
wind fields along with it that could lead to periods of LLWS late
tonight and into Friday morning from between 06 and 16Z. This
strong system will also promote some showers at times early Friday
and as result could lead to localized drops in CIGs and VIS.
Overall, sfc winds will remain light for most of the night under
fleeting high pressure. The sfc winds increase Friday afternoon,
as gusts mix down from aloft out of the southwest at 15 to 25
knots.

.DAY ONE...Tonight.

No hazardous weather is expected at this time.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Friday through Wednesday.

A strong low pressure system and fast-moving cold front will bring
increasing thunderstorm chances Friday afternoon through early
Saturday morning. Some of these storms could produce strong to
damaging wind gusts as they pass through.

Strong southwesterly wind gusts are expected to develop behind the
front Friday night and Saturday. Wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph are
probable, especially from late Saturday morning through late
Saturday afternoon. Isolated gusts of 50 to 55 mph are also
possible, primarily in the highest terrain near the Virginia border,
and along exposed ridgetops.

The threat of frost will return Saturday night into Sunday morning.

Warmer and more unsettled weather returns next week, with a renewed
threat for thunderstorms Tuesday night and Wednesday.
