AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION...UPDATED National Weather Service Jackson KY 206 PM EDT Fri Mar 31 2023 .UPDATE... Issued at 1215 PM EDT FRI MAR 31 2023 Hourly grids have been fine tuned to account for recent, radar, model, observation, and lighting data. Lighting was occurring in convection near and a tier of counties either side of the Louis Nunn Pkwy/KY to Rogers Pkwy in our southwest and west a bit further east than the previous forecast. Also, with this ongoing convection, pops were increased for the next couple of hours in the southwest compared to the previous forecast. This stronger convection may lead to a corridor of a bit higher qpf from the Pulaski County area to near JKL to the WV border during the day today and lead to some higher totals for the entire event as compared to the previous forecast. The 12Z HRRR also has some higher event totals than the previous runs. Trends for QPF, wind gusts Sat, timing of stronger gusts on Sat, as well as magnitude continue to be evaluated for the afternoon issuance. As for severe chances late this evening to overnight, the greater potential remains along the western tier of counties, primarily for damaging winds though an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out. However, strong to damaging winds gusts remain possible deeper into the CWA overnight. && .SHORT TERM...(This afternoon through Saturday evening) Issued at 843 AM EDT FRI MAR 31 2023 A complex short term period is expected to play out ahead of a robust low pressure system, with a line of storms expected overnight tonight, and strong Wind Advisory criteria winds tonight through Saturday. A strong closed upper level low will be present across the Central and Northern Plains during the day today, creating deep troughing across the central portion of the Conus. This will coincide to 991mb surface low slightly displaced to the east at 18Z Friday. This will continue to strengthen to 985-957mb by the time it reaches the Upper Great Lakes region early Saturday morning and throughout the day. A warm front associated with this system will set up across the Ohio Valley through the day. Strong southerly flow in the low levels, and SW flow aloft, will help to advect in deep moisture. Rain showers and a few rumbles of thunder are likely throughout the first half of the day as KY finds itself in the warm generally wet sector. Latest CAMs show the best potential for showers/storms slowly lifting northward throughout the day, with a period of drying by late afternoon and into the evening. The associated cold front will then come sweeping through overnight, with a line of showers and storms. All signs for the last few days have pointed towards a QLCS type system. Looking at the system yesterday, if any portions of the line bulge, they could become a bit more orthogonal with the mean flow, and may lead to some stronger winds with more momentum transfer. This will be something to watch. Otherwise, instability continues to wain the farther east the system gets into Kentucky, but with so much shear available, and bowing segments, can't rule out an isolated short tornado. The system could have some heavy rain associated with it, but it is quite progressive, so total amounts will still be quite low, generally 1.25 inches or lower over 24-36 hours. After collaborating with WPC, they agreed to back off on the slight risk of excessive rainfall across much of our CWA. The cold front and associated rain/storms will exit the CWA by 12Z. A few CAMS do show some wrap around moisture possibly advecting back into the central and eastern portion of the state by late in the day Saturday, but moisture seems to be lacking. Went ahead and left out for now, though neighboring offices do include it farther to our north. Otherwise the big concern on Saturday is going to be post- frontal winds. A strong upper level jet streak will develop across the Commonwealth and TN valley, farther up the Appalachia chain, following some tight pressure gradients aloft. But more importantly, at the surface a strong low level jet will be in place. Technically, it will first set up overnight Friday night, which means that any showers or that move through could mix down some pretty strong winds outside of any storms. Then as we head into the morning hours, and better mixing takes hold behind the front, momentum transfer will maximize and winds will begin mixing down the surface. The jet will shift northeast throughout the day, eventually exiting eastern KY by the afternoon hours. Ultimately, the trend the last couple forecast packages and models runs has been somewhat steady state if not slightly lower than a couple days ago. Still looking at solid wind advisory criteria through the afternoon on Saturday - with gusts between 40 to 50 mph. Once the jet exits and flow becomes more zonal aloft, winds will settle down aloft. High pressure will also ease in from our west and begin to take hold by the evening, as we transition to the extended portion of the forecast. .LONG TERM...(Saturday night through Thursday) Issued at 530 AM EDT FRI MAR 31 2023 The period will begin under the influence of high pressure where low to mid 30s Sunday morning could equate to areas or widespread frost formation and pose issues for sensitive vegetation. There is some question to how quick cloud cover will thin out overnight Saturday, which would play a roll in how cool temperatures get and the overall frost potential. Meanwhile, in the upper levels the strong low and attendant cold front that is expected to bring unsettled weather to the area as of forecast issuance, will now be well north and west near the vicinity of Maine. Heights will be on the rise as ridging encompasses the Ohio Valley, before modifying into more zonal flow by Monday. Broad ridging will be in place across the Gulf of Mexico, while a series of shortwaves progress along the USA/Canadian border through Tuesday. A frontal boundary will sag and settle across the Ohio Valley as an area of low pressure pulls northeast of the Great Lakes, bringing low end shower chances Monday. Further upstream, a closed upper low will enter the Pacific Northwest where a deepening trough will result through midweek. A surface low will be supported, taking on lee side cyclogenesis along the aforementioned boundary in the Central Plains into Tuesday evening. As this feature strengthens into Wednesday, the northern boundary will build north in the form of a warm front. With increasing southerly return flow behind the building frontal zone, temperatures will climb into the upper 70s and low 80s with dew points in the 50s to low 60s. PWATs will increase into the 1.2-1.5" range, around the 90th percentile climatologically for early April. In terms of model trend, guidance was not as aggressive in low strength compared to recent runs, with the deterministic ECMWF the strongest but also most progressive. The GFS and GEFS ensemble suit is much slower with frontal passage, closer to early Thursday morning, so have veered close to the NBM which was more a compromise of the differences. Either way, there will be another opportunity for gusty winds as the gradient tightens into Wednesday. Southerly winds should average 10 to 15KT to begin the period for the TAF sites and remain near those levels during the first 6 to 9 hours of the period. Otherwise, additional showers and some thunderstorms should mix down higher winds from aloft during the 3Z to 9Z timeframe with gusts upwards of 45KT as a cold front traverses the area with convection along and in advance of it. Winds in the 10 to 20KT range should prevail during the 0Z to 12Z period, though winds will become more southwest to west as the front passes. A line or line segments of storms may accompany the front with associated reductions in VIS and or ceilings at briefly into the MVFR or lower range. A strong low pressure system and fast-moving cold front will bring increasing thunderstorm chances through early Saturday morning. Some of these storms, mainly late this evening and tonight, could produce strong to damaging wind gusts as they pass through. An isolated tornado cannot be ruled out with thunderstorms late this evening and tonight.
