still possible. Have updated the forecast grids mainly to fine
tune the PoPs through the rest of the night per radar and CAMs
trends. Did also include the latest obs and trends for the T/Td
grids with this update. These adjusted grids have been sent to the
NDFD and web servers along with a forthcoming freshening of the
zones and SAFs.

UPDATE Issued at 645 PM EST WED MAR 1 2023

23Z sfc analysis shows a quick moving wave of low pressure passing
by to the north of the area this evening with a trailing boundary
to the southwest generally along the northwest Kentucky border.
This has helped to generate a broken line of strong to severe
thunderstorms that continue to expand to the northeast while the
whole system pushes east. Ahead of this, temperatures soared to
record highs this afternoon across eastern Kentucky - helped by
southerly winds of around 10 mph with some gusts to between 20 and
25 mph. Readings have backed off to the lower 70s on the ridges
currently with the sheltered eastern valleys reporting mid 60s.
Meanwhile, initially dry dewpoints are increasing from west to
east varying from the mid 50s in the western parts of the
Cumberland Valley to the low and mid 40s in the east. Under mostly
cloudy skies look for the showers and storms to continue to
develop and impinge on the area from the west late this evening
and work east through this part of the state into the early
morning hours. For this reason, and in-line with the latest CAMs
guidance, have adjusted the PoPs through the night. The severe
threat will be rather limited for our area as the instability
wanes with time but initially the storms could be rather strong so
stay alert for possible warnings primarily from 9 pm through
midnight with damaging wind gusts the main threat. With this
update to the grids have also adjusted the thunders chances and
included the latest obs and trends for the T/Td grids. These
adjustments have been sent to the NDFD and web servers with a
freshening of the zones and SAFs to follow shortly.

.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Thursday night)
Issued at 430 PM EST WED MAR 1 2023

Late this afternoon, an upper level ridge was centered in the
vicinity of the Caribbean with southwest flow from the southern
Plains into the Southeast and mid Atlantic states between this ridge
and general troughing from central Canada to the southwest Conus.
Moving within this southwest flow was a shortwave trough locations
in the Arklatex vicinity while another shortwave was located in the
upper MS Valley vicinity. Another shortwave extended from Canada
into the Northern Rockies while another closed low was moving across
Southern California. At the sfc, a wavy frontal zone extended from
the Carolinas and then north through the Appalachians to a sfc wave
just east of Lake Erie and then the wavy frontal zone extended to
multiple sfc wave back to the Arklatex to the Southern Plains.
Another sfc frontal zone extended from Quebec to Ontario to the
Great Lakes and then west to the Central Plains and northwest to MT.

Tonight, the shortwave in southwest flow will begin to merger with
the wave to the north and work across the OH Valley during the
evening into the overnight with the axis of this wave moving east
early on Thursday. At the same time, the next shortwave in the
northern Stream moves toward the Dakotas and the upper level low
moves across the southwest and into the southern Rockies by
midday Thursday. The northern shortwave will pass by to the north
later Thursday into Thursday evening while the upper level low
moves into the Southern Plains. This upper low should move to the
AR/Ozarks area to end the short term period. Meanwhile at the sfc,
the frontal zone to the northwest of the area will approach
tonight and should enter the CWA near dawn and pass east and
southeast of eastern KY by afternoon before it stalls near the
TN/KY border or just to the south in response to developing low
pressure in northern TX and Red River Valley. This low should
track northeast toward the Ozarks with a potential triple point
low developing and reaching southeast MO/Northeast AR by late in
the period. To the east the warm front will lift north toward the
region.

The shortwave tonight combined with the approaching frontal zone
will lead to showers developing or moving into the area this evening
and then shifting east and southeast through the night into early on
Thursday. Instability is a bit limited, but some thunder is also
possible. With some dry dewpoints at the sfc and some higher
momentum aloft the strongest cells could produce some locally gusty
winds later this evening through near or just after midnight. Pops
in the categorical range were used for tonight, but the longest
period of higher pops in for the southern half of the area where
increasing moisture and forcing should better align to produce a bit
more QPF than the far north. As the front moves into the area later
tonight and crosses the area on Thursday, pops decrease behind the
departing wave. This lull lingers into the evening, before
isentropic lift ahead of the stalled boundary returning and lifting
toward the area as a warm front leads to a round of showers and
perhaps some isolated thunder near the TN border. There is some
uncertainty as to how far the front gets before dawn on Friday, but
it may enter the Lake Cumberland region and near the TN border.

Temperatures will be below normal during the long term period,
though highs behind the front on Thursday will not be a far of a
departure from normal compared to today. As for night time lows,
rainfall during both periods leads to wetbulbing contributing to
lows. A bit of an early drop in the northeast or eastern valleys may
occur both nights, though temperatures and mins should generally
even out as both nights progress.

.LONG TERM...(Friday through Wednesday)

Key Messages:

1. An unusually intense storm system will affect eastern Kentucky
through Friday night.

2. Confidence is high for environmental wind gusts exceeding 40 mph
on Friday into Friday evening.

3. Confidence is increasing for environmental wind gusts of 50 to 60
mph above 2,000 feet and also across the Cumberland Basin.

3. Locally heavy rainfall and nuisance flooding is possible,
isolated flash flooding cannot be ruled out.

4. The slight risk for severe weather, primarily damaging winds and
isolated tornadoes, continues across most of eastern Kentucky on
Friday.

5. The weekend starts off cooler and drier before a warming trend
returns for the start of the new week.

An atypically deep low pressure system (still modeled at a strength
near or outside of the 40-year CSFR climatology for this time of
year) will lift across the Ohio Valley during the first 18 hours of
the long-term period. Even still, the models continue to struggle
with the storm's track and eventual strength, both of which will
prove pivotal for our severe weather threat and high wind potential.
There is also some possibility for minor stream and river flooding
as well as isolated flash flooding.

The latest 500H model analysis beginning Friday morning shows the
"bowling ball" low centered anywhere from Texarkana to Southwest
Missouri. A similar amount of spread is present in the position of
surface low and there are still notable differences on the
forecast depth of the system. Given these discrepancies in the
initial position of the low, there remains atypically large amount
of uncertainty in the modeled track of the surface low. If
anything, the most recent GEFS,GEPS,EPS ensembles have held nearly
steady with the low's track or shifted slightly southeast, closer
to the Ohio River. A track closer to the Ohio River would lead to
enhanced helicity in the 0-1 km layer and a greater potential for
severe thunderstorms posing a tornadic threat. However, the
timing of the system's cold front, will also determine the amount
of daytime heating that occurs and the instability realized ahead
of the boundary -- more heating, more instability and vice versa.
If instability is lacking (a couple hundred J/kg of MUCAPE or
less) as most of the guidance currently suggests, a QLCS along the
cold front would be the most likely convective mode. The
orientation of shower and storm segments relative to the 0-3 km
flow will also be very important with respect to the damaging
thunderstorm wind and tornado potential. If the convective line
segments are oriented north-south, more probable with a more
northwesterly low pressure track, interaction with the low-level
jet will be more limited. Conversely, a lot pressure track closer
to the Ohio River may favor a more northwest-southeast oriented
line segment. This latter orientation would be more perpendicular
to the post- frontal low-level jet and thus more favorable for
straightline winds and QLCS tornadoes. Hopefully, Friday's
forecast picture can become more clear as we come into the range
of the shorter- term CAMs tonight.

Regardless of the convective outcome, this powerful storm system
will bring strong wind gusts both ahead of and behind the cold
front. Ahead of the front, sufficient surface heating (sunshine)
and resultant low-level lapse rate steepening will be needed to
induce better momentum mix down and realize the stronger winds at
the surface. Behind the front, low-level CAA will more easily
steepen lapse rates, leading to better momentum transfer. The
strongest non-convective wind gusts ahead of the front are favored
to occur over the higher elevations above 2,000 feet and then
across the entire Cumberland River Basin behind the front.
Locations further north may remain more stable due to intermittent
convection, depending upon the storm track, warm frontal
positioning and cold frontal timing. BUFKIT Mean Mixed Layer
Momentum Transfer values of 35 to 50 knots (40 to 58 mph),
generally strongest south, are a reasonable proxy for peak winds
gusts. In the ECWMF ENS, probabilities for wind gusts exceeding 50
knots (58 mph) range from 10 percent over northeast Kentucky to
near 50 percent over the higher elevations and Cumberland Basin.
The strongest environmental winds are likely to occur just behind
the cold front during the afternoon and early evening.

Through the remainder of the period, the flow aloft over the Ohio
Valley turns quasi-zonal. High pressure returns for Saturday and
Sunday with cooler temperatures and drier weather. Rain chances
return Monday night into Tuesday as another cold front sags south
of the CWA. Another weak wave of low pressure riding along the
baroclinic zone may bring additional rain chances on Tuesday
night. Forecast rainfall amounts are light for both events.

Temperatures will run above normal through the forecast period.
Temperatures on Friday will depend on the amount of sensible heating
that occurs ahead of the cold front. The current forecast is for
mid 60s north to lower 70s south, but that could be several
degrees warmer or cooler depending on the evolution of our strong
system. Temperatures behind the front fall into the 30s on Friday
night. Fair weather and pleasant temperatures can be expected
through the weekend with highs in the middle 50s on Saturday and
upper 50s to lower 60s on Sunday. Lows in the 30s are forecast for
Saturday night and Sunday night. A few upper 20 readings are
possible in the most sheltered hollows. Maximum temperature warm
well into the 60s again for Monday and Tuesday. Cooler air returns
on Wednesday, likely highs in the 50s for most.

.AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Thursday night)
ISSUED AT 100 AM EST THU MAR 2 2023

A frontal boundary will slide across much of the area tonight,
where showers or any lasting thunderstorms diminish from north to
south into dawn. Most sites begin in low end VFR but a few could
dip into MVFR at times with heavier passing showers. As the
frontal boundary sags further south, CIGs will fall to MVFR for a
time, where SME and LOZ likely see the longest duration of this
category into the morning hours. Guidance was optimistic for
sites further north, namely SYM and JKL, and thus, have hung on to
low end VFR for this issuance. Clearing takes place from
northwest to southeast toward 12Z and after as this leads to
improvement into the VFR range by midday Thursday. Winds will
generally range from 6-12 kts out of the west over the next couple
of hours, before becoming variable at less than 10 kts toward
dawn. With the passing boundary, winds will veer to be more out of
the north by mid morning Thursday and break more northeastward
with time at less 10 kts or less through the remainder of the
period.
