AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Jackson KY 1253 PM EST Thu Mar 2 2023 .UPDATE... Issued at 1057 AM EST THU MAR 2 2023 Much of southeastern Kentucky remains under low cloud cover this morning as the cold front, mentioned in the prior discussion, sags into Tennessee and Virginia. Clouds are thinning and ceilings are rising across the the northwestern half of the forecast area. Other than freshening the grids with the latest observations, no chances were made to the forecast. New data from the incoming 12z model suite is raising confidence in severe weather and high winds on Friday, and an SPS was sent about an hour ago to highlight this potential. These trends and resulting concerns will be more fully outlined in the afternoon short-term discussion. UPDATE Issued at 740 AM EST THU MAR 2 2023 Fog has socked in some south and eastern locations due to low level moisture from rain/storms into last night and early this morning, so have included the mention over the next couple of hours. The boundary continues to sag further south and east this morning, where showers have generally diminished overall. Have freshened up sky and PoP grids based on these recent radar/satellite trends, while also loading and blending in the latest T/Td/Wind obs. Updates along with a fresh set of zones have been sent. && .SHORT TERM...(Today through Friday) Issued at 532 AM EST THU MAR 2 2023 Showers continue to spread further southeast this morning, as a cold front is currently sliding across the area. The latest surface analysis suggests this boundary to be aligned from Northeast Kentucky, through Flemming County and arcing southeast through Lexington and down into South Central Kentucky. The parents low is working just southeast of the Great Lakes and into New England. Temperatures across Eastern Kentucky are generally uniform in the mid 50s with the Bluegrass counties likely to drop a few more degrees post front into the morning hours. Through the short term period a very active and aggressive system is expected to pass through the region. Guidance has come into better agreement, but uncertainties remain in true low track and strength. That said, it does appear a slower evolution seems favored, with the low on a trajectory from the Lower Mississippi Valley to the Ohio Valley Friday morning to the evening, respectively. Aloft, a vigorous shortwave will swing north out of Texas late tonight taking on a sharp negative tilt. This will force an anomalously strong 100- 130 kt mid level jet through the Tennessee Valley and Central Appalachians region. This set up will set the stage for all severe weather threats along with isolated flash flooding/flooding potential. Through this morning, the aforementioned cold front will continue pressing east-southeast before stalling out near the Tennessee border mid morning. Expectations are for this boundary to become aligned from SE Kentucky and southeast into the Tennessee Plateau. This will anchor the focus for precipitation generally south of the area for a time this afternoon, before the anomalous surface low glides northeast out of the ArkLaTex area later tonight. As it does so, the stalled boundary will build back north in the form of a warm front. PWATs will climb to 1.25" (or greater) and warm sector showers or storms will overspread the area from south to north tonight into Friday morning. As this occurs 850 mb winds will increase through the day, where values peak between 60 and 80 kts by the afternoon. As these showers and isolated storms pull north by mid morning focus turns to the low and attendant cold front. There remains some discrepancies within low track, as deterministic runs vary between both a slightly slower and more southeastward track versus one slightly quicker or further west. Of these, the NAM seems to be the outlier taking both the slowest and furthest west shift. That said, ensembles have settled on the generally slower solution (compared to those of runs in recent days) as well as the low tracking near the border of Arkansas and Tennessee then along the periphery of the state of Kentucky and into the Ohio Valley. With this the better agreed upon evolution, the next concern leans on how well we destabilize into late morning to afternoon Friday ahead of the advancing cold front. Soundings do depict some drier air making it in, where breaks in cloud cover will likely be best achieved across locations nearer to the VA/WV border. That said, most guidance suggests a few hundred J/kg of usable CAPE, with the NAM CIPS analogs highlighting an enhanced swath of 750-1000 J/kg in the Bluegrass and I-64 corridor. Consequently, this is co-located with better helicity as indicated by HREF probabilities. Given the strong shear and support aloft coupled with the forcing, an anomalous LLJ and increasing instability, damaging wind gusts, a few tornadoes, and some generally small hail can't be ruled out primarily within a QLCS set up. Additionally, there is a risk of flash flooding and/or rising basin levels. Showers and storms into this morning have dumped rainfall amounts varying from over 1.25" in the south/southwest to less than half an inch in the far north. With the progressive nature of the low and lifting/passing boundaries and FFG generally 1.5-2.5" for 3 hour amounts, concerns will generally remain isolated. That said, any strong to severe storms late morning to afternoon Friday could pose isolated risks within these heavy downpours and over locations already soaked from previous activity. Additionally, winds/gusts will be concerning. With flow increasing out of the south to veering southwest through the day, sustained winds of 20-30 mph are likely for many- particularly open and elevated locations. Similarly, wind gusts of up to 60 mph will be possible, again best at locations above the 2000 ft elevation threshold which can better tap into the wind field aloft. Ensemble probabilities project these higher end gusts to stay contained to the south/southeast and thus have hoisted a High Wind Watch mid morning Friday and through the evening. Where probabilities for exceeding these higher values and early morning convection could stabilize the airmass some early into Friday morning, have vowed to go with an advisory. Winds/gusts will likely peak Friday afternoon ahead and behind the cold front, before slackening into the overnight hours. CAMs suggest some post frontal showers, are possible as the core of the trough axis swings the rest of the way through. Outside of these potential showers towards periods end, activity will generally dwindle from west to east into the extended forecast. Upper level ridging follows the shortwave, gliding in for the weekend. .LONG TERM...(Friday night through Wednesday) Issued at 542 AM EST THU MAR 2 2023 Key messages: * Windy conditions through Friday evening, before a gradual diminishment occurs overnight. * Dry weather through Monday with temperatures still averaging above normal overall. * Scattered rain chances then return for the rest of the period with near seasonable temperatures by Wednesday. Amplified flow will be turning more zonal aloft for the majority of the CONUS through the weekend, as troughing stays more confined to the Pacific Northwest and the northern Great Basin. This troughing then gradually expands southeast with time into next week, although model agreement on the timing and amplitude regarding the evolution is poor. As such, have not deviated too much from the blended model guidance. We begin the period with the anomalously deep system exiting off towards the eastern Great Lakes by early Saturday. Windy conditions will continue through late Friday evening, before winds gradually diminish the second half of the night. Temperatures will eventually dip into the upper 30s and lower 40s. Clouds will stick around into Saturday morning, before gradually clearing out in the afternoon. Highs will retreat to the lower to middle 50s and have stayed a shade under the blended guidance, as clouds could be a bit more stubborn to clear, given the fairly steep inversion atop the moisture to overcome. Mostly clear skies will then be the rule from Saturday night through Monday, as modest ridging peaks across the Ohio and Tennessee valleys through early next week. Temperatures will be trending back above normal following the closer to seasonably normal values having occurred Saturday. Highs will be in the lower 60s for Sunday, and lower 70s on Monday, with lows in the 30s and 40s. A short wave trough and associated cold front will drop southeast across the Ohio Valley Monday night into early Tuesday, bringing our next chance of showers. This boundary will then stall across the Deep South, before an area of low pressure tracks out of the ArkLaTex region, bringing additional moisture and another resultant threat of showers to the area late Tuesday night into Wednesday, although confidence is low given the model disagreement. An extremely unusual and intense storm system will affect eastern Kentucky on Friday and Friday evening. A line of thunderstorms is expected to develop within the system's intense wind field. This line of storms has the potential to become severe with damaging to destructive wind gusts of 60 to 70 mph, isolated tornadoes, and hail. If winds of this magnitude are realized, power outages are likely. Outside of this line of thunderstorms, frequent and widespread gusts of 40 to 50 mph are expected from late Friday morning through Friday evening. There may be also be a few hour period of 50 to 60 mph gusts over the higher elevations of southeast Kentucky and also across the Cumberland River Basin from Knox and Whitley counties westward.
