this morning and shower coverage is diminishing. These should end
by around sunrise today. Temperatures in the inland valleys are
in the 20s in many areas this morning while the coast is still
seeing temps in the 30s. Highs are only expected to be in the
upper 40s to mid 50s this afternoon. Tonight temperatures aloft
start to warm, but winds will be lighter. This will likely keep
temperatures in most areas slightly warmer, especially the higher
elevations. Issued another freeze watch for Mendocino county, but
the Humboldt and Del Norte county coasts are less certain on how
cold they will get tonight. The cloud cover ahead of the next
system may limit the cooling and temperatures may only reach the
mid 30s.

Monday the next weather system starts to approach the area. Winds
will start to pick up quickly ahead of the front in the morning
on the north coast and spread south and east through the
afternoon. The high wind watch remains on track for portions of
Humboldt, Mendocino and Trinity counties Monday afternoon through
Monday night where gusts of 45 to 60 mph are expected on the
higher terrain and exposed coastal headlands.

Rain and snow are expected to follow quickly moving onshore by
midday and spreading south to Mendocino and Lake counties through
the afternoon. Models have trended slightly slower with the onset
of the precipitation. One to two inches of rain are expected with
the main frontal band as it moves onshore late Monday afternoon
through Tuesday morning. Snow levels are expected to be around
1500 to 2000 when the precip starts and some areas of Mendocinco
and Lake counties are expected to rise to 2500 feet. This is the
tricky part of the forecast. Snow levels could remain slightly
lower than the current forecast due to the heavy precip rates. If
snow levels stay at 1500 feet this could have significant travel
impacts on Highway 101. Del Norte, Humboldt and Trinity counties
are expected to see significant impacts with 1 to 2 feet of snow
above 2500 feet. It is still uncertain how much snow will fall at
elevations of 1500 to 2000 feet.

The more challenging part of the system is the area of low
pressure that will have become vertically stacked by this point.
It looks like it will be fairly cold aloft as well. Each model run
seems to have a different solution on how fast and where it will
track. In general the cold air will keep snow levels fairly low.
This is expected to bring additional rain, snow and wind to the
area however the exact track of the low will have a big impact on
where and when these will occur. Due to the amount of cold air
and some instability aloft have added thunderstorms to the
forecast for Tuesday evening, although like everything else this
is highly uncertain. Showers are expected to finally taper off
through the day Wednesday as the low finally drops south of the
area allowing high pressure to build in.

Thursday generally looks to be dry with only a few inland showers
possible. Friday the ensembles are starting to show a weak system
bringing some rain to the area, but some of the ensemble clusters
keep it dry as well. Saturday the models are in better agreement
on another round of rain moving into the area. MKK

.AVIATION...Sparse shower activity continues at KACV but should
cease soon after sunrise as cloud groups scatter at 2500 feet. Sky
cover will be few or clear until dense mid level clouds set in late
tonight as a deep low pressure system approaches the CWA. KCEC will
have higher ceilings also until mid level clouds fill in tonight
ahead of adverse weather from the approaching low pressure system.
Winds will be light and mostly northerly through the TAF period.
Bearings will turn southerly Monday morning and build in the
afternoon. Low level wind sheer will be an issue as storm force
winds set in Monday, according to model soundings. /EYS

.MARINE...Winds continue to ease, particularly in the northern
outer waters. Small craft advisory will expire by sunrise in the
northern waters as swell diminishes. Small craft advisory
continues for the southern waters but will expire late tonight as
northerly winds back off. Otherwise, strong southerly winds are
expected early next week as a strong low and associated front
approach the area. Expect gales by Monday afternoon with storm
force gusts across the outer waters N of Cape Mendocino. Have
upgraded to a Storm Warning for the N outer waters and Gale
Warnings for the remaining inner waters and southern outer waters.
Duration of the Gale has also been lengthened with new model data
suggesting greater exposure from the low pressure system stalling
a bit. Mariners should continue to monitor the latest forecasts
