What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this gale warning went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Eureka, CA wrote its last area forecast discussion before this gale warning went out at Mar 25, 2:50 PM PDT, 11 hours 58 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Mar 25, 2:50 PM PDT, 11 hours 58 minutes before
AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
National Weather Service Eureka CA
250 PM PDT Sat Mar 25 2023

.SYNOPSIS...Clearing skies late tonight will favor cold
temperatures across much of Northwestern California during Sunday
morning. Otherwise, dry weather on Sunday will be followed by a
strong storm system entering the region early next week. Heavy
mountain snow, gusty south winds, and low-elevation rainfall can
be expected Monday through Wednesday, with additional periods of
unsettled weather possible during the second half of the upcoming
week.

&&

.DISCUSSION...Cold air aloft (near -30C at 500 mb) and steep lapse
rates occurring downstream from a weak upper impulse were aiding
in light shower activity over mainly Trinity, Humboldt, and Del
Norte Counties this afternoon. The previously mentioned impulse is
forecast to exit east away from NRN CA late tonight, and that
will be accompanied by rapidly clearing skies and strong surface
radiational cooling. Temperatures are forecast to plummet as a
result, particularly across interior valleys, where lows will
locally be in the low 20s. Farther west at the coast, low
temperatures will be in the upper 20s to low 30s. Freeze and hard
freeze warnings are in effect for the very cold temperatures.

Weak midlevel shortwave ridging is then forecast to develop across
the region during the remainder of Sunday. Dry weather will be
probable as a result...though this will be short-lived as a strong
upper disturbance digs southward from WRN BC Sunday evening
through Monday. The disturbance is forecast to rapidly occlude
offshore from OR and NRN CA Monday afternoon and evening, with an
associated surface frontal boundary approaching coastal portions
of NWRN CA. South-southeast winds will quickly strengthen as the
surface pressure gradient tightens and a 50-70 kt coastal barrier
jet spreads east. A high wind watch has been issued for gusts to
60 mph occurring across portions of Humboldt, Trinity, and NRN
Mendocino Counties valid 5 PM Monday through 5 AM Tuesday.

A shield of stratiform precipitation is forecast to accompany the
approaching front during Monday evening. Periods of moderate to
locally heavy low-elevation rain will occur as a result, while
mountainous areas above 2000 feet MSL experience accumulating
snow. Peak snowfall intensity, with rates approaching 1 inch per
hour, is expected to occur late Monday night and early Tuesday
morning, with moderate rates occurring during the remainder of
Tuesday, followed by low rates Wednesday morning into the
afternoon. A winter storm watch remains in effect for heavy snow
valid Monday afternoon through early Wednesday morning, and that
watch appears to be on track for an upgrade to warning during the
next 24 hours.

The occluded cyclone is forecast to move south of the EKA CWA
Wednesday afternoon and evening. Post-cyclone shower activity is
expected to dissipate Wednesday night, which will likely be
accompanied by another morning of cold interior temperatures on
Thursday. Thereafter, an additional round of precipitation is
evident in model guidance during late week.

Garner

&&

.AVIATION...Scattered light showers have decreased in coverage
through the day. High resolution models indicate a slight
resurgence in shower activity along the North Coast this evening,
and have a period of VCSH for a few hours during that period.
Otherwise, skies are expected to gradually clear through the TAF
period with light winds. Patchy radiational fog is possible late
tonight. /SEC

&&

.MARINE...Northerly winds will slowly diminish through Sunday. A
large NW swell will gradually subside through the weekend. Have
left the existing Small Craft Advisories unchanged, with the N
waters advisory ending early Sunday morning and the S waters
ending around midnight Sunday night.

Strong southerly winds are expected early next week as a strong
low and associated front approach the area. Expect gales by Monday
afternoon with storm force gusts across the outer waters N of
Cape Mendocino. Have hoisted a Storm Watch for the N outer waters
and have tweaked the beginning and ending times of the existing
Gale Watch. In the Gale Watch areas, have indicated occasional
gusts to storm force. The strength of the winds will be highly
dependent on the depth of the low pressure system and its
proximity to the coast. In addition, the low may meander near the
coastal waters before filling, which may prolong the gusty winds.
Mariners should continue to monitor the latest forecasts regarding
this system. /SEC
