Key Messages:
- Strong to severe storms are possible tomorrow afternoon, initiating
over western MO and then quickly shifting to the east.
- Strong south to southwest winds from this evening through
tomorrow night. The strongest winds will likely be tomorrow
afternoon when gusts of 45 to 55 mph are expected.
- Critical fire weather conditions across eastern KS and western MO
Friday afternoon.
A strong upper-level storm system is moving across CA and NV this
afternoon. Strong lower tropospheric moisture advection is occurring
ahead of this wave, enhanced by a high pressure area over the
southeastern US, funneling moisture northward through the Plains.
Water vapor imagery shows a surge of upper- level moisture
advecting into the middle of country as well, leading to very deep
moisture through the atmosphere. This will lead to widespread
cloud cover tonight into the day tomorrow, ahead of the advancing
strong shortwave trough. The low-level jet will strengthen
overnight and as the area remains mixed, we'll likely see
sustained wind of 15-25 mph with occasional gusts of 45 mph.
There will also be isolated to scattered showers and possibly a
thunderstorm this evening and overnight due to strong moisture
transport into the area and broad isentropic ascent ahead of the
advancing shortwave. The 295K and 300K surface show this well.
Focus then shifts to tomorrow with a multitude of hazards. First,
potential still exists for strong to severe thunderstorms during the
afternoon hours. Storms should initiate in the 18-20Z time frame in
western MO along/ ahead of the front and upper shortwave trough.
These storms then quickly move to the east later in the afternoon.
Storms should exit the eastern portions of the forecast area by 23-
00Z as the upper shortwave surges eastward, quickly pushing the
front east with it. Storms that do develop in our forecast area will
have to potential for large hail due to modestly steep mid-level
lapse rates. But given the very strong winds aloft, steep low-level
lapse rates, and initially, stronger downdraft CAPE, damaging winds
will be likely. There will also be a tornado risk as there is some
cyclonic curvature in the low-level hodograph but the better risk
for tornadoes will be to our east.
Behind the front that will help initiate storms, a much drier air
mass will move into the area. This will be combined with very strong
winds as the mixing depth reaches close to 10,000 feet. With
winds within and at the top of this mixed layer near or exceeding
50 kts, very strong wind gusts are likely at the surface. We will
likely see wind gusts in the 45 to 55 mph range across eastern KS
and western MO as a result. Contemplated issuing a high wind
warning given the aforementioned parameters. But feel more
confident in high-end wind advisory levels.
The dry air and strong winds will result in critical fire weather
conditions across eastern KS and western MO. Afternoon humidity
values will fall into the 25 to 30 percent range and may even fall
lower if moisture really drops behind the front, which is still
possible. Also, have issued the Red Flag Warning for areas that have
the best combination of winds and low humidity currently. An
expansion to the north and east is possible if models continue to
indicate very low humidity values shifting northeastward. Winds will
already be present throughout the forecast area.

winds. Expect gusts up to 40 knots to be possible through the
overnight. Winds could gust even stronger after sunrise Friday.

high enough to nail down the exact window.
