KEY MESSAGES:
1) Scattered snow showers expected across southeast Wyoming and
the Nebraska panhandle Wednesday and Thursday. Chance for isolated
snow squalls/moderate to heavy banded snow across portions of
east central Wyoming and the Nebraska panhandle.
2) High Wind Watch remains in effect from Thursday morning through
Friday afternoon for wind-prone areas of southeast Wyoming where
wind gusts 65 to 70 mph may be experienced. Watches may be
expanded to include Cheyenne in future forecast issuances.
3) Very cold temperatures and wind chills. Wind chills will
struggle to get out of single digits to low teens today and
tomorrow.
DISCUSSION: The main impacts in the upcoming two days will be from
snow showers, high winds, and well-below normal temperatures.
Scattered snow showers will continue over the next two days with
the best chances for any accumulation being today. The current
forecast has most of southeast Wyoming and the Nebraska panhandle
receiving anywhere from a Trace to 1 inch. However, particularly
near Douglas, Lusk, and Chadron, there is a chance for heavier
bands of snow to develop that could result in 2 to 4 inches of
accumulation. With gusty winds today as well, blowing snow would
be a concern for anyone traveling or recreating outdoors. Guidance
is also showing the possibility of snow squalls developing as
there is some instability due to the steep lapse rates and energy
from the weak shortwave pushing across east central Wyoming and
the Nebraska panhandle.
Winds pick up Thursday as the pressure gradient tightens against
the Laramie Range, warranting High Wind Watches for the wind-prone
areas of southeast Wyoming: Arlington to Elk Mountain, Bordeaux,
and the South Laramie Range and Foothills. Opted to keep the same
timing of the High Wind Watches for now, but an extension into
Friday may be needed for Bordeaux and the South Laramie Range and
Foothills. CAG to CPR 850 mb pressure gradients increase to 70 to
77 meters Thursday morning, decreasing to near 55 meters Thursday
night, which is still elevated. The GFS shows a strong area of
subsidence along the Snowy Range and the Laramie Range,
contributing to the high wind potential. There is the potential
for the high winds to also creep into Cheyenne, but that will
heavily depend upon the subsidence moving eastward and/or mountain
waves developing off the Laramie Range and breaking over
Cheyenne. Due to these factors, westerly wind gusts 65 to 70 mph
are possible through Thursday night in the High Wind Watch area.
Outside of the High Wind Watch area, it will still be quite gusty,
with wind gusts 45 to 55 mph possible.
Temperatures today and tomorrow will be well-below-normal with
high temperatures struggling to reach above freezing today as a
weak frontal passage pushes through along with the snow showers.
Tomorrow will be a few degrees warmer as the stronger westerly,
downsloping winds develop. However, due to the temperatures still
being well-below-normal and strong, gusty winds, the wind chills
will remain in single digits to low teens.
.LONG TERM...(Friday through Tuesday)

Main concerns through the long term period will be the continuation
of strong winds Friday and Friday night ahead of a strong cold
frontal passage early Saturday morning. The post-frontal environment
will bring a chilly start to next week while multiple rounds of
snowfall will move over the region Saturday through Monday.
Pressure gradients across the Laramie Range look to ease up during
the day Friday, while strong flow aloft remains. 700mb flow of 40-45
kt throughout the day near Arlington will continue the threat of
high winds, though local guidance continues to show a potential lull
Friday morning to midday with lower probabilities. However, a quick
passing shortwave with lee side troughing will tighten these
gradients back up headed into Friday night with a strong mountain
wave signature in the omega fields. Impressive GJT-CYS mslp
gradients peaking around 15 mb would also suggest the potential for
high winds spreading farther east into Central Laramie Co including
Cheyenne. Will need to continue to monitor forecast trends as there
may be the need for additional high wind headlines for Friday night
along the South Laramie Range, though strong 700mb flow for the area
in the GFS is on the higher side of the latest GEFS distribution.
High wind potential will end fairly quickly with the cold frontal
passage early Saturday morning. Coldest drops in temperature will be
across northern portions of the CWA with 700mb temps reaching 15 to
20 degrees C below zero. This would result in high temperatures
Sunday and Monday struggling to climb out of the single digits.
NBM's probability of high temperature remaining below 0F degrees on
Monday even shows quiet a few areas along and east of the Laramie
Range in the 20-30% range providing additional support for the cold
stretch ahead, however daily records are not expected to be exceeded
at this time.
In addition to the cold, post-frontal upslope flow along with
another approaching shortwave from the west, will increase snowfall
chances across the area Saturday that will continue on and off
through Monday night with subsequent vort maxes. Heaviest snowfall
will be likely in the Sierra Madres with favorable moist orographic
lift continuing though much of this period. Will need to monitor how
this pattern evolves as winter weather headlines may be necessary
for mountains zones and potentially portions of Carbon and Albany
counties, while snowfall amounts should be lighter along and east of
the I-25 corridor.

The primary forecast challenge in the aviation forecast today will
be with regard to cloud ceilings and potential afternoon snow
squalls. While CIG heights east in the Nebraska Panhandle may
scatter, the expectation is for the lowest cloud level to remain
in the 2-4kft range. Thus, brief thickening of any cloud layers
may result in MVFR CIGs today in western NE Panhandle terminals.
Conditions will support snow showers later this afternoon, however
areal coverage of snow will be very low. While most snow showers
(and heavier squalls) will likely remain away from terminals,
there is around a 10-20% chance of a heavier squall at BFF, CDR,
and AIA which could very briefly reduce VIS to MVFR/IFR. Chance of
squalls will end this evening with partly cloudy skies overnight.
