.SYNOPSIS...
An arctic front will plow across the Lower Great Lakes this evening
with a brief burst of heavy snow and blowing snow, followed by
relatively light lake effect snow southeast of Lake Ontario and Lake
Erie later tonight through Friday night, along with bitterly cold
wind chills. Lake effect snow will end Saturday morning, with much
warmer temperatures quickly arriving by Sunday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Dry weather will prevail areawide through most of today. A 50 knot
low level jet will move across the Lower Great Lakes today with
steepening lapse rates supporting downward mixing of higher momentum
from aloft late morning through the afternoon. Expect gusts to reach
35-40 knots in the typical areas northeast of Lake Erie from Buffalo
to the west side of Rochester, and across Jefferson County, peaking
this afternoon. There is some potential for winds to reach advisory
criteria in this area, but weak warm advection ahead of the
approaching arctic front may help to limit mixing enough to keep
gusts just below advisory criteria.
An arctic cold front will blast through the region from northwest to
southeast this evening, entering areas along the US/Canadian border
early in the evening and then progressing southeast to the Southern
Tier by late evening. High-res CAMS guidance continues to show
strong support for a quick burst of heavy snow along the arctic
front, especially east and southeast of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario
with an added boost of lake moisture. Some lake effect snow may
start to develop just ahead of the arctic front northeast of the
lakes, but the window for this is very brief before the arrival of
the front. The arctic front will produce a quick 1-3" of snow this
evening, with the greater amounts across the higher terrain east of
Lake Erie and Lake Ontario from lake enhancement and slightly longer
residence time. Expect blowing snow with the arctic front passage as
well.
Its interesting in that you can infer the large and impressive
temperature gradient behind the arctic front by looking at sat
imagery. As of 930 this morning, noter the IMMEDIATE lake response
on Lake Superior in the wake of the approaching arctic front.
Multiple streamers developed as soon as the front swept through...
and the same can be expected over the Lower Great Lakes once the
front charges through early tonight.
Boundary layer flow will quickly veer to the northwest behind the
arctic front and temperatures will begin to plummet. The cold
airmass is very dry above 5K feet behind the arctic front, with dry
air and short northwest fetch limiting the intensity of lake effect
snow. Expect a spray of fairly widespread multiple bands to develop
across much of the area southeast of Lake Ontario and Lake Erie
overnight, with minor additional accumulations. There will likely be
an upstream connection to Lake Huron (western Southern Tier) and
Georgian Bay (between Rochester and Buffalo) which may locally
enhance snowfall at times.
Wind chills will quickly drop to well below zero by late tonight as
arctic air pours into the region. More on the wind chills below in
the short term section.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
...Quick Shot of Bitterly Cold Air to End the Work Week...
Our area will be in the grips of the coldest air so far this season
as we open the period Friday morning. A deep trough will be centered
over the eastern half of North America. The notorious polar vortex
will be displaced to the south in the process, being found in the
vicinity of Hudson Bay and Quebec for the bulk of this period. That
means that the coldest air in the northern hemisphere will be just
to our north (H85 -42C to -44C). Add in some gusty winds as well
just to make sure we really feel the 'bite' of this frigid airmass.
The details...
H85 temps will drop to between -25C to -28C over the bulk of the
region (sub -30C east of Lake Ontario) during the course of Friday,
with near surface temps holding near steady within a few degrees of
their overnight lows. This will translate into daytime highs that
will range from single digits below zero across the North Country,
to the single digits to very low teens across the lake plains and
across the Genesee valley/Finger Lakes region. A northwest wind
gusting to 25-35 mph at times will combine with these frigid temps
to generate dangerously low wind chills that will average 15 to 20
below across the western counties and 20 to 30 below east of Lake
Ontario, with Tug Hill and the western Dacks approaching -40C.
Meanwhile, a cyclonic flow of arctic air crossing the generally open
waters of Lake Erie/Ontario will continue to support broad multi-
banded lake snows south/southeast of Lakes with a couple inches
possible in the most persistent snows. Given the bitter cold, this
will be a greasy snowfall featuring plates rather than fluffy
dendrites.
Friday night will then guarantee to be the coldest period in recent
memory, as all areas away from the immediate lake shores drop to
near zero or below, meanwhile sites east of Lake Ontario will likely
experience mins approaching 20 below. While the axis of an arctic
high will drift across the region during the second half of the
night, there will be enough of a gradient to easily generate wind
chill values ranging from the minus teens and lower 20s across the
western counties, and sub -30C across the North Country with
apparent temp values possibly falling as low as -40 in the vicinity
of the Tug Hill/western Dacks.
Wind Chill Warning continues from 06Z Fri through 18Z on Saturday
east of Lake Ontario. With high confidence for wind chill values of
15 below or less across the remainder of our forecast area, a Wind
Chill Advisory has been issued from late Thursday night through late
Saturday morning for these areas as well.
While the bitter cold will be slow to loosen its grip on our
forecast area Saturday morning, the core of the coldest air aloft
will have already exited across Quebec and the Labrador Sea. As the
aforementioned surface high moves across New England Saturday
afternoon though, the door will be open for warm advection to
increase over our forecast area. This will bring a screeching halt
to any leftover light lake snows and quickly transition to the
chance for a few light warm advection snow showers across the
northern half of our forecast area, however the better mid and upper
level support will remain north into Canada. The strong warm
advection alluded to above will also allow temps over the western
counties to modify into the upper teens and lower/mid 20s by the end
of the day. Sites east of Lake Ontario will make it into the teens,
however readings over Tug Hill and the western Dacks will struggle
to climb out of the single digits.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
A series of troughs/ridges will move across the country during the
long term period as the progressive pattern continues. With most of
these airmasses being Pacific based, there will be a lack of any
real cold air, hence our temperatures will be above average overall.
Expect intermittent rounds of showers and gusty winds as systems
move through the region. The details...
Surface high pressure will slide off the Mid Atlantic coast Saturday
night. A stout low level southwesterly flow will develop between
this high and an area of low pressure moving into the upper Great
Lakes. This will allow strong warm advection to ensue with
temperatures continuing to rise right through Saturday night and
Sunday, with temps shooting back up above normal for the second half
of the weekend. Quite the turnaround. As for precipitation, the next
upper level trough and associated surface low pressure system will
move from the upper Great Lakes Saturday night to southern Quebec by
later Sunday. Expect mainly dry weather Saturday night into the
first part of Sunday, before the chance of some rain and snow
showers moves back in across the area during the second half of
Sunday out ahead of a cold front trailing the aforementioned surface
low. A 50 knot low level jet will also cross the area during this
timeframe. The main jet axis will remain in the warm advection,
which will hinder full mixing the stronger winds just off the deck.
That said, it will still be quite windy with winds gusting 30-40
mph.
The aforementioned trough axis will move east into New England
Monday with weak cold advection in its' wake. High pressure surface
and aloft will build in from the west, dissipating any lingering
showers Monday morning with mainly dry weather expected to start the
new work week. Tranquil weather is expected to last through Monday
night as the upper level ridge axis crosses over the area. As
mentioned, some chillier air will filter across the region causing
temperatures to drop off a bit, with highs Monday within a couple
degrees of average.
Ridging pushes east of the area Tuesday as the next in the series of
mid level troughs approaches from the west. The trough axis will
cross the area late Tuesday and Tuesday night, with a surface
reflection in the form of a weak cool front crossing the area as
well. This will bring the next chance for mostly rain showers, with
any frozen type precip likely confined to the higher terrain east of
Lake Ontario. Model consensus then diverges heading into the mid
week timeframe, however above normal temperatures are expected to
continue.

.AVIATION /15Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Lake effect clouds will scatter out later this morning, leaving a
period of mainly VFR conditions from late morning through late
afternoon. It will turn very windy today, with gusts of 35-40 knots
likely from late morning through the afternoon over and northeast of
Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.
An arctic front will blast through the eastern Great Lakes this
evening, producing one or several quick bursts of snow and gusty
winds with brief LIFR conditions. Northwest flow of very cold air
behind the arctic front will allow widespread, but relatively light
lake effect snow to develop tonight southeast of Lake Ontario and
Lake Erie, impacting much of the region. Cold temperatures and
resulting small snowflakes are typically very efficient at reducing
VSBY, so expect areas of IFR overnight even in light snow.

Friday...Blustery with MVFR/IFR in lake effect snow showers
southeast of the lakes.
Saturday...Mainly VFR.
Sunday...MVFR/VFR with rain and snow showers late.

A tightening pressure gradient and low level jet will cross the
region today, bringing increasingly strong southwest winds just
ahead of an approaching arctic front. This will bring a brief period
of low end gales to Lake Ontario later this afternoon through early
evening. Sustained winds will reach at least 30 knots on Lake Erie
along with gale force gusts.
An arctic front will cross the lower Great Lakes this evening, with
winds quickly veering to the northwest and diminishing overnight.
Moderate northwesterlies will continue to bring Small Craft Advisory
conditions to Lake Erie through Friday morning, and Lake Ontario
through late Friday night.
