.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure will cross the Great Lakes bringing rain showers and
mild temperatures until a strong cold front crosses the area this
afternoon and early this evening. In the wake of the cold front a
blustery and sharply colder weekend will follow...along with the
likelihood for accumulating lake effect snow east of Lakes Erie and
Ontario.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of late morning surface low pressure was located just east of the
Michigan Straits...with its trailing cold front extending southward
across Lake Huron to far western Lake Erie. The steady warm air
advection regime and 50+ knot low level jet out ahead of the front
continue to generate widespread showers across the majority of our
area as of this writing...and expect these to more or less continue
through the passage of the cold front...which still looks to take
place between mid-late this afternoon and early this evening.
Rainfall amounts through the day look to be generally in the
0.33 to 0.75 inch range.

A tightening gradient and deep layer of strong winds will also lead
to gusty conditions through the day today. Profiles indicating
strengthening southwesterly winds to 35 to 45 mph, perhaps even a
bit higher with the strongest winds focused northeast of Lake Erie
from Buffalo to Rochester. Peak wind gusts likely around the 3 pm to
7 pm time frame. It will be a mild day despite the rain showers and
winds, with high temperatures well into the 40s to the mid 50s.

Cold front crosses the region late this afternoon/early evening. The
frontal passage will bring an abrupt end to the steadier rain. Much
colder air pours into the region behind the front tonight with any
leftover rain showers mixing with and changing to snow by late
evening/early overnight. Colder air then deepens with some lake
effect snow showers developing east/northeast of the lakes toward
Saturday morning with some light accumulations possible.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
...Lake Effect Snow Headlines East of Both Lakes Saturday
Afternoon into Sunday...

An anomalously deep trough will move across the eastern Great
Lakes region for the weekend. Cold air advection will be ongoing
across the region Saturday morning. Temperatures at 850mb will
be around - 10C, and lake effect processes will be taking place.
Disorganized lake effect snow showers will be ongoing south of
Buffalo and across the northern Tug Hill region. A surface
trough will approach the Lakes Saturday morning and snow showers
will become more organized east of Lake Erie as southwest winds
align with the long fetch of the Lake. The opposite will occur
east of Lake Ontario with snow showers diminishing across the
northern Tug Hill through the morning. The surface trough will
also bring an uptick in synoptic moisture and surface
convergence. This will expand snow showers across the entire
region where most locations will see a brief window of snow.
Behind the trough, colder air will move into the region and
gusty winds. Southwest winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts 30- 40 mph
can be expected by Saturday afternoon. The higher gusts will be
across the Niagara Frontier. Cold Saturday with highs in the low
to mid 30s, upper 20s across the higher terrain. The winds will
make it feel even colder with wind chills in the teens.

Increasing synoptic moisture will occur across the eastern Great
Lakes with equilibrium levels of 10-15k resulting in organized lake
effect bands east of both Lakes Saturday evening through Sunday.
East of Lake Erie... Initially, a band will organize from the
Lake Erie shoreline to just south of the City of Buffalo before
winds veer slightly and push the band from the Lake Erie
shoreline to the Southtowns and Wyoming county. The band will
then move further south into the western Southern Tier by Sunday
morning and with the loss of fetch, snow showers will become
weaker through Sunday morning. East of Lake Ontario... a more
intense lake effect band is likely as winds become aligned with
the long fetch of the lake. An upstream lake connection will
also increase snow production across the Tug Hill region.
Similarly to Lake Erie, winds will veer from the south-
southwest to the northwest Saturday night through Sunday. This
will cause the band to move south over that time period. For
both Lakes...snowfall rates will be greatest overnight and
likely reach 1- 2"/hour at times. Once the sun comes up Sunday,
the bands will become more cellular or disorganized. Localized
snowfall accumulations of greater than 7 inches are possible at
this time. Winds will remain gusty Saturday night with gusts
30-40kts and blowing snow is expected within the bands. A Winter
Storm Watch remains in effect for Chautauqua, Cattaraugus,
southern Erie and Wyoming counties east of Lake Erie and
Jefferson, and Lewis counties east of Lake Ontario from 2pm
Saturday to 2pm Sunday. Low temperatures will fall to the upper
teens to low 20s Saturday night with wind chills in the single
digits.

Disorganized lake effect snow showers may continue into Sunday
afternoon, however accumulation will greatly come down due to the
time of day. Gusty winds will continue Sunday with gusts up to
25mph. Winds will diminish from west to east through Sunday
afternoon. High temperatures will range from the upper 20s to low
30s with wind chills in the single digits to low teens.

Surface high pressure will build into the Ohio Valley Sunday night.
Warm air advection will take place across the region, however a
shortwave trough on the backside of the longwave trough will
approach the region. This feature and an uptick in synoptic
moisture while temperatures at 850mb remain cold enough for
lake effect processes east of Lake Ontario, may result in snow
showers redeveloping across the Tug Hill region. An additional
few inches can't be ruled out. Low temperatures will fall to the
low to mid 20s.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
A flat mid-level ridge will build from the Great Lakes to the
Northeast Monday through Tuesday, with expansive surface high
pressure stretching from the Gulf of Mexico to New England. On
Monday, 850H temps initially around -8C across Lake Ontario may be
enough to continue snow showers through the morning. Conditions will
quickly become unfavorable for snow showers as subsidence and dry
air increase across the region. Dry weather then expected areawide
through at least Monday night.

Uncertainty in the evolution of the synoptic pattern grows moving
into Tuesday as there is a notable lack of consistency among the
guidance packages. A weak cold front is progged to drop southeast
through the region as a shortwave trough pivots from Ontario to
Quebec provinces, with a thin ribbon of moisture producing a few
light rain or snow showers. Given the high uncertainty, have added
some broad-brushed sChc PoPs (15-20) east of Lake Ontario Tuesday
through Tuesday night.

Moving into Wednesday night, mid-level ridging will shift eastward
as a large trough moves from the central Plains to the Great Lakes.
This will serve to lift a warm front across the Ohio Valley, with a
LLJ advecting deep moisture and overspreading showers across the
region through Thursday. Precip type at this range looks to be more
of the frozen variety or a wintry mix to start, then changing to all
rain on Thursday.

Otherwise, as surface high moves east of the region through midweek,
a light southerly return flow will initiate a warming trend.
Temperatures Monday and Monday night will average near normal, then
climbing to above normal for Tuesday and the rest of the week.

.AVIATION /15Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of late morning fairly widespread showers are found across much
of the area well out ahead of an approaching cold front. Flight
conditions generally range from MVFR to lower-end VFR...with some
embedded IFR ceilings found across the higher terrain of the western
Southern Tier.

The showers are expected to more or less continue until the cold
front crosses the area between mid-late this afternoon and early
this evening...while flight conditions generally continue to lower
into the IFR-MVFR ranges, mainly due to ceilings. Following the
frontal passage...southwest winds could also gust to 35-40 kts from
20-24z at IAG and BUF.

Following the passage of the cold front...mainly dry conditions and
general MVFR ceilings are then expected for a good portion of the
night...with just some spotty leftover rain and snow showers east of
the lakes changing over to all snow as much colder air overspreads
our region. East of Lake Erie...more numerous lake effect snow
showers may develop towards morning south of KBUF.

Outlook...

Saturday...Areas of MVFR with scattered snow showers.
Lake effect snow possible east/northeast of both Lakes Erie and
Ontario with localized IFR.

Sunday...Areas of MVFR/IFR in lake effect snow showers east and
southeast of the lakes.

Monday through Tuesday...Mainly VFR.

Saturday into Saturday night on both Lake Erie and Lake Ontario
