.SYNOPSIS...Increasing winds with some snow on the West Coast
today and tonight. Locally up to 2 inches of snow expected. Snow
spreading inland Wednesday. Increasing winds on the Arctic Coast
with blowing snow reducing visibility late this afternoon through
Wednesday. Near blizzard conditions east of Deadhorse Wednesday.
Remains mostly quiet in the Central and Eastern Interior, the
exception is the Delta Junction area where the Tanana Valley Jet
is bringing east winds gusting near 50 mph to the area.
Temperatures will remain near or above climatological normals.

.DISCUSSION...
Models...10/00Z and 10/06Z solutions are in reasonably good
agreement through the short term. A lot of moving parts so the
details are a bit confused. The NAM and ECMWF are handling the
stronger winds better than the GFS today so will be leaning fairly
heavily on those solutions. Precipitation is being handled fairly
well, but as usual the probabilities are low, so will lean on an
equal blend, but will increase the probabilities to likely or
better in areas with accumulating snow. Will only tweak the
temperature database as there are no significant changes expected
in the short term.
Aloft...At 500 hpa...Troughing high in the Canadian Archipelago
extends southwest to a 507 dam low over Banks Island, then west
and southwest to a 514 dam low over the Seward Peninsula, and
south to a 510 dam low over Bristol Bay and a 505 dam low 600 nm
south of Cold Bay. Ridging over the Dateline extends north into
the high Arctic, and south over the Central Bering Sea, while
ridging associated with a 536 dam high over the Southeast Yukon is
pushing west to the Middle Yukon Valley, and northwest to the
Central Brooks Range. This afternoon the troughing over the
Eastern Arctic Coast will be pushed offshore and the low over the
Seward Peninsula will move over St Lawrence Island as the ridging
over the state pushes west and northwest. A 516 dam low will move
over southern Kodiak Island with a shortwave extending east to
Sitka. Wednesday morning the troughing over the Arctic will be
over the offshore waters extending southwest to the Chukotsk
Peninsula, then south to a 508 dam low over St Matthew Island. The
low over Kodiak Island will move over the Kenai Peninsula at 521
dam with the shortwave extending east over the Copper River Basin.
Ridging pushing out of Canada will push northwest over the
Eastern Arctic Coast to a 528 dam high 150 nm north of Wrangel
Island. Wednesday afternoon troughing will hold over the southern
Arctic with a 523 dam low 50 nm north of Utqiagvik, while the low
over St Lawrence Island will slide 50 nm to the southwest. The
shortwave over the state will lie over Norton Sound to the AlCan
Border Crossing. At 850 hpa...-10C isotherm lies from Eagle to
Gambell while temperatures around -20C are over the Arctic Coast
today. The -10C isotherm will move north over the Seward Peninsula
extending east over Eagle, while temperatures over the Arctic
Coast will warm slightly. By Wednesday afternoon the -10C isotherm
will lie from Point Hope to the AlCan Border Crossing with
temperatures around -20 hanging on over the Eastern Brooks Range.
Surface...High pressure across the Arctic with a 1035 mb high 500
nm northwest of Utqiagvik moving southeast. Low pressure across
the mainland as a 981 mb low has moved north into Bristol Bay this
morning. The pressure gradient across the state will tighten today
and tonight as the high moves southeast, and the low moves north
to Cape Newenham this afternoon, the lower Yukon Delta by
Wednesday morning at 992 mb, and northwest to St Lawrence Island
by Wednesday afternoon at 996 mb. The high will move to 400 nm
north of Utqiagvik Wednesday morning through the afternoon before
moving back to the west. A 1013 mb low will develop in the
Eastern Arctic Plain today and persist through Friday.
Arctic Coast and Brooks Range...Cloudy, flurries or light snow at
times, gusty winds developing as winds increase through most of
the day. Inland locations will see mix of clouds with some
flurries. No significant snowfall is expected, but visibility
will be reduced at times to one half mile or less in blowing
snow. Winds along the coast from Utqiagvik east are northeast to
east 10 to 20 mph, and will increase to 20 to 30 mph tonight and
25 to 35 mph Wednesday. Winds will be gusting near 40 mph. Winter
Storm Watch has been issued for the Kaktovik area east of
Deadhorse along the coast. Winds west of Utqiagvik northeast to
east 10 to 25 mph and will increase to 25 to 35 mph tonight.
Inland winds variable, mainly northeast to 10 mph. High
temperatures today and Wednesday in the single digits above to the
teens below, coldest in the plains. Low temperatures tonight will
range from around zero to around 25 below.
West Coast and Western Interior...A mix of clouds. Snow southwest
of Kotzebue and west of Kaltag. Heaviest accumulations will be in
the Lower Yukon Delta and on the southern Seward Peninsula with 1
to 3 inches. Some flurries or a chance of light snow with little
accumulation in the remainder of the area. Winds inland variable
to 10 mph, with mainly northwest to north winds 10 to 25 mph on
the capes and St Lawrence Island. High temperatures today and
Wednesday will range from around 10 below to the lower teens
above. Low temperatures tonight will range from around zero to
around 20 above.
Central and Eastern Interior...A mix of clouds with some flurries
tonight and Wednesday. No significant accumulation. Winds
variable to 10 mph in most locations, the exception will be east
winds gusting around 40 mph at Delta Junction. High temperatures
today and Wednesday will range from single digits below to the
teens above. Warmest in the Alaska Range, while temperatures
around Fairbanks will be in the single digits above. Low
temperatures tonight will range from the teens below to around 10
above with temperatures around Fairbanks in the single digits
below.
Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.
Extended forecast for days 4 to 7...Weather pattern will remain
quiet. Expect a mix of clouds with flurries or some light
accumulating snow, mainly in the coastal areas. Gusty winds on
the West Coast and Arctic Coast. Tanana Valley Jet wind this
weekend for Delta Junction. Temperatures near or just above
climatological normals.
