.SYNOPSIS...Above normal temperatures and breezy afternoons can be
expected into Saturday. By Sunday, a dry low-pressure system moving
into the western states will bring widespread strong winds to the
region, and will result in cooler temperatures for the first part of
next week.
&&

.UPDATE...8 pm surface observations show area of stronger gusts
around 35 mph localized to the western Mojave Desert. Elsewhere,
gusts have started to subside with several sites across southern
Nevada and northwest Arizona reporting gusts up to 25 mph.

Breezy/windy conditions will persist through the Mother's Day
Weekend. Model simulations consistent through Saturday showing
series of fast moving impulses passing by to our north. Model
depictions still agree on the evolution of an unseasonably deep
trough across the Great Basin next week. However, there remains some
run-to-run timing differences when exactly the trough axis clears
southern Nevada. As trough sharpens, most impactful day from the
wind still looks like Sunday. Widespread critical fire weather
conditions expected along with our typical impacts from blowing
dust/sand and dangerous crosswinds for high-profile vehicles along
Highway 395 in Inyo County. No update needed at this time.

.SHORT TERM...Today through Friday.

Breezy afternoons will continue over the next few days as a series
of shortwaves pass north of the region.  South-southwest winds will
increase this afternoon with the strongest winds expected over
western San Bernardino County and through the Owens Valley where a
few gusts to 40 mph are possible in favored locations.  Winds will
decrease overnight into Friday morning only to increase once again
Friday afternoon as a second shortwave passes north of the area.
This system looks to move a bit further south than the first one
resulting in slightly higher wind speeds.  Once again the highest
winds look to be in western San Bernardino County and the Owens
valley, except a few gusts to 45mph will be possible.

Temperatures will be the other main concern in the short term as
readings climb to above normal levels.  Friday still looks to be the
warmest day with highs ranging from the mid-90s in the Las Vegas
metro area to near 100 at Lake Havasu and Laughlin to near 105 in
Death Valley.  These temperatures will lead to moderate Heat Risk,
which means there is a moderate risk of heat-related illnesses for
those who are sensitive to heat, especially those without effective
cooling and/or adequate hydration.  The good news is that this warm
period will be short-lived as a significant cooling trend is on tap
for early next week.

.LONG TERM...Saturday through the middle of next week.

A deep trough will settle over the Western States over the weekend
with a trend towards increasingly windy conditions across the Mojave
Desert. Gusty conditions on Saturday will be strongest across the
Western Mojave Desert and lee of the Sierra, though it'll be
blustery in the afternoon most everywhere. Stronger winds kick in on
Sunday as troughing in the PacNW sinks southward and a tight
pressure gradient sets up across the Great Basin. Widespread wind
headlines are likely for Sunday, with the possibility of high wind
conditions in some locations. Given that it's Mothers Day weekend
and many people may have outdoor plans, keep an eye on the forecast
as the wind speeds could have significant implications on outdoor
activities. In addition to the strong winds, widespread blowing dust
is likely as well.

Significantly cooler air will invade the region Monday and linger
into the middle of next week as a series of weak shortwaves reload
the trough as it settles across near California and the Great Basin.
Breezy conditions can be expected as well each day, along with
slight chances for shower activity across the Southern Great Basin
and Sierra. Elsewhere dry conditions are likely to continue.

.FIRE WEATHER...Elevated fire concerns exist areawide each afternoon
today through Saturday with gusts 25-35 mph, above normal
temperatures and minimum relative humidities in the single digits.
Critical conditions are anticipated across Mohave County on Saturday
and areawide by Sunday with widespread gusty southwest winds in
excess of 40 mph with very dry fuels and single-digit relative
humidities. Given expected adverse conditions over the next several
days, a Fire Weather Watch has been issued for Mohave County, AZ on
Saturday, and area wide on Sunday. &&

.AVIATION...For Harry Reid...Gusty southwest winds will increase
this afternoon with the highest gusts around 25kts expected between
21-02Z.   The winds should decrease some after sunset, but
conditions will remain breezy into the overnight period.  Towards
morning the gradient should relax enough to allow winds to drop
below 10kts.  There is good agreement in the models that winds will
turn to the northwest and 10kts or less for a period tomorrow
morning, but gusty southwest winds will return Friday afternoon and
evening at levels similar to what is expected this afternoon.  High
clouds will move across the terminal this afternoon into tonight,
but no operational impacts are expected.

For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...Afternoon breezes are forecast at most sites over the
next two days.  KDAG will see the strongest winds with gusty
westerly winds developing late this afternoon and persisting into
Friday afternoon.  At KBIH, westerly downslope winds are expected
this afternoon before turning back to the north during the evening.
Similar westerly winds are possible again on Saturday.  For the
Colorado River Valley sites, a few southerly gusts to 20kts are
possible this afternoon at KIFP.  Otherwise, south to southwest
winds at 12kts or less are expected into Friday morning at KIFP and
KEED.
