.SYNOPSIS...An upper level trough approaching the Pacific Coast
will tap into a plume of moisture Friday. This will bring strong
winds and the potential for microbursts Friday afternoon and
evening. Moisture will deepen Saturday, with thunderstorms and a
potential for heavy rain across areas near and east of I-15 Saturday
afternoon and evening, continuing into Sunday morning.

.SHORT TERM (THROUGH 12Z SUNDAY)...The shortwave ridge over Utah
yesterday evening has started to shift east as a broad upper low
continues to approach the PacNW. Utah is transitioning to a
southerly flow aloft this morning, and this flow will increase
through the day, with some gusty winds developing by midafternoon
across the western valleys. Meanwhile, a much warmer airmass will
spread into the area, with H7 temperatures generally in the 16-18C
range. Afternoon maxes will be well above climatological normals as
a result.

A plume of moisture will rapidly spread north through Arizona and
New Mexico today, reaching Utah by late tonight, with PWATs in the
0.6-0.75 range across most of the area by 12z tomorrow. A few high-
based showers will be possible even tonight, as a weak vort lobe
lifts across western Utah.

The upstream low will come onshore tomorrow, and winds will increase
markedly as a surface low rapidly deepens across northwest Utah and
northeast NV, while H7 winds are progged to reach 40-50kt. A High
Wind Watch remains in place for western Utah, as widespread gusts to
at least 50 mph will be likely, with a potential for some sites
reaching 60 mph or greater.

A dry slot is expected to punch into western Utah tomorrow
afternoon, with PWATs falling to around 0.3 inches. The best
moisture will thus be confined to the eastern half of the forecast
area as a result. As such, showers should be focused over the spine
of Utah and the eastern valleys. Most of the showers are expected to
be high-based and produce little in the way of rainfall. Even weak
showers will have a microburst potential, especially given the
strong winds aloft. The best potential for thunderstorms will be
across the northeastern quadrant of the forecast area, this being
where the HREF and SREF shows the greatest instability.

By Saturday, moisture should continue to increase, with deeper
moisture expected to allow for a better chance of measurable
precipitation and localized heavy rain. Winds will remain strong
across western Utah on Saturday as the storm system remains
upstream, and wind highlights could very well be necessary.

.LONG TERM (After 06Z/12AM Sunday)...There remains high confidence
for the beginning half of the extended forecast to be rather active
as a highly amplified trough feature centered over the western US
brings impacts to the CWA. This trough features alignment over the
Great Basin will allow for strong southwesterly flow aloft to mix
down to the surface and promote breezy winds across much of Utah as
well as transport sufficient moisture into the region that will help
drive precipitation on Sunday into Monday. The trough feature is
expected to lift north and out of the region by the end of the day
on Monday, shutting off dynamical forcing for precipitation and
giving way to high pressure that will settle back in over the week,
bringing calm, dry and warmer conditions back to the CWA.

On Sunday the frontal boundary associated with the upper level
trough feature will move into the northern portion of the CWA,
bringing the best forcing and chance for precipitation during the
extended with 60% of ensemble members resulting in a wet solution.
The combined moisture transport and dynamic forcing from the trough
setup will make for favorable precip conditions, primarily for the
eastern half of Utah in the Wasatch Back, Uinta Mountains and parts
of SW Wyoming. During the afternoon, daytime heating is expected to
bring afternoon highs in the upper 70s and 80s which could promote
some low tier instability with deterministic models showing the
possibility for 100-300 J/kg which would be favorable for isolated
thunderstorm development. Also, ahead of the frontal boundary
deterministic models show areas of 40-50 knot winds at the 700mb
level that could mix down and create widespread 25-35 knot gusts
with high terrain areas seeing potential advisory level gusts closer
to 40+ knots. Winds could also effect much of the state over the day
due to any outflow boundaries that form from potential showers as
atmospheric conditions will be favorable for strong gusts to mix
down to the surface.

Showers could linger into Monday as the cold front drifts south and
east over the CWA before the trough is expected to lift out of the
region. Deterministics and ensemble guidance is heavily favoring a
ridging pattern to build back over the CWA and bring dryer and
calmer conditions to the region. Zonal flow returning aloft will
promote warmer conditions to return with near seasonal temperatures.

.AVIATION...KSLC...VFR conditions are expected at KSLC for the TAF
period. High pressure aloft will keep the SLC terminal mostly calm
under mostly clear skies for the day. Light southerly morning winds
are expected to increase this afternoon and could be breezy at times
with gusts near 20 knots.

.REST OF UTAH AND SOUTHWEST WYOMING...Clear skies and VFR conditions
are expected at all terminals during the TAF period. High pressure
over the CWA will keep conditions at most terminals mostly calm as
diurnally driven winds persist under mostly clear skies. Terminals
in southern UT could be breezy at times from the S/SW during the
afternoon with gusts near 20-25 knots.

.FIRE WEATHER...Southerly winds will begin to increase especially
across the western Utah today. These winds will lead to isolated
critical fire weather conditions with the airmass trends warmer
while remaining dry. As a storm system approaches tomorrow, winds
increase more significantly throughout the area. Although midlevel
moisture will begin to increase, humidities at the surface will
remain on the low side and widespread critical fire weather
conditions are expected. A few showers will develop mainly across
the mountains and eastern valleys tomorrow, with little chance of
wetting rain. Isolated to widely scattered dry thunderstorms will be
possible, but this will mainly be across northeast Utah, the central
mountains and east- central valleys. As moisture continues to
increase on Saturday, humidities will increase and a chance of
wetting rains increase. However, western Utah will remain dry, and
far western Utah could continue to see critical fire weather
conditions. Showers continue into Sunday before drier conditions
return.
