.SYNOPSIS...An upper level trough approaching the Pacific Coast
will tap into monsoonal and somewhat tropical moisture Friday
bringing strong winds and the potential for microbursts Friday
afternoon and evening. Moisture will deepen Saturday, with
thunderstorms containing potentially heavy rain possible across
areas near and east of I-15 Saturday afternoon and evening,
continuing into Sunday morning.

.SHORT TERM (Through 06Z Sunday)...An unusually active late June
short term forecast. Mid to late June is typically the driest
portion of the year for much of Utah...but not this year.
An upper level trough is approaching the Pacific Coast, with
parent lows currently near 46N 134W. This strong trough is
expected to bring a multi-hazard event to the region. Meanwhile,
Hurricane Blas is located off the southwestern Mexican Coast and a
monsoonal trough is set up over Mexico.
As the upper level trough elongates off the Pacific Coast, deep
tropical moisture transport will begin to impact the area Friday
afternoon and evening. One of the biggest questions with the
current forecast will be the location of the moisture gradient.
Currently expect the moisture gradient to set up near to east of
I-15, with a dry slot near and west of I-15 Friday into Saturday.
A review of the 00Z ensemble systems indicated there were three
primary solutions ranging from the moisture gradient originally
locating across western Utah and advecting deep moisture as early
as Friday afternoon as far north of the Wasatch Mountains to
further east solutions that would keep the deep moisture gradient
further east and mainly impacting the eastern valleys of Utah.
By Friday morning, the bulk of the guidance supports 700mb flow
near 45-55kts mainly near and west of I-15. Expect wind gusts
near or above 58 mph to be common across the western valleys of
Utah, with gusts in excess of 45 mph for most of the rest of the
valleys across the state (with the exception of the eastern
valleys). Given this strong signal well represented in the
guidance envelope, issued a high wind watch for these locations
for Friday afternoon and evening. Areas of blowing dust will also
be possible, potentially as early as Thursday evening.
Depending on the depth of the moisture, expect convection to
develop near and east of the moisture surge Friday afternoon and
evening. GEFS mean SBCAPE values exceed 500 J/kg along the Wasatch
Mountains and east by Friday afternoon, with some of the members
showing at least 250 J/kg across much of the state. This combined
with favorable jet dynamics will support at least a isolated to
scattered microburst threat across much of the state, with the
exception of areas in western Utah west of I-15.
Moisture advection will continue through the evening into Friday
night, which will likely support deeper convection by Saturday.
Again, there is a range of solutions as to exactly where the
moisture gradient and dry slot will be located, but areas near and
east of the moisture gradient will have a threat of stronger
convection and heavy rainfall Saturday afternoon into Saturday
night. Areas of west of the main moisture surge may see another
day of very high winds, potentially as high as 50-60 mph.
Those will outdoor plans across southern and eastern Utah,
particularly Saturday as well as those near recent burn scars
should continue to monitor future forecasts.
.LONG TERM (After 06Z Sunday)...Global ensemble and deterministic
guidance sources remain in good agreement that a robust and
highly amplified mid/upper level trough will extend from the PacNW
southward into the Great Basin to begin the long term period.
With this, potentially impactful weather is still anticipated on
Sunday, with some chance of some lingering impacts into early
Monday, before the trough gradually translates further east and
begins lifting out of the region.
On Sunday, a cold front associated with the trough will be
gradually approaching NW UT, with a slow progression to the
east/southeast throughout the day. Ahead of this, a corridor of
strong 700mb winds around 40-50 kts will persist, yielding a
corresponding threat of strong wind gusts. Despite temperatures
moderating closer to climatological normal, forecast soundings
continue to suggest favorable conditions for mixing some of the
aforementioned high momentum air to the surface, particularly
throughout the southern half of UT and into the West Desert
region. Aside from this, there is some indication for some low end
instability (CAPE ~100-250 J/kg), and given the dynamic forcing
associated with the trough and approaching cold front, some
isolated showers/thunderstorms will be possible and would carry
the risk of strong and gusty outflows. That said, convective
coverage and PoPs throughout much of the western half of UT is
somewhat uncertain, given more limited moisture than that of the
eastern half of UT and SW WY. In general, ensembles suggest PWATS
of around 0.20" to 0.45" for the west half of UT, and around 0.45"
to 0.80" for east UT and SW WY. As such, there is a bit higher
confidence in more precipitation coverage for the latter areas.
Furthermore, given the ongoing strong southerly flow,
precipitation will likely be further enhanced along south facing
slopes. Any training cells or other convective enhancement could
result in higher QPF totals, and will be something to monitor.
Late Sunday overnight into Monday, the cold front will continue
to gradually slide southeast through UT. Given the flow direction
and magnitude of the wind field, there is some potential for
impactful winds in the Castle Country region. To that end, NBM 4.1
guidance suggests a corresponding corridor of 50% or higher
chance of wind gusts in excess of 48 kts. While there is slightly
less confidence in this exact scenario, it will also be one to
monitor in the coming days.
The cold front will continue into the southern 1/3 of UT by later
on Monday before gradually stalling and beginning to wash out to
an extent. Drier air will continue to filter in, leading to
minimal PoPs, with the exception of portions of the Uinta Basin
where the continued strong southerly flow associated with the
departing trough may yield isolated precipitation. Cooler air will
also work in, with lows Monday morning and highs Monday afternoon
around 5 to 15 degrees below climatological normal.
For the remainder of the long term forecast, guidance is in fair
agreement that the potent trough will continue to lift away from
the local forecast region. Mid/upper flow will remain zonal to
southwesterly however as increased ridging in the east-central
Pacific and central CONUS is largely anticipated, keeping
something of a longwave trough over the W CONUS. Locally, this
will yield dry conditions and a warming trend from Tuesday on into
the middle of the week.

.AVIATION...KSLC...VFR conditions are expected at KSLC for the
TAF period. The typical daily wind shift to the south will occur
between 04Z and 06Z. Winds will stay out of the southeast
overnight before going around to a more southwesterly direction.
Expect wind gusts between 20-25 mph with a potential to go as high
as 30mph. Clear skies will be over the area for the TAF period.
.REST OF UTAH AND SOUTHWEST WYOMING...Clear skies and VFR
conditions are expected at all terminals during the TAF period.
Typical daily wind shifts will occur after sunset this evening.
The winds will continue to remain light for the rest of the day
and into the overnight period. Winds will switch to be out of the
south to southwest between 16Z and 19Z for across the CWA. Wind
gusts between 25-30 mph, with isolated areas getting up to 35 mph,
are expected during the afternoon hours.

.FIRE WEATHER...An unseasonably strong disturbance will bring a
multi-hazard event to the region Friday through Sunday. Winds will
begin to increase Thursday afternoon and evening along the
Utah/Nevada border and isolated critical fire weather conditions
will be possible.
As the trough approaches the west coast, enhanced tropical/monsoonal
moisture will shift into the Desert Southwest. The leading edge of
this moisture will cross the area Friday afternoon and evening. This
will bring the threat of isolated to widely scattered dry
thunderstorms to the southern mountains and adjacent eastern valleys
where fuels are critical. Not to be outdone, the trough will also
bring VERY strong winds to the region, with the western third of
Utah seeing the potential for wind gusts in excess of 60 mph
combined with humidities less than 15%. This will bring the threat
of widespread critical fire weather conditions to locations where
fuels are critical (primarily southern and southwestern Utah) Friday
afternoon and evening.
Humidities will continue to creep up Friday night into Saturday,
mainly east of I-15. Areas west of I-15 may see another round of
critical fire weather conditions in the dry sector Saturday
afternoon and evening. Areas east of I-15 will see wetter
thunderstorms that may bring at least spotty wetting rains Saturday
afternoon and evening.
