.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure to our north will drift east tonight into Friday. A
strong cold front will approach Friday and move through Friday night
into Saturday. This frontal system will bring widespread rain to the
region Friday night, followed by sharply colder temperatures, strong
winds, accumulating snow in the western mountains, and very cold
wind chills Saturday and Sunday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
As of 1235 AM EST Friday...

Low clouds eroding over the New River and Greenbrier Valleys,
but persist from Wytheville south to the NC mountains/foothills.
another area of low clouds/fog also surging northward into
southside VA southeast of South Boston.

Near term solutions favoring clearing skies in the west to low
clouds/fog, dense at times around Danville-South Boston south
into the NC piedmont this morning. Patchy fog also possible into
the mountains as well per some high-res model 4cast soundings.

Previous discussion from Thursday evening...

Forecast remains on track this evening. Broken cloudiness
remains and temperatures are expected to drop into the 30s
overnight. Will have to contend with some patchy dense fog
overnight as well, mainly in the river valleys and into portions
of the Piedmont.

Forecast discussion as of 125 PM EST Thursday...

Cold tonight with areas of fog along the Blue Ridge, then
warmer Friday with Sunshine.

A 1024 mb High pressure to our north this afternoon will slide east
tonight into Friday. A low level easterly flow has held temperatures
down this afternoon. A few sprinkles or some drizzle may be
possible as the Southeast low center pushes off the Atlantic
Coast.

The combination of light easterly winds, and moist ground may result
in areas of fog and drizzle especially across the higher terrain of
the Blue Ridge from western NC into southern Virginia. Low
temperatures tonight will range from the around 30 degrees in the
mountains to the mid 30s in the piedmont with areas of fog along the
Blue Ridge.

As the high moves away south to southeasterly flow will increase
ahead of the cold front Friday. Dirty wedging will gradually erode
allowing temperatures to recover. High temperatures Friday will
vary from the lower 50s in the northwest mountains of Greenbrier
county to the mid 60s in the Piedmont.

Moderate confidence in the Near term Forecast.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
As of 233 PM EST Thursday...

Models have been consistent with the timing of this weekend's
frontal passage (late Friday night into Saturday). They also have
been steady with temperatures/dew points falling Saturday,
windy/gusty conditions following the frontal passage, and prefrontal
rainfall amounts. The one varying variable is post-frontal
precipitation associated with the deformation zone.

A strong cold front will move across the area Friday night into
Saturday morning. This front will move across the area quickly with
the duration of light to moderate rain lasting about 6 hours at any
given location. Rainfall amounts should range between half to one
inch.

There will be a brief dry slot before the deformation zone crosses
the area Saturday. This deformation zone is expected to move over
the area from mid-morning into the afternoon. This is peaking
heating, but temperatures across the mountains will be falling into
the 20s. The first unanswerable question at this time is, how much
snow will be lost to insolation? Since we have been on the warm side
of normal temperatures the past several weeks, the second question
is, how much snow will be lost to a relatively warm ground and, more
importantly, to warm concrete/asphalt surfaces? Weather models do
not take insolation or soil temperatures into account when forecast
snowfall. One thing that could over come isolation and warm ground
is high snowfall rates, which is always a possibility with a
deformation zone. One guarantee is that locations west of the Blue
Ridge will see snow Saturday, but the uncertainty lies with amounts.
Our latest forecast has snow accumulations of 4 to 6 inches in
western Greenbrier and 1 to 3 inches for upslope areas and mountain
counties with elevations above 3500 ft. Below 3500 feet, a dusting
to an inch is possible, the lighter amounts being towards the Blue
Ridge.

The more widespread weather issue Saturday will be the wind. Strong
pressure rises and cold air advection behind the front will bring
windy and gusty conditions to the area. Our favored high wind area
(along the Blue Ridge from Roanoke south into the North Carolina
High Country) could have gusty up to 60 MPH. Across the rest of the
mountains and the foothills, gusts up to 45 MPH are possible
starting late Saturday morning continuing into Sunday morning. Wind
gusts up to 40 mph are likely for the Piedmont Saturday afternoon
and evening.

The winds will produce wind chill values in the single digits and
teens starting Saturday afternoon into Sunday morning in the
mountains. At the same time, high temperatures in the 40s and 50s
to start the day, will fall into the 20s over the mountains and mid
to upper 30s over the Piedmont Saturday afternoon.

Dry surface high pressure will build in over the region late
Saturday evening into Sunday. Cold air will continue to filter in,
but the winds will relax by sunrise. Low temperatures will range
from the teens over the mountains to lower 20s east of the Blue
Ridge Parkway Saturday night into Sunday morning. A warm front aloft
may bring some high clouds into the the region Sunday. Under mostly
sunny skies and a dry air mass, temperatures will warm into the
upper 30s to lower 40s west of the Blue Ridge to upper 40s to lower
50s east.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 233 PM EST Thursday...

The parent cold high pressure will move off the east coast Monday
with temperatures returning to normal levels. Surface ridging
continues to influence our region Tuesday with dry weather and
warmer than normal temperatures.

Models are tracking a closed low across the Gulf states Tuesday and
Wednesday. Where this low goes once in the southeastern states
becomes a question. The ECM moves the low across the Carolinas then
out to sea. This scenario would bring precipitation to the area
Wednesday night into Thursday. The GFs has the low moving from the
southern Appalachian to the Delmarva coast. This precipitation event
would be Tuesday night into Wednesday night.

.AVIATION /06Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 1230 AM EST Friday...

Skies should stay mainly VFR at most sites this morning, but
could see sub VFR cigs at BLF/BCB/DAN, with highest confidence
that DAN experiences sub 1kt cigs and some dense fog from
10-13z.

There could be some fog at BLF/BCB/LWB as well at times through
13z.

Low clouds/fog should scour out toward mid morning...14-15z,
with VFR through the day.

Clouds increase and lower by late afternoon into Friday evening
ahead of our front, with showers breaking out by end of the taf
period across the forecast area with best coverage pushing
toward southside VA and the WV mountains.

Have cigs dropping quick from VFR to IFR/LIFR for most by end of
the taf period with MVFR/VFR vsbys.

Confidence is average this morning before 15z, then above
average from 15-00z, then back to average at the end of this taf
period.

Winds will be light and variable overnight. Winds will become
southerly Friday.

Extended Aviation Discussion...

A strong cold front will cross the eastern United States Friday
night and Saturday, bringing widespread rain changing to snow
in the mountains and a lengthy period of sub-VFR ceilings/vsbys.
Strong winds appear likely Friday night ahead of the front and
Saturday behind the front. Much colder air will spread into the
area Sunday into Monday with some improvement in aviation
conditions, especially east of the Blue Ridge. Drier weather
will continue into Tuesday.

Sunday with morning lows Sunday of 10 to 15 degrees. The strong winds
combined with these temperatures will result in bitterly cold wind
