A strong cold front will move through tonight into Saturday.
This frontal system will bring widespread rain to the region
tonight, followed by sharply colder temperatures, strong winds,
accumulating snow in the western mountains, and very cold wind
chills Saturday night.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 905 AM EST Friday...

Winter weather advisories and warnings remain in effect early
Saturday into early Sunday.

Low clouds and fog are lifting this morning. Made some minor
adjustments in cloud cover and weather for this morning.
Modified temperatures with the latest surface obs,their trends
and blended in the latest NBM for late morning into this
afternoon. No changes to winter headlines at this time. But will
be look at winds especially off the 12z model runs for Saturday
into Sunday. More changes later this morning...

Previous Discussions:
As of 615 AM EST Friday...

Fog and low clouds continue to plague portions of the piedmont
of VA/NC as well as the New River Valley south into the NC
mountains/foothills. Models and sounding 4casts reflect that
these low clouds and fog should be eroding toward late morning
with sunshine setting up for most of the late morning/afternoon
before more clouds roll in ahead of our storm system tonight.

Previous discussion...

Spring Changes To Winter Late Tonight...

Weak high pressure settled over the Virginia/North Carolina piedmont
along with light wind/moist ground leading to fog/low clouds across
southside VA into the NC piedmont. Some lower clouds also stuck
across the NC mountains/foothills. The fog will be dense in a few
spots through 8-9am with the low clouds eroding by 15z/10am.

Models projecting a mostly sunny day once low stuff dissipates.
South winds will allow for temperatures to warm above normal, into
the 60s for most, some 50s in the mountains. Will start to see warm
advection/isentropic lift induced clouds moving in late in the
afternoon toward the NC/VA border, with more clouds starting to
develop/move in from the west ahead of the cold front.

All models show a deep 5h trough from the Great Lakes/Ontario south
the lower MS Valley by 12z Sat, with the cold front pushing east of
the Blue Ridge by then. Along/ahead of the front expect showers to
increase this evening. Instability seems limited given timing of the
rain, so left thunder out, but some of the higher res models are
showing a potential line of convection/heavier showers moving across
our piedmont late tonight. However, low level winds are not too
strong compared to what we saw earlier in the week, so severe/wind
threat along/ahead of the front is limited to none. Better
instability will reside further southeast into the coastal Carolinas.

Rainfall amounts into Saturday morning will range from close to an
inch over the piedmont, to around a third to half an inch in the
mountains.

Overnight, models show some differences in how quickly the colder
air moves in. Leaned toward blend of the NAM/GFS. Forecast soundings
from various models and high-res solutions suggest some potential
warm air aloft with cold air undercutting it when rain transitions
to wintry precip. Would not be surprised to see some sleet mixed in
during this transition in the mountains but the general flavor will
be rain changing to snow. This transition will reach western
Greenbrier as early as 1am, with the snow making it as far east as
the New River Valley to NC mountains around dawn/7am.

With snow continuing into Saturday, amounts will be sufficient for
at least an advisory over the mountains from the Alleghanys to the
NC High Country, but leaving out the Roanoke/New River Valleys. More
snow is anticipated further west outside our forecast area into
Kentucky as the colder air/precip come in more during the night.
However, western Greenbrier County should see enough to warrant a
warning with 4-6 inches expected. This snow will be wet with onset
of about 5:1 snow-liquid ratio, but increasing to 8:1 by 12z Sat in
the highest elevations.

Temperatures drop to the 20s by dawn Saturday in the WV mountains
southwest to the far southwest VA mountains, to lower 30s east to
the New River Valley/NC mtns and Alleghanys, with upper 30s to lower
40s Roanoke/Lynchburg and mid to upper 40s southside VA/NC piedmont.

Winds will start to ramp up as daybreak occurs, but strongest winds
occur in the next period.

Forecast confidence is excellent on today's weather, dropping to
average on transition of rain to snow/sleet tonight, but above
average on rainfall.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
As of 410 AM EST Friday...

     Accumulating snow, windy, and cold conditions Saturday as a
potent storm system crosses. Dry and milder early next week...

Overall not much has changed in the current forecast package for
this weekend's storm. It will be a true case of weather whiplash as
a potent cold front and southern stream low pressure system cross the
region Saturday morning into Saturday afternoon. Models continue to
remain consistent on a frontal passage during the wee hours of
Saturday morning from west to east across the region. Rain will
accompany the boundary on the front end before quickly changing to a
little sleet and eventually snow as temperatures/dewpoints steadily
crash. This will likely occur before daybreak west of the Blue Ridge
with highs around 40 at midnight Saturday falling to around freezing
along the western facing slopes of southeast West Virginia and the
Mountain Empire region by 12z/7am Saturday morning. The cold will
continue east into the New River and Roanoke Valleys, western North
Carolina mountains, and Alleghany Highlands by mid afternoon with
temperatures at or below freezing before spreading east into the
Piedmont late Saturday afternoon into Saturday evening. Some
uncertainty remains in regards to how quickly the cold rushes in as
well as to where an associated deformation axis and dry slot set up
as rain changes to snow.

Models continue to illustrate a dry slot taking hold mid to late
Saturday morning across the North Carolina foothills surging north,
along and east of the Blue Ridge Parkway Saturday afternoon. At the
same time, a deformation zone is expected to move across the region
which would enhance precipitation mainly west of the Blue Ridge
Parkway and into the higher terrain of the western North Carolina
mountains as well as southeast West Virginia. Since all of this is
happening during the peaking heating of the day, the question
remains to how much snow accumulation we will actually see due to
insolation and warm ground temperatures with recent days in the 50s,
60s, and 70s. For that reason, went ahead and trimmed snow totals a
bit due to these factors with a look more representative of a
lighter snowfall on the grassy surfaces of the valley floors and
impactful accumulation along the ridges and at elevations above 3500
feet. Either way high confidence remains for snow west of the Blue
Ridge Parkway Saturday. Our latest forecast has snow accumulations
of 4 to 6 inches in western Greenbrier and 1 to 3 inches for upslope
areas and mountain counties with elevations above 3500 ft. Below
3500 feet, a dusting to an inch is possible, the lighter amounts
being towards the Blue Ridge and Virginia Piedmont.

Winter Storm Warnings have been issued as result for criteria in
western Greenbrier County with Winter Weather Advisories across the
southern Shenandoah Valley west into the Alleghany Highlands and
south along the WV/VA border into the western North Carolina
mountains. Highest impacts will be in the warning area with periods
of whiteout conditions due in part to persistent upslope snow
showers and gusty winds through early Sunday morning. Minor impacts
are likely in the advisory zone as the main thump of snow early
Saturday transitions to upslope snow showers that look to persist
into late Saturday afternoon.

On top of the snow, the real weather concern for Saturday appears to
be the wind. Strong pressure rises and cold air advection behind the
front will bring windy conditions to the area. Our favored high wind
area (along the southern Blue Ridge from Roanoke south into the
North Carolina High Country) could have gusts up to 60 MPH. Across
the rest of the mountains and the foothills, gusts up to 50 MPH are
possible starting late Saturday morning continuing into Sunday
morning. Wind gusts up to 40 mph are likely for the Piedmont
Saturday afternoon and evening. The winds will produce wind chill
values in the single digits and teens starting Saturday afternoon
into Sunday morning in the mountains.

By Sunday, dry 1032 mb high pressure builds over the region. Winds
will gradually relax, but cold air will continue to filter in.
Temperatures will start in the mid to upper teens for most Sunday
before rebounding back toward 50 degrees as a weak warm frontal
boundary aloft lifts through the region. Even warmer conditions move
in the area Monday as surface high pressure slides east toward the
Atlantic coast. South to southwesterly flow will make a return
building moisture in the form of mid to high level clouds across the
region. Highs will be back to normal if not slightly above normal
ranging from the upper 50s over the mountains to low 60s across the
Piedmont.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 410 AM EST Friday...

Temperatures continue to gradually warm with our next chance for
rain by mid to late week.

Surface ridging continues to influence our region Tuesday with dry
weather and warmer than normal temperatures.

Beyond this point, models continue to track a closed low pressure
system that will gradually ride north and east from the Gulf Coast
States late Tuesday into Wednesday  Where this low goes once in the
southeastern states becomes a question. The GFS has the low moving
from the southern Appalachian to the Carolinas/Delmarva coast
Wednesday afternoon into Thursday. The Euro on the other hand has a
low that continue toward the Carolina coast during the same
timeframe. For now went with a blend of the two illustrating highest
precipitation chances across the VA/NC Piedmont as well as western
NOrth Carolina mountains Wednesday afternoon into Thursday. We
briefly dry out Friday before another storm system for the weekend.

Confidence is moderate in the long term.

.AVIATION /18Z FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 1233 PM EST Friday...

VFR conditions will continue this afternoon into this evening.
Then, lower clouds arrive tonight ahead of the cold front with
rain and sub-VFR predominant for all sites after 03-05z.

Rain changes to snow before ending Saturday even at LYH and
possibly DAN. The biggest impacts will be in the western upslope
favored locations in the mountains. Snow flurries and snow
showers will linger in the mountains Saturday. While in the
east, it will turn out VFR conditions. Winds will also hinder
aviation operations with gust 30 to 50 mph Saturday at all
sites.

Moderate confidence in ceilings,visibilities and winds during
the taf period.

Extended Aviation Discussion...
 Sub-VFR cigs and a few snow showers or snow flurries may
linger Saturday into Saturday night at BLF/LWB. Winds are going
to stay up into Saturday evening subside by Sunday morning. VFR
returns to the mountains by then, and continues into Tuesday
with high pressure in control. Dry weather continues on
Tuesday night, then moisture lift north across the region on
Wednesday with the potential for Sub-VFR conditions.
