Issued at 600 PM MST Sun Feb 20 2022 ...Red Flag Warnings for Monday have been expanded to include southern El Paso and Crowley counties... Quick update to allow current set of Red Flag Warnings to expire for this evening. Winds have decreased across all areas, with gusts below critical thresholds. For tomorrow, have expanded current suite of Red Flag Warnings to include southern El Paso and Crowley counties. Latest high res models suggest a period of gusty winds and low humidities before the cold front moves through. Dew points are likely to be down on the lower end of the ensemble spreads again tomorrow which will put conditions into the critical category across these zones as well. Update will be out shortly. -KT && .SHORT TERM...(This evening through Monday) Issued at 256 PM MST Sun Feb 20 2022 Key Messages: 1) Critical fire weather conditions will continue through early evening along the I-25 corridor, and are expected once again Monday across much of the southeast plains. Red Flag Warning has been issued. The well above normal warmth, really low dewpoints and RH values, and gusty winds remain in place at this time. Expect these similar conditions to persist over the next couple of hours along the Red Flag Warning area. It is possible that some locations continue to observe these conditions slightly longer into this evening, but given that I only anticipate that to be possible for an hour maybe two, did not extend the Warning. Winds do diminish this evening, though downslope conditions will help to provide another night of relatively milder conditions. West southwest flow will be in place on Monday ahead of digging trough to the west. Still anticipate several more defined pieces of energy to traverse this flow, with a rather deep low expected to develop over the plains. This will support strengthening winds and another day of well above normal warmth across the plains, with temps expected to rise well into the 60s. No change in thinking with this above normal warmth, low dewpoints and RH values, and gusty southwest winds supporting critical fire weather conditions over the southeast plains. Did upgrade the Fire Weather Watch to a Red Flag Warning. Kept the same coverage, though did debate adding in southern El Paso county. With the slightly cooler temps expected in this location, the RH values don't appear to be quite as low. Given trends over the last couple of days though, I wonder if my current RH forecast might need some additional adjustments. Will pass this along to the evening/midnight shifts, along with the possibility of adding southern El Paso into the Red Flag Warning for Monday. .LONG TERM...(Monday night through Sunday) Issued at 256 PM MST Sun Feb 20 2022 Key Messages... 1)Winter weather arrives late Monday into Tuesday, bringing snow to most of the area I-25 and west. 2)Snow amounts vary, but some of the mountains could get amounts measured in feet, while some adjacent lower areas get a few inches. 3)Cold temperatures will set in across the entire area through the end of the week, starting Tuesday, as cold air spills in behind an Arctic cold front. The long-term period will be active across most of Colorado, with multiple waves passing over in the upper levels, providing us with multiple chances of widespread precipitation, especially over the mountains. Additionally, a massive influx of arctic air will pass down over the plains post-front, dropping temperatures across the region considerably. The first wave, along with the initial cold front, will pass over our area late Monday night into Tuesday. Snow will begin overnight over the Continental Divide and the San Juan Mountains, and likely not completely stop for several days. Winds aloft will continue at a moderate southwesterly flow, setting up great orographics over our western mountains to support the continued snowfall. Mostly, the snowfall will be on the light to moderate side. However, there will be pockets of additional energy that will move through post-front and with the subsequent waves, imparting some more convective type energy (and perhaps a little CAPE, depending on the model solution) to areas over the San Juans and potentially other areas. This could result in more brief periods of heavy, convective-type snow showers, which will help to ramp up total accumulations and further degrade travel conditions in these areas. Throughout the day Tuesday through Wednesday, the snowfall will continue over the mountains, bringing sizable amounts to the Sangres and Wets, while dusting the San Luis Valley and potentially the I-25 corridor with lighter accumulations. Total snow accumulations will continue to be in flux over the next few days, but the current consensus is 1 to 2 feet over parts of the Continental Divide, 2 to 3 feet over the San Juan Mountains, 4-8 inches over most of the rest of the higher terrain, and then 1-2 inches over the SLV and I-25 corridor. The evolution of these snow amounts will be dependent on the evolution of the upper-level system, and how long certain areas will be supported by orographics. The second wave will pass by on Thursday in the form of a positively- tilted upper-level trough, which will move by quickly, after which the precipitation over the area will begin to wane. Widespread precipitation should end in our CWA late Thursday night into early Friday. The other main concern this week will be the influx of cold temperatures, brought on by the passage of the initial cold front. Between Monday and Tuesday, high temperatures are expected to drop nearly 40 degrees across the eastern plains, only hitting the mid- high 20s in a few areas closer to the mountains. These highs are expected to persist through the end of the week. Nighttime lows will be the real concern. With a deep pool of colder air in place, low temperatures over the entire area will steadily decrease each night, with most areas staying in the single digits, and some valley areas and the higher terrain sinking into the negatives by Thursday- Friday. Another weaker upper-level wave is expected to pass across the region sometime in the Friday-Saturday timeframe, but at this time it appears starved for moisture, so there should be no major change to sensible weather heading into this weekend, other than temperatures slowly recovering. && .AVIATION...(For the 00Z TAFS through 00Z Monday evening) Issued at 256 PM MST Sun Feb 20 2022 VFR conditions with dry weather are expected across the TAF sites this period.
