No real big changes at this time for today, only made some minor
adjustments sky and temp trends. Did increase sky cover slightly
given the extensive and dense high clouds in place. Some clearing
possible, but with these clouds likely to remain mostly in place
today. Even with this cloud cover, temps have increased quickly
this morning with temps in the 60s still expected across the
plains. No changes to the Red Flag Warning with many locations
already meeting criteria, and with that expected to continue for
much of the afternoon. Front to the north quickly diving south
across the region, and will impact the area this evening. Only
change going into the evening was to speed up the timing of the
front as well as increase speeds/gusts. Gusts up to around 40 mph,
maybe 50 mph, will be possible with FROPA by late this afternoon
and early evening.

.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)

Key Messages:

1) Critical fire weather conditions again today along the I-25
corridor and over portions of the southeast plains, and a Red
Flag Warning is in effect for these locations.

2) Arctic cold front drops south through the plains this evening,
with bitterly cold air mass banked up against the eastern mountains
by early Tuesday morning.

3) Light snow and flurries along the Continental Divide today will
become steadier and heavier snow tonight, as a long period of
heavy mountain snow begins.

Currently, rather mild morning across the region as weak downslope
wly breezes prevail, keeping temps in the 20s/30s at many locations.
Single digit dewpoints already in place across the mountains and
Interstate 25 corridor, a sign of very dry air and low RH
expected over the area later today. Overall, forecast for today has
changed little the past 24 hrs, with dry/windy and very mild weather
expected across the bulk of the area. Red Flag Warning includes most
of the I-25 corridor and southeast plains, as deep mixing
develops under increasing sw flow aloft, with period from around 2
pm to 6 pm looking most critical. One wild card to consider will be
increase in mid/upper level cloud cover ahead of digging wrn U.S.
upper trough, which could delay/limit mixing somewhat, though with
a very mild start to the day and low levels already dry, current
thinking is impact should be minor. Models have continued to slow
the cold frontal passage down, and it now appears all of the area
will remain ahead of the boundary through the day. As a result, have
nudged max temps upward a few degf along and east of the mountains.
A few flurries or snow showers may develop along the Continental
Divide this afternoon, though any accumulating snow will likely hold
off until this evening. Tonight, first piece of the upper trough
lifts by to the north, bringing just a brief period of synoptic
upward motion to the region. Main driver of precip overnight will
thus be orographic upslope flow, as mid level swly winds increase
into the 30-40 kt range. Set-up favors ern San Juans initially,
though higher west facing slopes of the Sawatch will see
accumulations start as well. Away from the Divide and the strong
orographics, much lighter snow expected, with just some light (1-2
inch) accumulations expected by Tuesday morning. Arctic front will
drop quickly southward through the plains in the evening, with winds
turn nely initially, then more e-se toward Tue morning as cold air
deepens. Clouds will thicken and lower behind the front, with some
flurries/fog possible toward Tue morning as flow turns more sely.
Forecast soundings suggest risk of freezing drizzle is fairly low,
as by the time the boundary layer saturates, cold air will have
become deep enough to keep most precip in the form of snow.

.LONG TERM...(Tuesday through Sunday)

Key Messages:

1) Winter weather will impact the forecast area during the week
multiple times, but especially Wednesday into Thursday morning.

2) Frigid temperatures will continue to overspread much of the
forecast area during the week, as cold air spills in behind an
Arctic cold front.

Tuesday... An active stretch of weather is expected for the long
term period. Starting Tuesday, the jet stream will take on a more
zonal flow pattern over southern Colorado. Strong west/southwest
mid to upper level winds will be streaming over the region. Given
this, robust orographic lifting will be present over the higher
terrain features, especially the southwestern mountains. At the
surface, winds will maintain a modest easterly component, which
will aid in weak surface upsloping along the eastern terrain
features. With this information, stratiform snow is expected along
the mountain ranges in the forecast area given the orographic
forcing. The snow will be more widespread along the western and
central mountains. The eastern mountains will see more isolated to
scattered pockets of snow, with some precipitation maintenance
help from the weak surface upsloping. The southwestern mountains
are expected to see the heaviest snow rates, as they will have the
longer residence time in southwesterly flow. There is a small
chance, around 10% or less, that transient convective snow bands
develop along the southwestern mountains, as low CAPE values
materialize around that area. If the precipitation where to take
on a more convective nature, even for a short period of time,
higher snow fall rates and totals would be likely under those
bands. Most of the snow will maintain a presence through the
Tuesday afternoon and overnight hours as the strong
westerly/southwesterly flow persist. Across lower elevations, more
isolated to widely scattered pockets of light stratiform snow are
likely as they push off of higher terrain features. Another
winter threat to the forecast area will be the frigid temperatures
spilling across southern Colorado. Temperatures will likely be
well below average for this time of year. Windchills will also be
incredibly cold, with most seeing near and below 0°F wind chills
Tuesday night.

Wednesday - Thursday... Moving into the mid week period, a large
trough will begin digging south/southeastward towards the Colorado
area. As this feature starts pushing over the region, synoptic
support and dynamics will start to rise considerably over southern
Colorado, which will aid in precipitation development and
maintenance. Winds aloft will also increase and become more
southwesterly during the day Wednesday, inducing stronger orographic
forcing over the mountains. Ahead of this trough, higher moisture
content will become advected over southern Colorado. Given this
information, snow is expected to increase in coverage and intensity
during the day Wednesday, especially across the southwestern
mountains. As the trough continues to trek eastward overnight
Wednesday and into Thursday, better synoptic dynamics will also push
eastward. With this, more light stratiform snow is likely to follow
the system eastward, overspreading much of the forecast area. By the
afternoon Thursday, the trough will be exiting the Colorado region.
As this takes place, precipitation intensity and coverage will
slowly decrease through the day Thursday. Like with Tuesday, frigid
temperatures will still be present across southern Colorado.
Temperatures will continue to be well below average, and wind chills
will be much below 0°F during the overnight hours.

Friday - Saturday... Near the end of the work week, another quick
moving short wave trough will pass over the region. This wave will
begin pushing over the forecast area during the day Friday. Like
with the previous systems, synoptic support and dynamics will
increase in response to this system. Moisture content will be more
limited with this wave though given how quickly it will be coming in
behind the bigger system earlier in the week. With that though,
scattered pockets of precipitation are likely along the mountains as
the system digs southward. This wave will be racing across Colorado
though, and will begin exiting the area by Saturday afternoon. As
this takes place, any lingering precipitation will dissipate, and
most, if not all, precipitation should be gone by the late evening
on Saturday. As with the theme of the rest of the week, Arctic air
will still be present over the forecast area, though will slowly
begin warming. Temperatures will still be well below average during
this period though, with wind chills still near 0°F during the
overnight hours.

Sunday... Looking at the last day in the long term period, a ridge
of high pressure builds over the western US and pushes eastward
across southern Colorado. This will bring more synoptic descent to
the forecast area. This will keep precipitation chances low across
the region. Temperatures will also start to quickly warm under this
feature, likely warming closer to average values for this time of
year.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Tuesday afternoon)

Relatively quieter conditions in place will begin to change this
forecast period, as an upper level system approaches the area.
VFR conditions with dry weather currently in place across all of
the terminals, with only high level cloud cover in place. Expect
similar trends for much of the day but will see lowering VFR
ceilings later this evening into Tuesday morning. For ALS and PUB,
the VFR conditions/ceilings will continue through the period,
though some isolated light snow is possible at ALS tonight. For
COS, ceilings will continue to lower with MVFR ceilings expected
by early Tuesday morning. Snow will become possible at COS later
tonight, but at this time, looks to remain isolated to scattered.
Given this trend and with lower confidence, have only added a VCSH
at this time. Additional light snow will also be possible at COS
very late in the period but with even lower confidence on this
possibility, have left out of the TAFs at this time. Will continue
to monitor trends, and make any necessary adjustments.

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of central...east
central...south central and southeast Colorado.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Critical fire weather conditions are likely from late morning into
early evening today along the I-25 corridor from Colorado Springs
south to the New Mexico border, and over the southeast plains,
mainly along and south of the Arkansas River. Tonight, snow will
develop along the Continental Divide, becoming heavy at times after
midnight. The heaviest snowfall will be over the eastern San Juan
Mountains, and several inches of snow will be likely over Wolf Creek
and Cumbres Passes by early Tuesday morning. Over the remainder of
the mountains, occasional light snow will be possible overnight,
with an inch or two of accumulation by Tuesday morning.

On the plains, a strong cold front will move through the area this
evening, bringing gusty northeast winds and rapidly falling
temperatures. By sunrise on Tuesday, wind chills will drop into the
single digits above and below zero at many locations along and east
of I-25.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Tuesday through Sunday

Multiple waves of accumulating snow are expected across southern
Colorado during the week. Rounds of light to moderate snow will
impact the southeast mountains with the heaviest falling Tuesday
night and Wednesday night through Thursday morning. Snowfall
estimates through Thursday put 1 to 2 feet along the Sawatch and
Sangre de Cristo Mountains and 3 plus feet along the San Juan
Mountains, and 1 to 4 inches for the adjacent lower elevations. The
heaviest snow will impact the eastern San Juan mountains with the
Sawatch Range and the higher elevations of the Sangre De Cristo
mountains also seeing some moderate to heavy amounts. This type of
snow will make travel difficult to near impossible along mountain
roads and passes during the week.

Frigid temperatures will also overspread much of the forecast area
during the week behind the cold front. Temperatures will likely be
25 to 35°F below seasonal averages. Wind chills will also be
bitterly cold, likely well be 0°F for most of the forecast area.
