Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Pueblo CO 1134 AM MDT Mon May 23 2022 .SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight) Issued at 440 AM MDT Mon May 23 2022 Key Messages: 1) After a lull this morning, rain showers and isolated thunderstorms will redevelop and become widespread across the area this afternoon and overnight. 2) Briefly strong to severe thunderstorms may be possible in Baca County late this afternoon. 3) Heavy snow is likely over the higher peaks of the eastern mountains this afternoon and overnight. Currently, latest band of rain showers was beginning diminish in intensity as of 4 am, as it slowly moves eastward across the plains. Weak upper wave which was forcing the precip will move into the central plains this morning, and with very weak downward motion briefly across the area, expect most locations to stay precip free through mid-day, though clouds and perhaps a few sprinkles/flurries may linger over the mountains. Upward motion then begins to increase this afternoon ahead of digging wave moving toward Colorado, and expect showers to become fairly widespread across the region by 00z. These is just enough instability (CAPE of 200-500 J/KG) present to warrant an inclusion of thunder in the forecast, though deep/strong convection is not expected at most locations. Exception might be the far southeast plains in Baca County, where nose of more unstable air, with CAPE near 1000 J/KG briefly pushes northward late this afternoon, and a strong/briefly severe storm may be possible, before activity quickly moves eastward into KS/OK by early evening. Some warming of max temps again expected today, though with clouds/moisture in place, NBM numbers looked rather ambitious, and shaded readings down toward cooler MOS guidance. Tonight, slow moving upper wave amplifies over Colorado, with strong upward vertical motion expected through the night. As a result, expect widespread showers/isolated thunderstorms to persist into Tuesday morning, with some pockets of heavier rainfall possible, especially over the southeast plains, south of the Arkansas River. Mountain peaks will be cold enough for snow, and several inches of accumulation look possible above 10k-11k feet. As a result, expanded the winter wx advisory to include the higher peaks of the Sangres, in addition to continuing current highlights for Pikes Peak and the higher portions of the Wet Mountains. .LONG TERM...(Tuesday through Sunday) Issued at 440 AM MDT Mon May 23 2022 Key Messages: 1) Unseasonably cool with rain and snow showers Tuesday. 2) Warmer and drier weather through the end of the work week. 3) Increasing fire danger and chances of precipitation into the weekend. Tuesday-Tuesday night...Models remain in good agreement of increasing northerly flow aloft across the region through the day Tuesday and especially Tuesday night, as the main upper trough finally translates east of the Rockies. Models do differ on the location of a developing closed circulation across eastern Colorado Tuesday afternoon leading to differences with precipitation amounts within deformation bands. Either way, there should be ongoing precipitation across the eastern mts and plains early Tuesday morning, with snow levels down to between 8000-9000 ft, before lifting back up to around 10000 ft through the late morning and afternoon. Showers and thunderstorms continue across the higher terrain Tuesday afternoon and early evening, while depending on where the upper circulation sets up, there could be some wraparound precipitation across the southeast plains through the afternoon and evening, before all precipitation wanes as a drier and subsident airmass moves from west to east across area Tuesday night. Current grids indicate the potential for another 1 to 4 inches of snow across the higher terrain Tuesday and have kept the late seasonal winter weather advisory intact for the higher peaks across the eastern mts. Temperatures to remain well below seasonal levels on Tuesday, with highs in the 50s across the lower elevations, and mainly 30s and 40s across the higher terrain, with overnight lows mainly in the 20s and 30s across all of south central and southeast Colorado Tuesday night. Depending on how fast skies clear overnight, may need to go with frost/freeze highlights across the higher portions of the plains into early Wednesday morning. Warmer and drier conditions are expected to return to all of south central and southeast Colorado Wednesday and Thursday, as upper level ridging builds across the Rockies. Wednesday remains a transition day, with highs warming back into the 60s and 70s across the lower elevations and into the 40s and 50s across the higher terrain, with breezy north to northwest winds expected through the afternoon hours. Winds aloft become more westerly and temper somewhat on Thursday, with highs back to seasonal levels in the 70s to mid 80s across the lower elevations, and into the 50s and 60s across the higher terrain. Friday-Sunday...A warm and breezy pattern takes shape into the Memorial Day Holiday weekend, as upper level ridging flattens overhead with more eastern Pacific energy translating across the Northern Tier. Models differ on timing and location of embedded shortwaves translating across the Rockies, while another broad upper trough amplifies across the Intermountain West into early next week. The broad westerly flow will keep at and above seasonal temperatures across the region into the Holiday Weekend, while the hard to time waves will keep the potential for showers and storms over and near the higher terrain, along with possible convection across the eastern plains with drylines and passing fronts. There will also be increasing fire danger, especially across the southwest mts and San Luis Valley (areas that did not receive much if any precipitation this past week) with expected deep mixing leading to breezy afternoons. && .AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Tuesday afternoon) Issued at 1133 AM MDT Mon May 23 2022 At KCOS and KPUB.. A cold front is approaching from our NNW, which will bring northerly winds gusting up to 25kt at both terminals within the next hour or two. Winds will weaken in magnitude and become more and more easterly throughout this afternoon. MVFR ceilings and visibilities are expected to persist into tomorrow morning at both terminals, with showers moving in the vicinity early this afternoon and on station after 23Z at KPUB and after 05Z at KCOS. IFR ceilings will move in around the same time period. There is a chance for weak embedded thunderstorm activity this afternoon, especially near KPUB, but have left mention of it out of the TAFs for now, as confidence is still low at this point. At KALS.. The front will not arrive until closer to 22Z, so we'll see winds gusting out of the southwest and west at about 30kt before frontal passage turns them more northerly for this evening. Ceilings and vis are expected to remain VFR at KALS until after 06Z as winds shift more northeasterly , but preip looks like remain off station and along terrain east of the terminal as of right now. Rain and high elevation snow showers will be develop by mid- afternoon across the mountains, valleys and I-25 corridor, then become widespread over much of the area this evening and overnight. Isolated thunderstorms are also possible over the region this afternoon and tonight, with lightning, gusty winds, and some small hail the main storm risks. Accumulating snowfall is expected over the higher peaks today and tonight. Heavy snow is likely over the crest of the Sangre De Cristo Range, the summit of Pikes Peak and the higher portions of the Wet Mountains, generally above 10000 feet with some lighter accumulations down to 8500 feet. .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Tuesday through Sunday Additional light to moderate snow accumulations will be possible over the higher peaks of the southeast Colorado mountains on Tuesday, as showers and thunderstorms continue across the region behind a passing weather system. The main threats from storms would be lightning and locally heavy rainfall. Warmer and drier conditions are expected to return to all of south central and southeast Colorado through the middle of the work week, with breezy conditions and chances of afternoon showers and storms returning for Friday and into the Memorial Day Holiday weekend.
