Although Friday is going to be an extreme fire weather day and damaging wind day, there is also a threat for severe thunderstorms over the far eastern plains which could bring all convective hazards to the region. \/Hodanish && .SHORT TERM...(This evening through Thursday) Issued at 137 PM MDT Wed Apr 20 2022 Key messages: 1) Critical fire weather conditions are expected over the San Luis Valley, the Wet Mountain Valley, and Fremont, Huerfano, and Las Animas Counties. Detailed discussion: Currently: Critical fire weather conditons are being observed over the San Luis Valley and the I-25 corridor, with the I-25 having more spotty critical fire weather conditions. Clear skies are being observed across the region, with mid level clouds across the region. Tonight and Tomorrow: Gusty winds will continue through the evening over the region, but by around sunset the winds will calm. Low temperatures tonight will be in the 30s to low 40s over the entire region. Another critical fire weather day is expected over the San Luis Valley, the Wet Mountain Valley, and Fremont, Huerfano, and Las Animas Counties, therefore a Red Flag Warning has been issued from 12pm to 9pm. Critical fire weather conditions are not expected to the east of the boundary, however spotty near critical conditions are possible. .LONG TERM...(Thursday night through Wednesday) Issued at 137 PM MDT Wed Apr 20 2022 Key Messages: 1)Widespread and extreme Critical Fire Weather conditions are expected across the area Friday afternoon. These conditions will be extremely dangerous. 2)High Winds, with gusts up to 70mph are expected over parts of our eastern plains Friday afternoon-evening. 3)Severe Thunderstorms, with the potential for supercells, will be possible Friday night over a dryline boundary that is expected to set up, the details of which are still being resolved. 4)Snow showers are expected over parts of the Continental Divide Friday night into the weekend. 5)Cooler, quieter weekend ahead with a warmup at the start of next week. Friday-Friday Night... Friday is expected to be an extremely busy weather day, with fire, wind, and severe all being on the table. The shift in conditions will be largely fueled by the dry airmass that has been in place over the region for several weeks, in tandem with the potent upper- level trough and associated jet that will be passing over. In general, we can expect increasing southwesterly winds, along with high temperatures 15-20 degrees above normal, potentially reaching into the mid-90s over the eastern plains. The specifics of each weather threat will be outlined below. Additionally, snow showers are expected to start Friday evening, lasting into the weekend, over the Continental Divide and potentially the San Juan Mountains. At this time, accumulations are expected to be fairly light and winter- related impacts should be minimal. Fire Weather: Friday will be an extreme fire weather day, with multiple factors contributing to a widespread and prolonged threat. First, the upper jet will already be moving overhead by mid-morning, with mixing and downsloping, southwesterly winds setting in over most of the area. This will serve not only to enhance mixing early in the day, but the downslope wind areas will also assist in bumping up temperatures. Additionally, with the notably dry airmass firmly in place from previous days, relative humidity Thursday night into Friday is expected to recover very little, only reaching towards 30 percent by morning before decreasing again. By afternoon, RH values across the area are expected to plummet into the single digits. High temperatures will likely reach into the low-mid 90s, and southwest winds will increase throughout the day. A Fire Weather Watch has already been hoisted for areas with highest confidence, and any ignited fires will be prone to extremely rapid growth and acceleration. Overall, the situation will be very volatile and dangerous. High Winds: With the main axis of the upper-level jet moving over on Friday, winds are expected to pick up across the eastern plains earlier in the day, not only exacerbating the Fire Weather threat but also posing concerns on their own. Timing on the onset of these winds will largely depend on the timing and development in the path of the upper low, but current consensus is for stronger winds to develop shortly before midday. As the trough progresses, the strongest winds will shift from the southern I-25 corridor to encompass our eastern plains. Current model guidance has potent 700mb winds over portions of Las Animas and Baca County, extending north, which are expected to at least partially mix down to the surface. Some model solutions keep High Wind criteria going over most of the plains for the entire afternoon and into the evening hours, with widespread gusts of 60-70 mph expected. These winds may be potentially damaging, and blowing dust will also be possible. A High Wind Watch has been hoisted at this time over areas of highest confidence. Severe Weather: Most uncertain portion of Friday's forecast will be the potential for severe thunderstorms Friday night. Model guidance shows the development of a rather sharp dryline somewhere along the Colorado- Kansas border. The uncertainty factor with this boundary comes from model inconsistency on the exact east-west placement. Some of the models, like the EC and the NAM, have dewpoints well into the 40s- 50s surging clear into Bent and Otero Counties, while the GFS and a few other deterministic and ensemble solutions place the dryline to our east in Kansas. With events such as this, unfortunately, the exact placement of the dryline will not become completely certain until the day of, likely just a few hours prior to convective development. As such, it is a situation that warrants close monitoring in the days to come. Looking at some early forecast soundings, however, the severe weather concerns become more prominent. NAM soundings along the moisture axis indicate nearly 3000 J/Kg of MLCAPE in some places, as well as some helicity values over 500 m^2/s^2. There are a few factors stemming from some more synoptic influence that may also inhibit convective initiation, but it is still a bit too far out to put too much stock in one way or the other. What makes this situation more concerning, though, is the timing. Current solutions have the greatest instability and the most favorable dryline position for convective development in our area after 6PM Friday evening, meaning that should convection kick off, the storms will likely move past populated areas after the sun has gone down, creating a potentially dangerous situation. Overall, certainty for storm development within our CWA Friday evening is low- medium, but if storms develop, certainty that these storms would become severe is high. Saturday-Sunday... Saturday-Sunday will be much calmer, weather-wise, and a fair bit cooler as well. A cold front will push south across the plains on Saturday, lowering high temperatures almost 20 degrees, with the moisture advection allowing for increased clouds and precipitation over most of the area, mainly from I-25 westward, for both days. Precipitation will likely fall as snow above 10kft over the mountains, while the lower elevations will likely see some rain showers. There may also be enough instability for a few thunderstorms over the eastern plains during the afternoon-evening hours. While some gusty winds may remain, moisture behind the front should be sufficient enough to limit any fire weather concerns for the weekend, and between that and high temperatures dropping into the low-60s to high-50s on Sunday, it should be a welcome reprieve from the last week or so. However, Fire Weather concerns for Saturday specifically are still non-zero, and will need to be monitored. Monday-Wednesday...
