Currently...Brisk west to southwest flow aloft across the region continues, with mostly clear skies and light winds at the surface. Temps have cooled into the 40s across the plains as of 3 AM, and into the 30s for the high valleys. Today...West to southwest flow aloft will begin to strengthen and shift to a more southwest direction through the day today as the upper low pressure system just off the West Coast sags to the south and starts to cross on land. However, low level flow across the eastern plains is forecast to remain out of the east for much of the day, drawing in higher dewpoints and helping to keep the relative humidity elevated. Surface winds across Las Animas County near the NM border are expected to shift southerly and increase through the afternoon, so the warm advection will likely shunt the llvl moisture and the ongoing Red Flag there looks good. However, latest HRRR run keeps easterly flow the entire day along the Arkansas River back across Pueblo County and into Fremont County, so the Red Flag for Fremont may not happen. Otherwise, plenty of sun today on tap though some smoke from NM fires will likely push up and to the northeast across the plains today. Plan on high temps in the 70s for the high valleys, and mid 70s to lower 80s for the plains. Tonight...The West Coast system moves onshore across CA tonight, and the southwest flow aloft strengthens impressively across the Four Corners as the pressure gradient tightens and the upper jet pushes into UT. Plan on mostly clear skies tonight and lighter south to southwest winds as the surface flow decouples from the stronger winds aloft. Overnight lows should be somewhat milder as well, with minimums in the mid 30s to lower 40s for the high valleys, and 40s to around 50F for the plains. Moore .LONG TERM...(Friday through Wednesday) Issued at 357 AM MDT Thu Apr 21 2022 .LONG TERM... Key Messages: 1) Multi faceted high impact event for Friday/Friday night ranging from High Winds and Extreme Fire Danger along with blowing dust, to potential for severe thunderstorms far eastern plains, to snow along the continental Divide. Potent negatively tilted upper trough will close off as it moves from the Great Basin into Wyoming Friday into Friday night. This will put southern CO under a strong south southwesterly upper level jet which will eject eastward across the region on Friday. Initial risks will be high winds which should set in during the morning for the southeast mountains, San Luis Valley and Raton Ridge regions, then spread northeastward through the late morning and afternoon. With deep mixing, we could easily see gusts in the 60 to 70 mph range. Areas to widespread blowing dust will be likely which could cause travel impacts along with the strong cross winds for travelers across the region. When coupled with humidity levels dropping well below 15 percent for the valleys, southeast mountains and plains, this will lead to Extreme Fire Danger for much of the area. For highlights, have upgraded the Fire Weather Watch to a Red Flag Warning with an earlier onset of 9 AM to account for rapidly lowering humidities and increasing winds across southern areas. The warning will continue until 9 PM as winds shift sharply from the west during the late afternoon and evening hours with the trough/frontal passage. Areas of blowing dust will also be a concern and may need to add some Blowing Dust Advisories or even Dust Storm Warnings as the event unfolds. Have also expanded High Wind Watches westward to include the San Luis Valley and Wet Mountain Valley, the Sangre de Cristo and Wet mountains and central and eastern Fremont county as well as the I-25 corridor counties of El Paso, Pueblo and Huerfano. Latest high res models suggest the axis of stronger winds has shifted/expanded westward to encompass these areas. Will need to watch central Chaffee county closely for possibly expansion of high wind highlights. Dry line across the far eastern counties may initiate some isolated severe thunderstorms during the late afternoon and evening hours. High res models suggest the potential for the dry line to back a bit westward during the early evening hours. With impressive CAPE and shear, all severe risks will be in play with the greatest potential near the KS border in the 00z to 06z timeframe. There are still varying solutions on the position of the dry line, but with several CAMs models showing the potential for thunderstorm initiation across far eastern CO counties, the risk for significant severe can not be discounted, especially as an area of Enhanced Severe potential is not too far to the east of the CO/KS border. Please continue to monitor the latest forecasts. And finally snow will ramp up along the Continental Divide Friday night and continue into the weekend as more energy drops southward in northwest flow aloft. snowfall amounts still look light at this point, but blowing snow could increase impacts in the Friday night/Saturday time frame with advisories for the higher peaks still not out of the question. The system ejects to the northeast with Saturday looking like another potential Red Flag Day for the southeast plains and San Luis Valley ahead of the cold front which will shift winds from the north Saturday afternoon and evening ushering in cooler temperatures and higher humidity values. Timing of the front still varies with the latest models and with 2 fire weather highlights already in play will not hoist any more fire weather highlights for Saturday just yet. Models do hint at some showers in and near the southeast mountains Saturday night though have trimmed back pops considerably as moisture does not look all that impressive. Another trough drops in for Sunday bringing the potential for another round of showers to the mountains and possibly the adjacent plains as well given some upslope in place. Please avoid any activities that could spark and ignite a wildfire. .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Friday through Wednesday Multiple high impact hazardous weather types are expected across Southern Colorado Friday and Friday night. High and potentially damaging winds as well as widespread extreme fire danger will spread across most of the forecast area on Friday. Damaging winds up to 70 mph and very low relative humidity will produce volatile conditions for rapid fire growth and spread. Areas of blowing dust could also pose visibility issues. The winds will also be hazardous to high profile vehicles. Isolated severe thunderstorms will be possible near the Kansas border, potentially from the La Junta area eastward, Friday evening, with the main risks being hail and damaging winds. Wind driven snow will spread into the Continental Divide Friday night into this weekend, with light to moderate accumulations.
