Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ 405 PM EDT Sat Jul 16 2022 .SYNOPSIS... High pressure will build offshore this afternoon as a weak front lingers across parts of Delmarva into Sunday. At the same time, a weak trough of low pressure will track across the area. A cold front is forecast to slowly settle across the region Monday night and Tuesday, then weaken and dissipate in place on Wednesday. Another cold front will arrive Thursday or Thursday night and once again stall over or to the south of the forecast area. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/... Little pattern change from yesterday with a stationary front settled over portions of Delmarva and far southern New Jersey. The front has lifted northward by 25 miles or so compared to this time yesterday with slightly stronger low-level southerly flow over the Mid- Atlantic. Temperatures are nearing their forecast highs this afternoon in the mid to upper 90s, approaching 90 over the Philly metro. Convection fired early today along the sea breeze, though little lightning occurred until enough SB CAPE was reached with surfaces reaching their convective temperatures AOB 83-86 degrees or so. Slightly stronger surface based instability this afternoon than yesterday with SB CAPEs more solidly above 2000 J/kg along and south of the front, a few readings surpassing 3000 J/kg over southern Delaware. Convective outflow and the sea breeze has pushed inland in the coastal areas, helping to stabilize the lower atmosphere, but some areas are beginning to recover. The strongest cumulus fields have formed mostly where these boundaries have stalled over south- central New Jersey. High clouds from remnant and new convection to our south and west is holding instability back a bit along and northwest. CAMs continue to agree that convection over southern Pennsylvania down into Maryland and Virginia will organize into a broken line segment and push eastward into at least the southern portions of our area in association with the main vorticity maximum and shortwave trough. Timing of this generally takes it through from 8 pm through midnight, slightly faster than some of the previous runs from this morning, but some showers and downpours will likely linger through much of the night, albeit more scattered as the main broken line falls apart into the AM hours. While sufficient instability is present, LL shear remains quite weak (0-3 km values only around 15 knots or so, slightly weaker than yesterday even. The environment is a little more favorable along and south of the front, especially to our southwest, so the greatest severe threat remains mostly over southern New Jersey and into Delmarva. SPC has maintained a Marginal Risk area that just clips parts of the Eastern Shore of Maryland, which seems reasonable given the stronger shear to our southwest. The flooding threat remains a little greater with storm motion once again mostly 10 knots or less over the region. PWATs remain appreciable from 1.5 to 2 inches. While not record values by any means, these are still indicative of some heft moisture content and any shower or storm that does develop will likely produce locally torrential downpours. The fact that storm motion is so weak, could lead to some localized flooding. Thankfully the greater instability is mostly over areas that can handle rainfall of 1 to 2 inches in an hour according to FF guidance, though any of these that fall over more urbanized areas could begin to cause issues. Lows tonight otherwise will stay mild in the upper 60s to near 70. Some patchy fog is also possible tonight, especially over areas that see rain given similar conditions to last night with light and variable winds. Cloud cover may stick around long enough to keep surfaces just warm enough to lead to more stratus than fog, but it may likely come down to who is able to clear enough. Tomorrow looks a bit quieter than today as we sit between shortwaves. While we can't rule out any scattered showers and thunderstorms, coverage looks much lower than today. Highs look to top out similar to today in the mid to upper 80s with heat indices in the upper 80s to lower 90s. The main concern turns to the next incoming shortwave for Monday for the next widespread precipitation. && .SHORT TERM /MONDAY THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/... The period begins with increasing moisture aloft riding in on mid- level SW flow. At the surface, increasing dewpoints will lead to the potential of some fog. Isolated to scattered convection should be ongoing, but does not look all that organized as the main upper- level feature is well west. Sunday night will offer warm and muggy conditions with near average overnight lows. The main story on Monday and Monday evening is the cold front and associated convection. PoPs are now categorical. PWATS are forecast to exceed 2.00". CAPE and shear are considerable. Could be a day with some localized impacts. Things begin to relax the second half of Monday night as said features wane. Afternoon highs and overnight lows will be about normal across the forecast area. The mid-level trough axis tracks east of the region on Tuesday. We get into a mid-level NW flow which will provide some drying. Only a stray shower looks possible at this time on Tuesday. Tuesday night looks to be precipitation free. The airmass will warm on Tuesday. The area should see some afternoon highs around 90. For Tuesday night, portions of the I95 corridor may not drop below the mid 70s. && .LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/... The heat and humidity will ramp up for Wednesday and Thursday. The ridge over the Central and Western US will elongate and nudge into our region, with 500 mb heights increasing. 850 mb temperatures on Wednesday will be in the 18-20C range, resulting in high temperatures in the low to mid 90s. Heat indices will mainly be in the upper 90s, with some spots getting close to 100F. Can't rule out some diurnal convective activity, but chances remain relatively low and a large majority of the region will stay dry. Temperatures will be a touch higher on Thursday as 850 mb temperatures get over 20C. Looking at highs in the mid 90s and heat indices potentially getting above 100F for areas east of the Fall Line. Thursday will also feature chances for showers and thunderstorms. A relatively potent trough will swing through the Great Lakes region and lift northeast into eastern Canada. At the surface, a cold front is anticipated to swing through. Still a lot of uncertainty regarding the timing of the front, which will play a large part in any severe prospects, but chc PoPs are in place for Thursday afternoon and evening for a majority of the area. The front should move offshore by Friday morning, but stall out nearby. While dewpoints are expected to be a bit lower, temperatures will stay rather warm. Temperatures on Friday will climb back into the upper 80s/low 90s, with guidance hinting at another period of above average temperatures for next weekend. && .AVIATION /20Z SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/... The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas. Through 00Z...Mostly VFR with localized restrictions associated with showers and thunderstorms, especially at MIV and ACY. Winds from the south-southeast 5 to 10 knots. Moderate confidence. Tonight...MVFR restrictions likely with scattered showers and thunderstorms through 07Z. Low stratus possible after the showers and thunderstorms move offshore after 06-07Z but low confidence in coverage and whether CIGs stay MVFR or trend lower to IFR. Patchy dense fog possible as well, especially at MIV and ACY, possibly as far north and west as the Philly terminals. Winds mostly light and variable, favoring the south. Low confidence. Sunday...Any MVFR restrictions are expected to gradually improve to VFR in the morning through 15Z as low clouds and fog lift.
