Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ 109 PM EDT Sat Jul 16 2022 .SYNOPSIS... High pressure will build offshore today as a weak front lingers across parts of Delmarva into Sunday. At the same time, a weak trough of low pressure will track across the area. A cold front is forecast to slowly settle across our area Monday night and Tuesday, then the front may dissipate in place on Wednesday. The next cold front arrives Thursday, however it may stall near our area Friday. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/... Showers have been active on the sea breeze through the morning and continues to be so over Monmouth County. Outflow has pushed the boundary to the west over slightly more stable air. Much of the same through the afternoon with scattered showers popping up and slowly raining themselves out due to weak shear and storm motion. Best chances for these will be over northern New Jersey and along the sea breeze over areas of eastern New Jersey. Very much a low confidence forecast in exact timing of when and where showers will form. So far no lightning, though weak instability could lead to some embedded thunder. A mid level short wave trough was located over the eastern Great Lakes and the Ohio River Valley early this morning. The feature will progress to the east with its axis forecast to pass over our region late tonight. Meanwhile, a west to east frontal boundary will continue to meander in Maryland, Delaware and southern New Jersey. The approaching short wave is expected to trigger the development of scattered showers and thunderstorms in our region during the mid to late afternoon. Remnant and newly developing surface boundaries will also contribute. The convection will likely be slow moving based on the forecast wind profile for today into tonight. The scattered showers and thunderstorms will likely not follow the usual diurnal trend by dissipating with the loss of daytime heating. The short wave is expected to keep the scattered convection going well into tonight. The wind is forecast to be variable at less than 10 MPH for today and tonight. Temperatures should be seasonable with highs mostly in the 80s and lows from the middle 60s to the lower 70s. && .SHORT TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/... An upper-level trough will gradually be approaching our region during Sunday. There could be some convection to start Sunday morning, mainly across Delmarva into far southeastern New Jersey associated with a lingering surface front. Otherwise, isolated to scattered convection should develop elsewhere during the course of Sunday and Sunday evening. It does not look all that organized as the main upper-level feature is forecast to be well to our west. However, the 0-6 km shear is forecast to increase into the 20-30 knot range especially Sunday night. Some lingering instability along with the closer approach of a shortwave tied to the aforementioned upper-level trough may then result in a little uptick in convection Sunday night. It will be warm and muggy although more cloud cover, which may be comprised of low clouds to start Sunday morning, should result afternoon highs near average. As we go through Monday, an upper-level trough will gradually cross the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions. A fairly strong shortwave is forecast to accompany the trough, and at the surface a cold front will be slowly making its way across our area. Increasing ascent tied to the upper-level trough and also the cold front should result in increasing shower and thunderstorm development. The highest PoPs are during Monday afternoon and evening. It will be warm and humid, and with MLCAPE around 1000 J/kg and the 0-6 km shear increasing to 30-40 knots (greatest near and north/west of I-95) may need to watch for some stronger storms with gusty outflow winds. A plume of 2.00- 2.50 inches of precipitable water is forecast to slide across our area, therefore convective elements will produce locally very heavy rain. It has been rather dry across much of the area, therefore any flood risk should be limited to mainly some urban spots. The convection should continue Monday night, although a decrease in activity is expected overnight as the cold front progresses eastward and air mass stabilizes. && .LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/... Summary...Hot and humid with the potential for a time of excessive heat; Limited convective chances overall, and a cold front arrives Thursday into Friday. Synoptic Overview...An upper-level trough lifts out during Tuesday and the flow aloft backs more zonal into Wednesday. A sharpening upper-level trough in the Midwest and upper Great Lakes region Tuesday night shifts east-southeastward Wednesday, crossing the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions Thursday. At the surface, high pressure anchored well offshore results in a south to southwest flow of hot and humid air. A cold front is forecast to settle across our area into Tuesday, however it may not get to far south and east as the upper-level trough lifts out. The front either lingers nearby or dissipates as another cold front looks to arrive Thursday into Friday. For Tuesday and Wednesday...An upper-level trough is forecast to be shifting northeast and east of our area during Tuesday, and the precipitable water values are forecast to lower to near 1.50 inches. This will settle the cold front farther south and east across our area, although it may end up dissipating with time. The flow aloft backs more zonal for a time, and some drier low-level air to our northwest may end up staying there as there appears to not be much of a southward push. Therefore, hot and humid conditions will be in place with afternoon heat indices Tuesday in the mid to perhaps upper 90s for most and then around 100 degrees Wednesday for many areas. A shower or thunderstorm cannot be ruled out each afternoon, mostly inland, given the hot and humid conditions. For Thursday and Friday...An upper-level trough is forecast to be sliding across the Midwest and Great Lakes region. As this continues to press eastward, a cold front will be arriving into our area mostly later Thursday. Some showers and thunderstorms should develop ahead of and with the front, although the severity of the convection will ultimately depend on the timing of the front, shear and instability magnitudes along with the forcing. Plenty of heat across the area, and while dew points might mix out a little for some spots during peak heating, Thursday afternoon heat indices are forecast to be around 100 degrees for many areas. The dew points are currently forecast to lower Friday as the cold front reaches the coast, however the front is more of a dew point boundary as afternoon highs are forecast to be into the upper 80s to lower 90s for many. && .AVIATION /17Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/... The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas. Today...MVFR/IFR conditions will improve to VFR at least by 15Z. Mostly VFR onward. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are forecast to develop mainly after 20Z and they could briefly reduce conditions to MVFR/IFR. Variable wind 8 knots or less. Medium confidence. Tonight...Mainly VFR until around 06Z with scattered showers and thunderstorms which could briefly reduce conditions to MVFR/IFR. More widespread MVFR/IFR conditions may develop after 06Z. Variable wind 8 knots or less. Low confidence. Outlook... Sunday...Local low clouds/fog possible to start, otherwise mostly VFR. Isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms, especially in the afternoon and evening. Southerly winds increasing to around 10 knots during the day, then diminishing some at night. Low confidence.
