What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this small craft advisory went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Philadelphia/Mount Holly wrote its last area forecast discussion before this small craft advisory went out at Jul 20, 1:44 PM EDT, 1 hour 35 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Jul 20, 1:44 PM EDT, 1 hour 35 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ
144 PM EDT Wed Jul 20 2022

.SYNOPSIS...
A warm front is expected to lift north of the area today. This will
result in a period of hot and humid conditions across the region
through Thursday. A cold front will then cross the area late
Thursday then pass offshore Thursday night. High pressure located
across the western Atlantic will then dominate the pattern into the
weekend with prolonged southwesterly flow resulting in a quick
return of oppressive heat and humidity through the weekend. Chances
of showers and thunderstorms will return Sunday and especially
Monday as another cold front approaches the area from the north. The
cold front will finally bring some relief from the extended heat
wave into early next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Given the low level moisture in place, radiational cooling will
be very inefficient tonight, so lows for most of the region
should stay well above 70 degrees (with the exception of the
southern Poconos). This could exacerbate impacts with the heat,
especially in areas affected by urban heat islands, where the
low could be closer to 80 degrees.

Thursday could be one of the more impactful days, heat wise as
high temperatures should be mostly in the 90s (again, with the
exception of higher terrain of the Poconos and NW NJ).
Additionally, we'll start the day with dewpoints well above 70.
However, as has been the case lately, guidance dewpoints don't
match the model soundings. Specifically, given how deep the
mixing layer should be, expect dewpoints to mix down to the 60s
for most areas by the afternoon. Consequently, heat index values
should be solidly within heat advisory criteria mostly for
areas near and southeast of the 95 corridor.

As for precipitation chances tomorrow, guidance has been
persistent at depicting QPF, generally along a weak cold front
that should be entering our region late in the day. It still
remains to be seen how much convective initiation we will see
in our region as the best forcing will be to our north and
larger CAPE values/instability will be to our south. Would
suspect that coverage will be limited at most. Given the dry
air, especially in the mid levels, there is some risk for
downdrafts if anything develops, so have added in a mention of
gusty winds.

&&

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
Dangerously hot and humid conditions are expected through Thursday.
Broad mid-level troughing arriving from the west early Thursday will
linger through much of Friday. At the surface, modest southwesterly
return flow will then prevail through Thursday advecting even warmer
temperatures and dewpoints into the region. A cold front, really
just a dewpoint gradient, will push into the area late Thursday then
move offshore overnight. The boundary will stall just south of the
area and linger there through much of Friday.

Another warm night is expected for Thursday night, but
dewpoints should generally begin to fall. Low temperatures are
expected to range from the mid 60s north of I-78 to the mid 70s
near and southeast of I-95.

Friday will see temperatures generally similar to that of Thursday
(low to mid 90s), however dewpoints will be some 10 degrees lower
(mostly in the 60s). Resulting Heat Indices are in the mid to upper
90s across much of the area. While conditions won't be as oppressive
as Thursday, it will still be quite hot. The lower dewpoints and
drier mid-level air will result in an otherwise fair weather day
under sunny skies. Yet another warm night is expected for Friday
night with low temperatures expected to range from the mid to upper
60s north of I-78 to the mid 70s near and southeast of I-95.

&&

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
A mostly zonal flow pattern is anticipated Saturday through Tuesday
with a Bermuda High located across the western Atlantic. The
prevailing southwesterly flow will once again bring oppressively hot
and humid conditions to the region. The hottest and most oppressive
day is expected to be Sunday with Heat Indices climbing to around
100-105 across much of the area. Many areas will likely experience 7
or 8 days in a row of 90 degrees or hotter by the end of this heat
wave. Chances for showers and storms will return Sunday and
especially by Monday as the next system approaches from the north.
An approaching cold front bringing convection and increasing cloud
cover in the region should begin to provide some relief from the
heat into early next week.

&&

.AVIATION /18Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE,
KRDG, KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Through 00Z...A sea breeze could affect KACY later today, but
not confident if it will reach that far inland thanks to the low
level westerly flow. Otherwise, westerly winds around 5 to 10
kts. VFR. High confidence on all aspects except the sea breeze.

Tonight... VFR. Winds should be light, and generally favoring a
westerly direction, but could be variable, especially in areas
where the winds are more likely to decouple (KABE, KRDG, and
KMIV). High confidence.

Thursday...Prevailing VFR, but isolated thunderstorms could
bring brief reductions in visibility and ceilings mostly after
18Z. Southwesterly winds 10 to 15 kt with some higher gusts
possible. Low confidence on if any individual TAF site will be
affected by TSRA, but otherwise moderate confidence.

Outlook...

Thursday night...Prevailing VFR. The winds will shift west to
northwesterly after 00Z and diminish to around 5 kts. High
confidence on prevailing conditions.

Friday through Sunday...Mainly prevailing VFR. West to southwesterly
winds 5-10 kts. A few thunderstorms are possible Sunday afternoon
northwest of I-95. High confidence.

&&

.MARINE...
Seas and winds will remain below SCA criteria through Thursday
morning as surface low pressure moves east towards the James Bay.
Southwest winds of 5 to 10 MPH today will likely start to back this
afternoon as a weak mid-level wave passes south of the waters. South
to southwest winds of 10 to 15 MPH will then persist through
tonight. Seas 3 to 4 ft.

Outlook...

Thursday and Thursday night...Small Craft Advisory conditions
likely. Southerly winds increasing to 15-20 kts with gusts around 25
kts. Seas 3-6 feet. The winds and seas will gradually diminish
overnight as a cold front moves offshore. Winds becoming
northwesterly around 10-15 kts. An isolated shower or thunderstorm
is possible.

Friday through Saturday...Sub-advisory conditions expected. Winds
southwesterly around 10-15 kts with seas 2-4 feet. Fair weather.

Sunday...Small Craft Advisory conditions possibly developing as the
day progresses with southwesterly winds increasing to 15-20 kts with
gusts up to 25 kts possible and seas 3-5 feet. Fair weather.

Rip Currents...

A southwest to south wind 10 to 15 MPH is expected for Today.
Breaking waves should be 2 to 3 feet with a medium period southeast
to south swell. There is a LOW risk of rip currents Today/
Wednesday.

A southwest wind 15 to 20 MPH is expected for Thursday. Breaking
waves should be 3 to 4 feet with a medium period southeast to south
swell. There is a LOW risk of rip currents Thursday.
