.SYNOPSIS...
A front over the southern Delmarva will lift north through the
area as a warm front Wednesday. Heat and humidity will once again
increase across the area Wednesday and Wednesday night. A cold front
will approach the area late Thursday then pass offshore Thursday night.
High pressure located across the western Atlantic will then dominate
the weather pattern into the weekend. A cold front may approach
from the north early next week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
A warm night is expected with uncomfortable dew points confined
to Delmarva and srn NJ. Lows in the mid/upper 60s N/W to the
low/mid 70s for metro Philly and Delmarva. Light winds expected.
Upper heights build Wednesday ahead of the next approaching trough
with temps and dewpoints once again on the increase. Highs Wednesday
will be back to the mid 90s and with the dewpoints many areas will
see heat indices upper 90s to a few degrees over 100. This will
be most pronounced in the I-95 urban areas from Wilmington through
Philadelphia and Trenton into Northern NJ where 100-105 heat indices
will be common. A heat advisory is in place for these areas and saw
no need to change its configuration as it currently captures the
area of highest apparent temperatures.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...
The main story in the short term remains the dangerously hot
conditions. Thursday should be especially hot and humid, with a
slight (emphasis on slight) relief on Friday behind the weak cold
front. For Thursday, I kept the forecast on the higher side of
guidance as I agree with the previous shift that some guidance is
too fast in bringing in the cold front given the pattern that is in
place and being well south of the higher synoptic scale lift. That
being said, I undercut a blend of guidance for dew points as I
suspect guidance is underestimating the mixing that will occur.
Even with that, I have relatively high confidence that the
coastal plains will touch if not exceed excessive heat warning
criteria. Thus, an excessive heat watch was issued for areas
mostly along and southeast of the I-95 corridor. By Friday, I
stayed close to a blend of guidance for temperatures as we
should be mostly behind the front. The main relief on Friday
will come in terms of the dew points and thus heat index values
being very close to the air temperatures. Even if we are still
not technically reaching heat advisory criteria, it will still
be dangerously hot, especially considering that min temperatures
will not likely drop below 70 degrees at night.
As far as precipitation chances, the weak cold front approaching the
region could bring additional rain changes. However, as mentioned
above, guidance is likely too fast with bringing this front into the
region, and thus a bit too wet. Thus continued the trend with
generally undercutting guidance for PoPs especially during the day
on Thursday. Most of the region should stay dry, but isolated or
scattered thunderstorm development is possible.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
A mostly zonal flow pattern is anticipated Saturday through Tuesday
with a Bermuda High located across the western Atlantic. Through
the weekend, we remain in a very hot pattern, with air
temperatures for much of the region well above 90. Chances for
showers and storms will return Sunday and especially by Monday
as the next system approaches from the north. An approaching
cold front bringing convection and increasing cloud cover in the
region should begin to provide some relief from the heat into
early next week. It remains to be seen how quickly this front
will arrive - some guidance suggests it could arrive early
enough for the relief to be felt on Monday, but if it slows down
at all, we may not see significant relief until Tuesday.
