Area forecast discussion, Jun 16, 9:24 PM EDT, 5 hours 41 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ 924 PM EDT Thu Jun 16 2022 .SYNOPSIS... A warm front will move across the area overnight, followed by a cold front on Friday. Steady northwest flow will develop over the weekend into Monday as low pressure will remain near the Canadian Maritimes and high pressure will build across the Great Lakes and into the Ohio Valley. This low will begin to weaken on Tuesday as the high pressure sags across the southeast states. A warm front could impact the area during the middle of next week, with a cold front possible by the end of the week. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY/... A sharp gradient between very unstable air and relatively stable air remained to our west this evening. It appears as though the low level stable air in our region has prevailed. The potential for any severe weather in our area has diminished. The stratocumulus that was over much of eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey and northern Delaware this evening was eroding from the southwest. We continue to expect some remnant showers and isolated thunder from the west to arrive overnight. However, as previously mentioned there is little potential for strong wind gusts and hail. A southerly wind 5 to 10 MPH is expected for tonight. Low temperatures should favor the 60s and lower 70s. Friday, warm front finally races northeast just ahead of the approaching cold front. Winds shift southwest to west and become gusty with gusts up to 30 mph expected. Temps will soar into the 90s for most. However, cold front then quickly crosses the region in the afternoon, with dew points likely dropping before we quite reach head advisory thresholds, though heat indices near 95 certainly look reasonable. As the front crosses the area in the afternoon, expect some isolated showers and storms may fire mainly south of I-95 and congeal further as the pass off the coast, but right now, it looks slow and late enough to limit the severe weather threat to marginal. && .SHORT TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/... By Friday night, low pressure moves across southeast Canada, before stalling out near the Canadian Maritimes through the weekend. Meanwhile, high pressure will build southward out of central Canada and across the Great Lakes. This will set up a steady northwest flow across the region for the weekend, which will keep the weather dry and breezy. Winds will likely gust 20-30 mph during the daytime hours Saturday and Sunday. Gusts will drop off some during the evening and overnight hours, although occasional gusts will continue during the overnight hours. Temperatures through the weekend are forecast to be 5-10 degrees below normal. && .LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/... On Monday, the low to the north remains in place, while the high to the west builds a little farther south into the Ohio Valley. Fair weather will continue through Monday, although temperatures will warm slightly a thicknesses rise. Winds will be gusty but less windy than the weekend, around 15-20 mph. The forecast for the middle to end of the week next week becomes a bit more uncertain, but potential unsettled. A warm front will develop and lift into the area around Tuesday and linger near the area through Wednesday, before a cold front moves across the area around Thursday. There will be the potential for showers and thunderstorms due to the proximity of the frontal boundaries, which will be enhanced by individual short wave/vorticity impulses. Temperatures will likely be near or below normal to start the week, before rising to near or above normal by the middle to end of the week. && .AVIATION /01Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/... The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas. Overnight...Ceilings varying between MVFR and VFR. The best chance for showers and thunderstorms at our TAF sites is from about 03Z until 07Z. Any showers and thunderstorms have the potential to lower conditions to IFR/LIFR for a time. Southerly wind 5 to 10 knots. Medium confidence. Friday...Mainly VFR with scattered clouds. West wind increasing to 10 to 15 knots with gusts of 20 to 25 knots. High confidence. Outlook... Friday night...Mostly VFR, some MVFR ceilings may develop late in the overnight. Northwest winds 5-10 knots, with gusts 15-20 knots possible. Saturday...Mostly VFR, some MVFR ceilings may linger for a few hours after daybreak. Northwest winds 10-15 knots, with gusts 20-30 knots possible. Saturday night...VFR. Northwest winds 5-10 knots, with gusts 15-20 knots at times. Sunday...VFR. Northwest winds 10-15 knots, with gusts 20-25 knots. Sunday night...VFR. Northwest winds 5-10 knots. Monday...VFR. Northwest winds 5-10 knots, with gusts 15-20 knots. Monday night...VFR. Winds become light and variable. Tuesday...Generally VFR conditions expected. Chance of showers which could occasionally lead to lower conditions. West winds 5-10 knots. && .MARINE... Overnight...Low-end SCA conditions on our ocean waters. Friday...Waves diminish to 2 to 4 feet as winds shift southwesterly, but with gusts likely topping out around 20 knots. Outlook... Friday night-Sunday...An extended period of Small Craft Advisory level winds and waves expected. Sunday night...Winds and waves expected to be below advisory levels Monday-Tuesday...VFR. Northwest winds 5-10 knots, with gusts 15-20 knots. Rip currents... A southwest wind 5-10 MPH is in the forecast for Friday morning, increasing to 10-15 MPH in the afternoon. Breaking waves are forecast to be around 2-3 feet with a medium period south to southeast swell. There is a LOW risk for rip currents along the coasts of Delaware and New Jersey on Friday. A northwest wind 15-20 MPH is forecast for Saturday. Breaking waves should be 2 to 3 feet with a medium period northwest wind wave. There is a LOW risk for rip currents along the coasts of Delaware and New Jersey on Saturday. && .TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING... Tidal departures will continue to decrease slowly overnight due to Ekman transport along our coast associated with the south wind. As a result, we are not anticipating the widespread minor flooding that occurred in our tidal areas on Tuesday evening and Wednesday evening. However, there may be some lingering spotty minor tidal flooding along the coasts of New Jersey and Delaware, along Delaware Bay and on the tidal Delaware River. It should not be impactful enough to require another Coastal Flood Advisory. Tide levels will continue to decrease over the coming days, with no additional flooding issues expected. && .PHI WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... PA...None. NJ...None. DE...None. MD...None.
