What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this heat advisory went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Philadelphia/Mount Holly wrote its last area forecast discussion before this heat advisory went out at Aug 2, 1:52 PM EDT, 30 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Aug 2, 1:52 PM EDT, 30 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ
152 PM EDT Tue Aug 2 2022

.SYNOPSIS...
A weak cold front will move through the region this afternoon
bringing the chance of isolated showers or thunderstorms.
Wednesday and Thursday look to be dry days, though the heat
returns mid week as surface high pressure builds and drives
temperatures and dew points back up on Thursday. Heat index
values near or above 100 degrees likely on Thursday. A cold
front will bring more widespread rain chances back beginning
Friday, with upper disturbances maintaining precipitation
chances through the weekend.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
A diffuse cold front will be gradually moving across the area
through this afternoon. The main effect of this will be to lower dew
points for tomorrow. In the meantime there is also some upper level
shortwave energy that will be moving through this afternoon
emanating from an upper level trough to our west. The
combination of these factors along with diurnal heating may
spark a few scattered showers and thunderstorms with the best
chances of this being over Delmarva, far southern NJ, and also
the Poconos and NW NJ. Chances of seeing any precip today in SE
PA are very low. As mentioned, any storms today will be isolated
to scattered at most but given that ML CAPEs are reaching 1000+
j/kg and DCAPEs already topping out over 1000 j/kg as well any
storms could produce locally high winds due to downbursts. This
is because the dry air in the mid levels that will help limit
convective coverage could also add to the wind threat with any
storms that do form dew to evaporational cooling of downdrafts.
It will otherwise be another hot and relatively humid afternoon
for most.

Any storms quickly diminish through the first part of this evening
with high pressure then building in overnight. NW winds on the front
side of the high will help usher in drier, lower dew point air as
well so fog does not look to be a big issue tonight despite clearing
skies and diminishing winds. Expect lows mostly in the 60s except
low 70s in the urban corridor and upper 50s over the southern
Poconos.

High pressure maintains control over the area Wednesday with mostly
sunny skies and very warm to hot conditions generally expected.
Highs will be mostly in the upper 80s to low 90s except cooler near
the coast and over the southern Poconos. In fact the prevailing flow
should be weak enough for a sea breeze to form. The good news for
Wednesday is that dew points generally won't be too high as drier
air remains over the area and diurnal mixing further helps as well.
So Heat Indices should be pretty close to the actual temperatures.

&&

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
The main feature of the short term period is the return of the
heat, if only briefly. Upper level heights will be building
rapidly on Wednesday and top out on Thursday as the trough lifts
out and the upper highs in the southwestern US and over the
southwestern Atlantic briefly connect. Warm advection with west
to southwest flow will bring 850s above 20C. Fortunately for
Wednesday, this will be in the early stages and dew points will
still be quite low (50s to low 60s), so compared to Thursday,
Wednesday will actually be relatively nice, if on the warm side,
with comfortable humidity and plenty of sunshine.

Dew points creep back up Wednesday night as southwest flow
becomes stronger, with dew points back around 70 by Thursday
morning. These dew points likely drop a little with strong
mixing on Thursday afternoon, but actual temperatures likely
rise into the mid-upper 90s, so getting heat indices into the
lower 100s won't be difficult. Thus, heat advisories look likely
Thursday. If dew points don't mix a little as expected, we could
flirt with excessive heat warning criteria, but at this point,
think this is a bit unlikely.

Storms associated with a cold front dropping in from the
northwest may start ending the heat wave late Thursday/Thursday
night, but as the storms ride into the ridge and lose the
forcing, these likely die out before reaching most of the CWA,
with the best chance of storms being in the Poconos on Thursday
aft/eve. Storms should dissipate in the evening with a dry but
very warm and humid late Thursday night.

&&

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Cold front stalls out in the area on Friday and then meanders
while gradually weakening Saturday/Sunday before another front
approaches early next week. Aloft, a trough will move into the
region Friday and while the initial energy passes east,
additional pieces of energy may work their way across the area
with the mean trough now over the area Saturday and Sunday
before the next front arrives early next week. Bottom line is
that while its still pretty uncertain just how widespread they
will be, at least isolated if not scattered showers and t-storms
look likely thru the entire long term. Best bet is definitely
with the initial cold front moving in Friday, however, when our
risk of severe weather and flash flooding looks maximized. We
will also still have a risk of heat advisory conditions, though
temperatures should be a little lower compared to Thursday.
Temps drop a bit over the weekend but start warming back up
early next week before the next front drops temps a bit towards
mid week, but it does look likely we stay below heat advisory
levels this weekend thru early next week. However, with the
front washing out, the humidity looks to remain elevated thru
the weekend into early next week, and it will help add fuel to
the storm risks. Hopefully the details end up a bit more
defined as to how stormy the weekend thru early next week truly
turns out, but right now, Sunday looks slightly less stormy
than the other days. All that said, the period definitely
doesn't look like a washout, just with intervals of inclement
weather from the isolated to scattered storms primarily during
afternoon/evening hours.

.AVIATION /18Z TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

This afternoon...Primarily VFR with a slight chance for a brief
afternoon shower/thunderstorm, mostly north and south though of the
I-95 terminals. Winds west to southwest this afternoon around 10
knots with gusts as high as 15 to 20 knots.

Tonight...VFR with NW winds 5 to 10 knots becoming 5 knots or less
overnight. High confidence.

Wednesday... VFR. North winds in the morning, becoming southwest in
the afternoon around 5 kt. High confidence.

Outlook...

Thursday... Predominantly VFR. Isolated showers and
thunderstorms in the evening mainly KABE/KRDG. Southwest winds
5-10 kt with gusts to 15 kt. Moderate confidence.

Friday... Predominantly VFR. A chance of showers and
thunderstorms mainly in the afternoon. Southwest winds around 5
kt. Moderate confidence.

Saturday... Predominantly VFR. A chance of showers and
thunderstorms. Southerly winds around 5 kt. Moderate
confidence.

&&

.MARINE...
Winds and seas are expected to remain below Small Craft
Advisory conditions through tonight, though southwesterly winds
will gust to 20 knots this afternoon over the ocean waters,
potentially stronger to 25 knots locally in showers and
thunderstorms. Seas from 2 to 3 feet.

Outlook...

Wednesday... Fair conditions. North winds 5-10 kt in the
morning, becoming southerly by the evening. Seas around 2 feet.
High confidence.

Thursday... Generally fair conditions. South to southwesterly
winds 10-15 kt with gusts to 20 kt. Seas 2-3 feet. Moderate
confidence.

Friday... Fair conditions through the afternoon with a chance
of scattered showers and thunderstorms in the evening. Southwest
winds 10-15 kt with gusts to 20 kt. Seas 3-4 feet. Moderate
confidence.

Saturday... A chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms.
Southwesterly winds in the morning becoming southerly at 10-15
kt with gusts to 20 kt. Seas 2-3 feet. Moderate confidence.

Rip currents...

For today, southerly winds 10-15 mph with wave heights only
near 2 feet will result in a LOW risk for the development of
dangerous rip currents for both the New Jersey and Delaware
Atlantic beaches.

For Wednesday, the winds are expected to be lighter and start
out variable before settling from a southeasterly direction.
Given the light enough winds and wave heights only near 2 feet,
there is a continued LOW risk for the development of dangerous
rip currents for both the New Jersey and Delaware Atlantic
beaches.
