Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ 1258 AM EDT Tue Aug 2 2022 .SYNOPSIS... A weak front moves through the region Tuesday afternoon bringing the chance of a few scattered showers. Wednesday and Thursday look to be dry days, though the heat returns mid week as surface high pressure builds and drives temperatures and dew points back up on Thursday. Heat index values near 100 degrees possible on Thursday. A cold front will bring more widespread rain chances back beginning Friday, with upper disturbances maintaining precipitation chances through the weekend. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/... A broken line of downpours and a few embedded thunderstorms have held together across Maryland this evening and are slowly working their way across the northern Chesapeake Bay as of 1 am. Added slight chance PoPs to the northern portions of Delaware and the Eastern Shore along with portions of Chester and Delaware Counties in Pennsylvania. These should gradually weaken to at least mostly showers as they traverse the bay given that there is little to no CAPE, even ML/MU CAPE over the northern portions of Delmarva. This will likely just come in the form of some welcome downpours and showers, with just some gusty winds below severe thresholds at the most. Otherwise, temperatures and dew points were adjusted to current trends. A weak ridge of high pressure will build over the area overnight. Skies are expected to be mainly clear with some high clouds. The lingering low level moisture will probably lead to patchy fog overnight. Lows will range from the mid 60s across the N/W to the low 70s for Delmarva and srn NJ. Winds will be light. On Tuesday, fair weather will be across the region as the weak ridge remains. A weak trough, or cold front, will move over the area during the afternoon. No organized precipitation is expected, but a couple scattered showers across the northern areas are possible. && .SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/... The main story for the week will be the return of the heat. Temperatures start to climb on Wednesday despite the passage of the weak boundary. Wednesday looks to be a transition day as the upper trough retrogrades and the Bermuda high noses in from the southeast with subsequent height rises. Westerly/northwesterly flow will dominate the day as surface high pressure builds over central Pennsylvania ushering in a drier airmass. Forecast soundings depict dew point depressions up to 20F with a rather deep boundary layer and steep low level lapse rates. Mid-level flow is rather weak, so winds should not be an issue, but dew points will likely mix out through the afternoon. Opted to undercut NBM values by a few degrees to account for this. While temperatures will reach the upper 80s to low 90s areawide, heat index values will remain very close to actual air temperatures. Overall, it will be a warm, but not humid, summer day with clear skies. By Thursday, the heat is on again, though indications are that this bout of heat will not be as prolonged as the last wave we had. Thursday looks to be the hottest and most humid day of the week. Surface high pressure remains overhead with strong southwesterly flow advecting in higher dew points and temperatures from the south. Guidance places 1000-850 mb thicknesses up to 1440 meters with 850 mb temperatures around the 20C mark. As with the last heat event, these values will likely translate to high temperatures in the upper 90s to near the 100 degree mark locally. Despite a deeper boundary layer in place again on Thursday, dew points are expected to hold near 70 degrees through the afternoon as the stronger southerly flow battles afternoon mixing. Thus, heat index values are expected to exceed 100 degrees in spots, and the necessity for heat headlines is looking increasingly likely. Thursday could also feature a bit of a breeze as well with low- level flow a bit stronger and the boundary layer mixing bringing down some gusts up to 15-20 mph. && .LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY/... Models are indicating a wave break occurring across the Tennessee valley as upper ridges build across the Atlantic and the southwest US. The guidance is struggling a bit with how to resolve this feature, and this will have an effect on our precipitation chances through the weekend. A surface front will approach from the west beginning early Friday morning. The GFS and GEM indicate a more progressive solution while the ECMWF is notably slower. Still, it appears that the consensus is by Friday afternoon/evening more widespread rain will envelop the area and have introduced chance to likely PoPs. Should the rain and clouds hold off, the heat will continue on Friday, though indications are a slightly more tame day as far as heat index values go. Current guidance progs heat indices near 100 in some spots, though dew points may end up lower than currently forecast ultimately bringing down the heat index values. Highs should be in the low 90s with values in the mid 80s in the Poconos. Something to monitor will be a potential hydro threat with this front as PWAT values are progged to be above average and the general synoptic pattern does not favor quick progression with deep layer flow largely paralleling the front. Guidance then is split on whether the front eventually fizzles out by the latter half of the weekend, or enough upper support is able to maintain shower chances. Opted to include mentionable PoPs through the weekend with highs right around average in the upper 80s. && .AVIATION /06Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/... he following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas. Overnight...Mainly VFR with local MVFR restrictions as some showers, perhaps some occasional embedded thunder, move across the Chesapeake Bay into portions of Delmarva. These shouldn't pose much impact to any of the terminals, but could linger long enough to lead to some light rain at ILG after 07Z. Variable wind 5 knots or less. Medium confidence. Tuesday...Mainly VFR with scattered clouds. West wind around 10 knots gusting to 15 to 20 knots. High confidence. Outlook... Wednesday... VFR. Northwest winds in the morning, becoming southwest in the afternoon at 5 kt. High confidence. Thursday... Predominantly VFR. A chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms in the evening.
