.SYNOPSIS...
A weak front will remain just south of the area today. High pressure
located across the western Atlantic will then dominate the pattern
into the weekend with prolonged southwesterly flow resulting in
oppressive heat and humidity through the weekend. A cold front
approaches the area from the northwest later Sunday, then moves
through Monday. High pressure builds in just north of the area into
Wednesday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 100 PM, the visible satellite imagery shows a mesoscale convective
vortex (MCV) continuing to straddle the Pennsylvania/New York
border, now near the Binghamton area, as it tracks eastward.
This feature looks to be gradually weakening, however it is
supporting the development of some convection. A few showers or
storms should get into our far northern areas, then another weak
disturbance should arrive late this afternoon and this evening
from the eastern Great Lakes. Given substantial boundary layer
heating and the passage of a weak boundary yesterday, surface
dew points are mixing down across much of the area. Some areas
are now experiencing dew points into the upper 50s to low 60s.
Some higher dew points remain across far southeastern New Jersey
to portions of our Delmarva zones. Cumulus have developed due
to the strong heating and just enough moisture, with these more
pronounced across the far northwestern zones and also the
coastal counties. There is a sea breeze present, and this could
help pop a stray shower or storm but this will have to battle
the deeper drier air. Tweaked the hourly temperature, dew point,
wind and sky cover grids based on the latest observations and
trends. While it will be another hot afternoon, lower dew points
will result in lower heat index values compared to yesterday.
Otherwise, broad mid-level troughing will flatten across the region
today with a weak wave associated with the upstream convection
across the southern Great Lakes arriving later this afternoon. At
the surface, a weak front will remain stalled out just south of the
area with lee side troughing developing into the afternoon just to
our west.
The main story today will be the continuing heat wave across the
region. 850 temperatures and thicknesses are quite similar to
Thursday, so maximum temperatures will likely be very similar as
well. Expecting highs from around 94-97 degrees in most inland
locations outside of the higher terrain, which should stay in the
mid to upper 80s. Fortunately for today though, the post-frontal
airmass will result in dewpoints mixing out substantially into the
low to mid 60s in many areas this afternoon. Resulting maximum heat
indices will be very close to the maximum temperatures, perhaps a
degree or two higher in spots (mainly in the mid to upper 90s). The
Heat Advisory remains in effect as previously issued, however it has
been expanded to include Ocean and southeastern Burlington Counties.
Heat Indices in these zones are expected to reach close to 100
degrees today, but especially Saturday and Sunday (more on the
Saturday and Sunday forecast in the Short Term section).
Lastly, there is another chance of some isolated showers and
thunderstorms late this afternoon and early evening, mainly along
and northwest of the I-78 corridor. As with Thursday's convection,
DCAPE will be high so any cell that are able to mature will be
capable of producing gusty winds and brief heavy rainfall. As was
also the case with Thursday, the vast majority of the area will
remain dry today though. Scattered cumulus will develop into the
afternoon.
Yet another warm night is expected tonight. Low temperatures are
expected to range from the upper 60s north of I-78 to the mid 70s
near and southeast of I-95. The immediate urban core of Philadelphia
will likely experience lows in the upper 70s. Dewpoints will rebound
into the upper 60s to low 70s resulting in muggy conditions. Some
patchy light fog may develop overnight, mainly in areas that receive
any rainfall today.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
The key weather story for the short term continues to be the
oppressive heat and humidity forecast through Sunday.
The mid-level low will continue to rotate across the southern
Hudson Bay Saturday with several pieces of PV traversing east
across southern PA Saturday. Most of the region is forecast to,
once again, remain dry as PWATs tumble to around 1.00" (or
around the 25th percentile for this time of year). 1000/ 850 MB
thicknesses are forecast to be near 1430/ 1435 m Saturday with
850 MB temperatures at 21 C. This will allow for high
temperatures in the upper 90s across most of the urban corridor
and the coastal plain of NJ, while mid 90s are forecast for the
Lehigh Valley, and upper 80s are forecast for the Poconos. Heat
index values will likely top out around 100 degrees in most
locations Saturday afternoon. Saturday night, not much in the
way of cooler temperatures are forecast with mid to upper 70s
forecast in most locations (lower 70s northwest of I-95).
Southwest of the mid-level low near the Hudson Bay will be
another potent mid-level wave diving southeast towards the Great
Lakes. This will begin to push a cold front south towards Ohio.
Ahead of the baroclinic feature, low level winds will turn from
the southwest and allow compressional warming to commence. 850
MB temperatures Sunday are forecast to rise to around 22/23
degrees C with 1000/ 850 MB thicknesses near 1440 m. This type
of thermal profile will make upper 90s to right at 100 degrees
possible for along and southeast of the Urban Corridor. Even
KMPO could reach 90 degrees Sunday. Out ahead of the cold front,
mixing will also be reduced, keeping dewpoints from falling off
much below the upper 60s. Widespread heat index values around
105 degrees appear likely Sunday afternoon across the Urban
Corridor and the Coastal Plain of NJ. An Excessive Heat Warning
might be required for portions of the CWA Sunday. Sunday night,
clouds will begin to stream across the region ahead of a weak
wave at 500 MB. This means that low temperatures will warm
Sunday night and not fall below 80 degrees across the Urban
Corridor. Even KMPO might not fall below 70 degrees.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Global models and ensembles have come into slightly better
agreement with the Monday/ Tuesday cold front, but the bias from
yesterday appears to be continuing in the ensembles. In
particular, the EPS has a weaker mid-level low over Quebec,
while the GEPS and GEFS are slightly more amplified. This has
the affect of the ECMWF stalling the cold front across central
NJ, while the GFS stalls the front across the DELMARVA. Either
way, the solution appears to favor a return of precipitation to
the region Monday afternoon into Tuesday. Continued chances of
precipitation will then persist Wednesday into Thursday, with
temperatures slightly above normal.
A potent shortwave will be diving east around the base of the
closed low over the James Bay Monday helping to push a cold
front across New England and approach the Mid-Atlantic. Showers
and thunderstorms will enter the northwestern zones Monday
afternoon and sweep southeast across PA, NJ, DE, and MD Monday
night into Tuesday morning. During the day Monday, highs will
again likely be in the lower 90s ahead of the front with heat
index values again approaching or exceeding advisory criteria.
Confidence is low here though, as a faster progression of
convection would mean lower high temperatures.
Chances of precipitation will then continue Tuesday (especially
for central PA/ NJ and south), as the cold front stalls. The
stationary front will then washout Wednesday as the next mid-
level wave approaches from the west. Precipitation chances will
then continue for Wednesday and Thursday with highs around 90
degrees.
