.SYNOPSIS...
Weak high pressure will build in over the region today and gradually
move offshore by late Friday. Low pressure will develop over the
Southeast on Friday night and rapidly strengthen as it tracks over
our area on Saturday. The strengthening low will depart into
southeast Canada by Saturday night and Sunday. High pressure then
builds into our area for Sunday through Tuesday. A weak cold frontal
passage is expected by Tuesday night.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
.Today... A area of high pressure will settle across the Middle
Atlantic today. After early morning fog dissipates, skies will be
partly sunny across the area. Lingering high clouds across most of
the southern areas will keep it from being wall to wall blue skies.
Highs will be near normal, perhaps a bit above, with low 50s for the
metro areas and upper 40s for rural areas and near the shore. Winds
will be rather light today, favoring NE or E directions.

.Tonight... Fair weather will continue tonight with the area of high
continuing over the area. Skies will be partly cloudy and
temperatures will be seasonably cool with lows in the 30s mostly
with some 20s up across NW NJ and the srn Poconos. There will be
some fog across the rural areas of Delmarva, ern PA and srn NJ.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
Weak high pressure moves off the coast on Friday. Friday continues
to look like a quiet and pleasant day with temperatures rising well
into the 50s under partly cloudy skies. Cooler at the coast with
weak onshore flow expected. Mid and high level clouds may increase
more by late in the day ahead of our next weather system.

A strong storm system will affect the region late Friday night
through Saturday night. A phasing of northern and southern stream
troughs over the Great Lakes region will spur cyclogenesis over the
Southeast on Friday night. This low is expected to rapidly intensify
as it moves northeast late Friday night and Saturday. Some rather
exceptional jet dynamics look to be in play with this system, with
indications of a coupled jet structure and two jet streak maxes in
excess of 150 to 170 kt, not something often seen. While there have
been some wobbles, models have been fairly consistent on the track
of this low, taking the center roughly right along the I-95
corridor. The low's pressure could drop to 980 mb or lower as it
moves through our region, and will likely drop to 970 mb or lower as
it moves into coastal northern New England, impressive values for
those respective latitudes.

Overall, between the track of the low and the antecedent warm
temperatures, this should mainly be a warm storm for the region. A
solid thump of warm advection driven rainfall is likely late Friday
night through Saturday morning. A widespread 0.75 to 1 inch of
liquid is forecast, and some of the guidance hints at a stripe of 1
to 2 inches. At least some nuisance hydro issues could result if
that pans out. As the storm departs, a strong cold front will move
through, and cold air could arrive fast enough for rain to change to
snow, especially if the low track is a little further east. Not
thinking snow will be much of a factor for most places, as most of
the moisture will probably be gone before a changeover can occur.
For now, have forecast just a dusting to an inch of snow for most
areas northwest of I-95. It is a little more complicated in the
Poconos; some guidance, especially the EC, keeps the low far enough
east that even much of the initial heavier precip falls as snow
there. If that occurs, more significant accumulations would be
possible. For now, have split the difference with a forecast of
about 2 to 4 inches of snow in the Poconos, suggesting the potential
for an advisory level event. But uncertainty there is fairly high,
with a strong dependency on the track of the low.

Finally, we still expect winds to be the biggest story overall with
this system. The strong winds will occur in the northwest flow as
the storm departs. With the low continuing to rapidly deepen, a very
tight pressure gradient will develop over us from late Saturday
afternoon through the overnight. Strong cold advection will result
in an unusually well-mixed boundary layer, even through the
overnight hours. A blend of NAM and GFS BUFKIT profiles suggest
mixing up to around 850 mb, where winds of 50 to 55 kt are expected
to develop. This should easily result in surface gusts of 35 to 45
kt, or about 40 to 50 mph. Think Wind Advisory conditions are quite
likely over the entire CWA, especially given it will likely be a
fairly long duration of gusts in that range. But at this point,
think we should stay below High Wind criteria. Winds should
gradually slacken off by later Saturday night as the gradient begins
to weaken. With lows dropping into the 10s and low 20s, wind chills
in the single digits are expected.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Overview...

Following the departure of Saturday's storm, a progressive,
generally zonal flow pattern sets up heading into the new week. The
result should be a quiet stretch of weather for our area. In the
wake of the storm, deep troughing will be present over the East, but
it quickly lifts out as heights rise and the flow turns more zonal.
This will mean a brief taste of winter-like temperatures on Sunday,
but a quick return to a more springlike pattern for much of the
week. We should also dry out as well, with little to no
precipitation expected for the early to middle portion of next week.

Dailies...

Sunday-Sunday night... We remain in northwest flow Sunday as the
rapidly deepening low from the day before moves further into the
Canadian maritimes. It will remain a breezy day, but the pressure
gradient slackens off quite a bit as the day progresses, so we
should only be dealing with gusts of 20 to 30 mph for the daytime.
Sunday will definitely have the feel of a winter day, as is often
the case when strong low pressure is departing the region. High
temperatures will only rise into the 30s and low 40s, with the wind
making it feel colder. Overnight lows should drop into the 20s and
low 30s, and could be a little colder if the boundary layer fully
decouples.

Monday-Wednesday... As the weekend trough pulls away, low amplitude
ridging sets up over the East by Monday and generally stays in place
through midweek. Surface high pressure will be located off the
Southeast coast, with southwest flow developing over our region by
Monday. This will bring a rapid return to warmer weather following
the brief cold air intrusion on Sunday. By Monday, most areas will
already be well back into the 50s, and by Tuesday, additional warm
advection should drive us into the upper 50s and low 60s. A weak
cold front is expected to cross the area Tuesday evening or night,
likely producing no more than a scattered shower due to limited
forcing. Cold advection behind the front is close to non-existent,
and temperatures Wednesday should cool no more than a couple of
degrees, remaining well above seasonal averages.

.AVIATION /09Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
.Today... A variety of conditions early today with fog bringing
lower VSBYS NW and low clouds lingering SE. Once the low clouds
move away, more fog may develop there pre-dawn. Slow
improvement all areas 11Z thru 13Z. Drier air will continue to
move across the area later today so VFR will continue this
afternoon. Light North to Northeast winds early today will
switch to more East or Southeast. Winds speeds will be light
however. Medium confid, mostly limited by uncertainty with how
fast conditions return back to VFR.

.Tonight...Fair weather continues. More fog may develop across
the more rural terminals. The upcoming 12Z TAFs may show this if
confid in fog increases. Light winds tonight.

Outlook...

Friday... VFR. Winds mostly light and variable through the morning,
becoming southeast around 5 kt for the afternoon. High confidence.

Friday night-Saturday night... Initially, VFR Friday night. Lowering
CIGs are expected through the night as a storm system moves in. Sub-
VFR with rain is likely from later Friday night through much of
Saturday. Rain may mix with or change to snow on Saturday mainly
from RDG and ABE westward. A return to VFR is expected by Saturday
evening and night. Light southeast winds Friday night into Saturday
morning, with LLWS possible mainly south and east of PHL. Winds will
quickly swing around to southwest then northwest towards midday and
early afternoon Saturday. Northwest winds will then become strong
for the rest of Saturday and Saturday night, with speeds of 15 to 25
kt and gusts to 40 kt. Moderate confidence.

Sunday-Sunday night... VFR. West-northwest wind shifting to west-
southwest at 10 to 15 kt with gusts to 25 kt, decreasing during the
evening and turning southwest at 5 to 10 kt overnight. Moderate
confidence.

Monday-Monday night... VFR. Southwest wind 5 to 10 kt with some 20
kt gusts possible during the afternoon. High confidence.

.MARINE...
A ridge of high pressure will build across the waters today and
remain for tonight. We'll let the ongoing SCA flag go at 6AM as
scheduled since the seas are still closer to 6 ft now, and should
continue to decrease thru the morning. Fair weather is expected
today and tonight. Winds will be rather light from the N or NE early
then E or SE later today.

Outlook...

Friday-Friday night... Sub-SCA conditions expected. Winds shifting
from northeast to southeast at 5 to 10 kt. Seas 2 to 3 ft. Rain
likely later Friday night.

Saturday-Sunday... Winds will increase and shift from southeast to
southwest to northwest through the day Saturday. As winds turn
northwest, speeds will increase to 25 to 35 kt with gusts of 40 to
45 kt. Given high confidence in this, a Gale Watch has been issued
for Saturday afternoon into Sunday morning. At least isolated storm
force gusts may be possible as well. By late Sunday morning and
afternoon, winds will turn more west then southwest and speeds will
decrease below gale levels. Seas building to 6 to 8 ft, before
decreasing Sunday afternoon and evening. Rain likely during the day
Saturday.

Sunday night-Monday night... Conditions should return to mainly sub-
SCA levels. Southwest winds gusting around 20 to 25 kt through
Sunday night, and remaining southwest at 10 to 20 kt through the
