.SYNOPSIS...
Weak high pressure will build in over the region today and
gradually move offshore by late Friday. Low pressure will
develop over the Southeast on Friday night and rapidly
strengthen as it tracks over our area on Saturday. The
strengthening low will depart into southeast Canada by Saturday
night and Sunday. High pressure then builds into our area for
Sunday through Tuesday. A weak cold frontal passage is expected
by Tuesday night.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Weak high pressure will prevail across the region through
tonight then will begin to move offshore Friday. Fair weather
will result through the period with partly to mostly sunny/clear
skies in most locations. Temperatures are expected to climb to
around 50 degrees this afternoon in most areas, then will fall
to near to a few degrees below freezing tonight. Winds will
remain light from the east to southeast then become mostly calm
overnight. A mid-level wave will pass to our south through the
remainder of the day, and any shower activity is expected to
remain south of the forecast area.
The light winds, mostly clear skies, damp ground, and
radiational cooling should result in another round of fog (and
heavy frost) in many areas tonight. It appears probable given
the temperatures near to just below freezing that freezing fog
will develop in many areas, especially rural locations across
the entire forecast area. This could result in a few slippery
spots on roads and other untreated surfaces into tomorrow
morning.
Temperatures will rebound quickly into the 50s as the day
progresses Friday with the high pressure moving offshore and
southerly return flow beginning to build ahead of the Friday
night/Saturday storm. Highs should max out in the mid to upper
50s in most areas away from the coasts and outside the higher
terrain up north and will reach near 60 degrees in Delmarva.
Fair weather will continue once the morning fog mixes out with
scattered clouds throughout the day.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
High pressure continues to move offshore Friday night. As a
positively-tilted H5 trough deepens and extends from just north
of the Great Lakes down into the Gulf Coast, surface low
pressure will develop just ahead of the base of that trough.
That low lifts north towards the Mid-Atlantic, and then tracks
along the coast during the day Saturday until it lifts into
eastern Canada by Saturday evening.
Latest 12Z GFS, the 12Z ECMWF, and the 12Z NAM has trended
slightly to the east from prior runs, and now seems to be just
east of the I-95 corridor. As a result, colder air will spread
into the local area a bit sooner, and temperatures will fall a
bit faster.
Most of the precipitation will fall as rain, at least
initially. With the colder air spilling into the far northern
zones, expecting a change to snow a bit earlier during the day
Saturday in at least the southern Poconos, far northwest New
Jersey, and the Lehigh Valley down towards Berks county. Latest
snowfall forecast is around 6 inches for Carbon and Monroe
counties, and from 2 to 3 inches for Sussex (NJ), down the
Lehigh Valley and towards Berks county. Will go ahead and issue
a Winter Storm Watch for Carbon and Monroe counties. A Winter
Weather Advisory may be needed for the rest of those counties.
For the rest of the area, mainly south and east of the Fall
Line/I-95 corridor, the primary weather type will be rain, but
there may be a brief period of some snow before tapering off.
Although just north and west of I-95 could pick up an inch or so
of accumulation, snow accumulations south of that will be
minimal. The reason for this is that it will be quite warm out
ahead of this system. Highs will be near 60 throughout the
region on Friday, and temperatures will not fall below freezing
until Saturday afternoon. So the ground will be quite warm, and
accumulations should be limited to colder surfaces, such as
parked cars and grassy surfaces. Of course, any banding of
locally heavy snow would overcome the warm ground.
During the day Saturday, about an inch of rain is expected
across the region, and may result in localized poor drainage
flooding.
Winds are another concern. As the low departs, a 45 to 55 kt
low level jet will develop over the area Saturday afternoon and
will remain in place through most of Saturday night. BUFKIT
soundings showing a decent inversion into midday or so Saturday,
and then mixing develops behind the departing low as
temperatures fall late in the day and at night. Think that
inversion will keep the strongest gusts aloft, at least into
midday Saturday. Current forecast is for 45 to 50 mph gusts from
late Saturday until after midnight Saturday night. A Wind
Advisory will likely be needed for the area.
Rain and snow ends fairly rapidly Saturday evening as the low
departs. Strong cold air advection will be underway as
temperatures plummet into the teens and 20s Saturday night. This
may result in a freeze of standing water on untreated surfaces.
Wind chills Saturday night will generally be in the single
digits, but as low as 10 below in the southern Poconos.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Overall, high pressure will dominate the Long Term period with
quiet weather and moderating temperatures.
Gusty northwest winds continue Sunday morning, though should be
below Wind Advisory criteria. Cold 1032 mb high pressure will
be centered over eastern Tennessee and western North Carolina.
850 mb temperatures will start out as low as -15C, only slowly
warming into the afternoon. Surface temperatures as a result
will be relatively cold, generally topping off in the 30s to low
40s, which is more in line with mid-January high temperatures
than mid-March. Wind chills Sunday morning will range from as
low as 10 below in the southern Poconos to otherwise in the
single digits to around 10 above. There will be plenty of
sunshine, however.
High pressure then slides off the Mid-Atlantic coast Sunday
night into Monday. Temperatures then begin to moderate from here
on out, as highs on Monday will once again climb up into the
50s throughout.
A weak frontal boundary crosses the region on Tuesday, but it
looks to be dry with little, if any, precipitation.
High pressure builds in from the north behind the frontal
boundary, but with zonal flow aloft setting up, not looking for
Canadian air to spill into the region. High temperatures will
otherwise warm well into the 60s as the week progresses.
One aspect of note is that a closed upper low looks to become
cut off over the Gulf Coast sometime Tuesday into Wednesday.
Surface low pressure develops in association with it, and looks
to run up the East Coast towards the end of the week. Some rain
may begin to lift into Delmarva and maybe extreme southeast New
Jersey by Thursday.

.AVIATION /19Z THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Through 00Z...Prevailing VFR with SCT to BKN high clouds. Some
low stratus has persisted at ACY and a mention of this was added
to the 18Z TAF. Winds becoming east to southeasterly generally
around 5 kts. High confidence.
Tonight...VFR conditions to start, but fog is expected to
develop at many of the terminals overnight, especially after
06Z. Confidence is low is the exact timing of the visibility
restrictions and with regard to how low the visibility may get,
so for now I have gone with prevailing MVFR visibility for a few
hours near daybreak Friday morning. Winds light and variable to
calm.
Friday...Prevailing VFR conditions with scattered clouds after
the morning fog mentioned above mixes out. Winds initially light
and variable will become south to southeast around 5 kts after
15Z. High confidence.
Outlook...
Friday night...VFR initially, then CIGs/VSBYs lower to MVFR or
lower late as rain moves in from the south. A rain/snow mix is
possible at KABE. SE to E winds 5 to 10 kt. LLWS possible late.
Moderate confidence.
Saturday...IFR or lower, mostly in rain, but changing to snow at
KRDG/KRDG in the afternoon. A brief period of a rain/snow mix is
possible elsewhere late in the afternoon before tapering off. SE
winds 10 to 15 kt initially will turn to the S, then W by afternoon
and will increase to 15 to 20 kt with 30 to 40 kt gusts late in the
day. LLWS possible south and east of KPHL in the morning. High
confidence overall.
Saturday night...VFR. NW winds 15 to 25 kt with 30 to 40 kt
gusts, diminishing late. High confidence.

Saturday night...Gales continue through the night. NW winds 25
to 35 kt with gusts up to 45 kt. A brief period of storm force
winds is possible as well. There is a chance for freezing spray
late.
Sunday through Sunday night...Gales will decrease to SCA
conditions through the morning, and NW winds will range from 15
to 20 kt with 25 to 30 kt gusts. Conditions will further subside
to eventually sub- SCA conditions Sunday night. Seas 5 to 7
