Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ
120 AM EST Sat Nov 12 2022
.SYNOPSIS...
The remnants of Nicole will continue to lift north of the area
overnight. A surface trough will move across the area late tonight
as a cold front moves across the area early Saturday. Steady northwest
flow will develop Sunday into Monday as high pressure builds to our
west. The high shifts to our north Tuesday, before a storm system
impacts the area late Tuesday into Wednesday.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
Secondary line of showers and embedded thunderstorms will pass
through the region through the early morning hours. Synoptic
winds continue to increase. Just off the sfc, winds are mostly
from the South at 45 to 50 kts!
This is when the gustiest winds from an area-wide standpoint
move through. Minor adjustments to PoPs/weather grids were made
with this update.
Rain will come to an abrupt end early Saturday morning, with
clearing skies for much of the area. Winds will still be gusty in
the morning out of the west, perhaps over 30 mph at times early, but
will gradually wind down through the afternoon. With downslope flow
and colder air still waiting in the wings farther upstream, it will
be another mild day with highs in the 60s to near 70, but with much
lower dewpoints, allowing for a more comfortable feel to the air
despite the gusty winds.
&&
.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
A mid-level wave will pass overnight Saturday and, along with a
surface trough, will re-introduce cloud cover and the chance for
showers for the overnight period into the early morning hours of
Sunday. Some jet dynamics could assist in synoptic-scale lift as
well, but with a good amount of dry air in place, it's certainly
possible that we only see a few tenths of an inch. SREF and GEFS
ensemble QPF means support this line of thinking, with a clustering
of members below the mean. Maintained areawide chc PoPs as guidance
hasn't changed much from the previous forecast. Expect lows Saturday
night to fall off quickly from the mild temperatures during the day,
likely into the low 40s.
Aside from the brief round of precipitation, the main story for the
short term period will be the introduction of a colder, drier
airmass in the wake of Saturday's cold front. High temperatures on
Sunday are expected to be near 20 degrees colder than Saturday
thanks to strong cold advection with a brisk northwest wind. NBM
v4.1 prob wind suggests gusts up to 25 mph possible through the day.
A widespread freeze is likely Sunday night with low temperatures
reaching the 20s in the Poconos and low 30s elsewhere. Flat upper
ridging and surface high pressure will build on Monday. With the
high placed off to our west, we'll continue the cold northwest flow
pattern, though winds will relax some compared to Sunday. Skies will
clear but temperatures won't increase much through the day, likely
not reaching out of the 40s.
&&
.LONG TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...
The long term forecast will begin dry for Monday night through
much of Tuesday as high pressure will shift to our north.
However, as we move into later in the day Tuesday, but
especially Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, an extended
period of precipitation is expected. We are expecting a double-
barreled storm system to move across the eastern portions of the
country, with one low moving across the Ohio Valley and into
the Great Lakes region, while a second low pressure will move
northward across the east coast, moving across the Mid-Atlantic
region Tuesday night into Wednesday. Precipitation could begin
as early as Tuesday afternoon as moisture lifts north of the
storm system, however, it is most likely Tuesday night into
Wednesday morning. The main question with this storm system is
whether or not there will be wintry precipitation. With high
pressure to our north, there could be enough cold air circling
down across northern New Jersey and northeast Pennsylvania for
some snow to mix in at times, even all snow for the highest
elevations which could have a light accumulation.
By Wednesday afternoon, the low pressure systems will continue
to move northward across New England, before merging into one
low Wednesday night across the Canadian Maritimes. Steady
northwest flow is expected to build across the area Wednesday
night into Thursday around the low to our north. Winds will
likely be gust at times Wednesday through Thursday, especially
Thursday when winds could gust 20-30 mph. Thursday is currently
forecast to be dry, although it would not be surprised for some
lake effect/lake enhanced showers develop across the northeast
and Mid Atlantic states. The ECMWF and Canadian are forecasting
weak to moderate low- mid level lapse rates along with some
enhanced moisture moving across the area during the day, while
the GFS is more toward the evening. Due to the uncertainty and
small likelihood, we will keep the forecast dry, but note that
there is the potential the chance could increase in the coming
day for some lake effect/enhanced showers next Thursday.
By Friday, dry weather will return to the area as high pressure
builds across the Mid Atlantic region.
