KEY MESSAGES:

- A complex system will bring a variety of hazards to the area
beginning tonight through early Sunday.

- There will be two main rounds of precip; one late tonight across
eastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin, and another Saturday
afternoon that will impact nearly all of the forecast area.

- Temperatures will fall back below normal for the second half of
the weekend into next week with the next chance of precip possible
late in the week.

A 500mb ridge will over the Upper Mississippi Valley will allow for
a return to warmer temperatures today, with highs some 10-15 degrees
warmer than yesterday. Aloft, temperatures will continue to warm
through early Saturday with WAA here and at the surface ahead of an
approaching surface low. As this system nears, a weak shortwave just
ahead of the main trough will kick off precip chances late tonight
into early Saturday. The tricky part of this portion of the forecast
remains precip type. Overnight lows will fall likely occur in the
middle of the night rather than early in the morning as WAA really
ramps up into Saturday. Lows will be somewhere around 32 degrees
roughly from Madison, MN to the Twin Cities eastward into western
Wisconsin. 850mb temps will be above freezing, setting the stage for
some mixed precip and freezing rain. Further south, temperatures
will be warm enough that an all rain scenario is most likely.
Freezing rain is most likely across western Wisconsin, where a tenth
to two tenths of a inch of ice accumulation is possible, before
temperatures warm enough for a transition to all rain. A Winter
Weather Advisory has been issued through late Saturday morning to
account for this.

After this initial wave, a second, more widespread area of precip
associated with the main trough and accompanying surface low will
move northward by Saturday afternoon. This round will bring more
hazards than the first, with everything from snow and a wintry mix
to a chance of thunderstorms across the CWA. The snow and more
wintry side of things will be across the far northwest portion of
our CWA. Temperatures here don't warm much, if at all, above
freezing as precip sets in. The highest amount of uncertainty lies
in this region with just how far northward warmer temperatures both
aloft and at the surface can make it Saturday. A period of freezing
rain to a wintry mix is likely across portions of western and central
Minnesota before more northerly flow sets in and cooler air filters
southward, changing things over to snow. Total ice accumulations of
up to a tenth of an inch with 1 to 3 inches of snow following late
Saturday afternoon into early Sunday have prompted the issuance of a
Winter Weather Advisory for this area. Again, even though this
system is practically on our doorstep, there remains uncertainty
with where this all rain vs freezing rain/snow line will set up.

Further south where temperatures are less of a concern, we have the
threat of some strong to severe thunderstorms. The highest threat of
stronger storms for our forecast area resides along the Iowa border
where favorable mid level lapse rates, shear, and moisture are
maximized. CAPE will be hardest to come by and could end up being
the limiting factor, but at least a few hundred J/kg are possible
by late in the afternoon. Some thunder is possible north of this
area where rain will be ongoing from the late morning through the
afternoon.

By late Saturday afternoon into the evening hours, temperatures will
fall rapidly from northwest to southeast with strong CAA wrapping in
with the backside of the low as it continues into the Great Lakes.
This will allow for a change over to a wintry mix and snow through
early Sunday morning. However, any snowfall accumulation will
generally be an inch or less from roughly St. Cloud southeastward.
Total QPF amounts from this system will range from around an inch
for southern Minnesota through the Twin Cities and all of western
Wisconsin, to around a half inch for the far northwestern portion
of the CWA.

From Sunday into early next week, temperatures will briefly fall
below normal into the mid 20s to low 30s with a slight warmup by
midweek. Things become less certain as we head into the second half
of the week with precip chances increasing and temperatures looking

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Saturday afternoon)

Our tricky weekend forecast has finally bled into the TAF, with most
sites continuing to remain VFR but BKN/OVC through this evening, with
CIGS lowering to MVFR overnight as precipitation arrives. Most CAMs
are highlighting precipitation ramping up between 04-06z Saturday as
the warm front lifts into the area, and there are still concerns
about p-type with FZDZ and RA the likely outcomes. TAF sites farther
north such as AXN or STC will be more likely to have FZDZ, however
even as far south as MSP could we see some brief FZDZ before temps
warm enough for all RA. Winds will be breezy today with occasional
gusts AOA 20kts at ESE. MVFR and eventually IFR/LIFR CIGS will arrive
after the first wave of precip around sunrise tomorrow, with areas
of FG possible.

KMSP...The main concerns in this TAF issuance are a few hours of LLWS
as the front arrives and the chance for -FZDZ at the terminal. Right
now, the expected outcome is a short window of FZDZ as the warm front
arrives from 09-12z, swiftly transitioning to a cold RA. Main period
of LLWS from roughly 06-09z as the front arrives.

SAT...MVFR/IFR. LIFR possible at times. Wintry mix to -RA during the
day, to -SN overnight. Wind NE 10-20kts.
SUN...MVFR/IFR with -SN early, turning VFR. Wind NW 10-15kts.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for portions of central and
southern Minnesota, and west central Wisconsin.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight.

An area of rain and freezing rain will move northward across the
area late this evening. The highest chance for ice accumulation
exists across western Wisconsin.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Saturday through Thursday.

A strong storm system will bring a variety of impactful weather
over the weekend. A wintry mix is possible early Saturday before
transitioning to mainly rain, except across western Minnesota
where a wintry mix could continue. Here, up to a tenth of an inch
of ice accumulation is possible Saturday morning before becoming
all snow in the afternoon before ending early Sunday.

The best chance for any snow accumulation will be over western
and central Minnesota Saturday and Saturday night.

There is also a chance of thunderstorms Saturday across southern
and eastern Minnesota into western Wisconsin. A couple storms
could be strong or severe near the Iowa border.
