Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Mobile AL 649 AM CDT Fri Apr 15 2022 .AVIATION... 12Z issuance...VFR conditions are anticipated across the region today. Regional satellite imagery currently reveals a low level cloud deck lingering over much of the area, but this should begin to into lift to mid to upper level clouds through the morning hours. Clouds will begin to increase in coverage again this evening and overnight as the next system approaches. Expect ceilings to become MVFR towards the end of the TAF period. Patchy fog may also reduce visibilities late tonight and into early Saturday morning especially over western portions of the area. Otherwise, northeasterly winds this morning will give way to southeasterly winds this afternoon. /14 && .PREV DISCUSSION... /issued 457 AM CDT Fri Apr 15 2022/ NEAR TERM UPDATE /Now Through Saturday/...Zonal flow aloft continues through much of the day today while a surface high pressure slides east across the Appalachians and eventually out over the western Atlantic. Northeasterly surface winds will gradually transition back to southerly as a result of the shifting high pressure and a lifting warm front. These southerly winds will allow for warm air advection and decent moisture return as model precipitable water values increase from around an inch or less this morning to 1.2 to 1.4 inches by this afternoon and evening. The best moisture return is expected over southeast Mississippi and southwest Alabama as these locations will be furthest from the high pressure. Much of the area will remain mostly dry given the influence of the high pressure and weak forcing aloft. However, a few very light rain showers can't be ruled out over southeast Mississippi and southwest Alabama this afternoon and evening. Temperatures will be warm today with highs in the lower to mid 80s. By tonight and into Saturday, upper level ridging over Mexico will begin to amplify into the central CONUS. This will cause zonal flow aloft over the area flow to become northwesterly. Additionally, this will help to split the upper level jet into two- one being over Louisiana and southern Mississippi with the second being further north over the northern portion of the Tennessee Valley and the Ohio Valley. There is upper level divergence between these jets, but the greatest values may be a bit to our north/northwest. Moisture will continue to increase through Saturday with model precipitable water values increasing to around 1.5 to 1.8 inches. Showers and thunderstorms will therefore begin to increase in coverage from north to south late Friday night and into Saturday as a cold front begins to move into the Southeast. A few thunderstorms could become strong to severe on Saturday given that nearly 35-45 knots of shear will be in place with MLCAPE values between 1500-2500 J/Kg. Additionally, the area will be within a warm air mass as southerly winds usher warm air off the Gulf waters. Although, lapse rates are somewhat meager, there is sufficient mid-level dry air that could contribute to some gusty winds and small hail in any of the stronger storms that may develop. A limiting factor, however, is the lack of a low level jet and the somewhat limited upper level support. We will continue to monitor trends as Saturday approaches. As for temperatures, lows tonight range from the lower to mid 60s. Highs Saturday warm back into the lower to mid 80s. A HIGH risk of rip currents persists through tonight and will become MODERATE through the weekend. /14 SHORT TERM /Saturday night Through Sunday night/...Northwest flow aloft will set up over the Deep South through the weekend. A subtle shortwave in the flow aloft will be departing the region to the east by Saturday night. There will likely be some residual convection that will linger into Saturday evening with chances decreasing after midnight. Conditions will remain seasonably warm and humid with some patchy fog likely late Saturday night into early Sunday morning. Low temperatures will range from the low 60s over the interior to upper 60s along the coast. A more substantial mid level shortwave in northwest flow aloft will move across the Lower Mississippi Valley Sunday afternoon through Sunday night. A frontal boundary will be stretched from the Arklatex east across northern Louisiana, central Mississippi, into central Arkansas Sunday morning, with a potential old convective outflow boundary draped across our forecast area. The airmass along and south of the front should become increasingly unstable through the day with abundant low level moisture in place and anticipated diurnal heating. Weak surface low pressure should develop along the front over the Arklatex by early Sunday afternoon and lift northeast across north Mississippi Sunday evening and into northern Alabama after midnight. As this occurs the stalled front should lift back to the north as a warm front. Scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms are likely to develop by Sunday afternoon as mid level heights begin to fall over top of the low level warm, moist airmass. In addition to falling heights, large scale ascent will also be aided by diffluent flow aloft with a split upper jet and an enhanced area of differential divergence associated with the left exit region of the subtropical jet. Storms should initially focus along the residual outflow boundary from Saturday evening storms, then develop across the entire warm sector by late afternoon as lift becomes maximized. MLCAPES should range from 1000-1500j/kg over the warm sector airmass and deep layer shear should increase to greater than 40 knots by late afternoon/evening, aided by a 50+kt mid level jet streak moving through the area. This combination of instability and shear should support organized deep convection that may produce severe wind gusts and large hail. Although there will be veering winds with height, especially in the lowest 3km, modest wind speeds through this layer may limit any tornado potential. Also, a good amount of dry air in the mid layers may support robust cold pools with any stronger convection. Although an isolated tornado cannot be completely ruled out, the primary severe weather hazards will be damaging winds and large hail. Storms should continue through Sunday night ahead of an approaching cold front from the northwest. The severe threat will likely persist into the evening but gradually wane with diminishing instability, shear, and departing large scale lift. Light onshore flow and moderate southerly swell through the weekend will keep at least a Moderate risk for Rip Currents in place through the weekend. We will need to closely monitor for a potential upgrade back to High Risk for Sunday and Sunday night as low level winds may increase ahead of the next shortwave along with increasing tidal ranges. /JLH EXTENDED TERM /Monday Through Thursday/...The front should sweep across the forecast area on Monday with diminishing rain chances from northwest to southeast. Broad mid and upper level ridging over the western Gulf of Mexico and northern Mexico will build into our forecast area by mid week behind the departing eastern trough. Dry conditions and seasonably low humidity levels can be expected with near normal temperatures through mid week. A gradual warming trend can be expected by the end of the week as upper ridging strengthens over the forecast area. /JLH MARINE...Moderate northeasterly winds will become southerly this afternoon and evening as a warm front lifts north. The southerly flow is expected to ease slightly by Saturday.
