00Z issuance...VFR conditions were reported at the TAF sites at
issuance and will prevail through Friday. Much of the cloud cover
has moved east and this will continue through this evening.
Expecting some upper level clouds to stream over the local area
during the overnight hours, with the potential for mid-level cloud
development (especially over southeast Mississippi and southwest
Alabama) by daybreak. No rain is anticipated through the period.
Northerly winds will continue to decrease this evening, being less
than 5 knots overnight for most areas. Winds will then increase
to be between 5-10 knots through Friday morning and shift to be
easterly, then turn southerly by the afternoon. /26

.PREV DISCUSSION... /issued 508 PM CDT Thu Apr 14 2022/
NEAR TERM UPDATE /Now Through Friday/...Zonal flow will setup aloft
in the wake of the upper trough across our area as the surface cold
front meanders offshore late this evening and stalls. In response to
a subtle shortwave moving through the zonal flow, the front will just
wash out over the Gulf and southerly return flow will once again
build into the area as a surface high builds over the Carolina coast.
Friday will be dry.
Lows tonight will be a little cooler than past night or two, ranging
from the upper 40s over interior northwest and low to mid 50s
elsewhere over the interior portions of MS/AL and north of I-10 in
the FL panhandle. Down along the coast lows tonight will be in the
lower 60s. With with more sunshine on Friday, temperatures will be
warmer than today, mainly ranging from the upper 70s to lower 80s
across the entire area (except for maybe a few mid 70s right along
the coast).
Persistent swell from the continued onshore flow will result in a
HIGH risk of deadly rip currents through at least Friday night. BB/03
SHORT TERM /Friday night Through Sunday night/...The upper pattern
over the Conus will see a bit of ridging over the Rockies from high
pressure centered over Mexico, with a shallow upper trough forming
over the Southeast as a series of upper systems dig south over the
northeastern Conus. Surface high pressure has moved along the East
Coast, restoring southerly flow to the Southern Plains to most of the
Florida by Friday night. Moistures levels continue to increase into
the weekend, with the better moisture return along and west of the
Mississippi River Friday night. Into Saturday, a surface low that has
formed over the Tx/Ok Panhandle moves east over the Southern Plains,
shifting the axis of the moisture return east to include the
Southeast.
By Saturday afternoon, guidance is advertising precipitable h20
levels rising into the 1.6"-1.8" range, well above seasonal values.
Upper level shortwave energy passes north of the forecast area Friday
night into Saturday, with a surface cold front sinking south to near
the I-20 corridor by Saturday night. South of the slowing front,
guidance is advertising MLCapes rising into the 1500-2000J/kg range,
with Bulk shear values of 35-40kts. Guidance is also advertising a
splitting upper level jet moving over the Southeast, with a bit of
upper level divergence adding to storm strength, mainly north of
highway 84. All in all, the forecast area may see a few strong to
marginally severe storms as scattered to numerous showers and
thunderstorms form over and near the forecast area. Highest PoPs are
expected to be over northern portions of the forecast area, closer to
the passing energy and upper divergence.
Saturday night into Sunday night, more shortwave energy passes over
the Southeast, easing the I-10 surface front a bit further south.
Guidance varies on the strength of the passing shortwave energy with
the southward movement of the front varying in its southward push as
a result. Again, south of the front, MLCapes rise into the 1500-
2000J/kg range again, with Bulk Shear values in the 35-40kt range.
Added upper support is missing on Sunday. Again, may see a few strong
to marginally severe storms, with damaging winds the primary threat.
Again, highest PoPs are over northern portions of the forecast area,
closer to the passing shortwave energy.
Low temperatures through the Short Term are expected to be well
above seasonal norms with mid 60s to near 70 closer to the coast
expected each night. High temperatures Saturday will rise to above
seasonal norms, topping out in the 77-84 degree range. Sunday will
see a bit of a downward trend, with increased cloudiness helping to
decrease daytime heating. Temperatures topping out in the upper 70s
to around 80 range.
With persistent onshore flow returning to the area this weekend,
when combined with an increasing tidal range, a High Risk of rip
currents returns to area beaches by Sunday night. /16
EXTENDED TERM /Monday Through Thursday/...With the active upper
pattern and different paths/strengths of passing shortwave energy,
temperatures are a challenge. The ECWMF is advertising a stronger
upper shortwave passing Monday night through Tuesday, with a stronger
southward push of the surface front, to over the central Gulf by
Tuesday. The result is a cooler forecast through the Extended. The
GFS' weaker upper energy leaves the front further north, with a
warmer forecast. Timing with both are in decent agreement, with the
rain moving east of the forecast area Monday night. Have blended the
temperatures for the extended, with temperatures dropping to below
seasonal norms into Tuesday night, then beginning to increase through
the latter half of the week as southerly flow returns to the
Southeast. /16 &&
MARINE...Light and variable flow tonight will become moderate to
strong northeast to easterly through Friday as a cold front stalls
and washes out over the northern Gulf. Onshore flow returns to the
marine area by Friday night, with a light to moderate southeast to
south wind then continuing through Sunday night. Another front will
move over and south of area waters early next week, bringing moderate
to strong offshore winds and building seas, and likely the next SCA
