00Z issuance...General VFR conditions were noted across the
forecast area at 23z, with the exception being low to mid MVFR
CIGs over portions of the western Florida panhandle, near
scattered showers and thunderstorms. This convection will continue
to move off to the east, with VFR conditions expected area wide
by 02z. Southerly winds 5 to 10 knots will shift to northwesterly
around 10 knots overnight as a cold front poised to move across
inland southeast Mississippi at this time moves east across the
area.

.PREV DISCUSSION... /issued 443 PM CDT Fri Mar 18 2022/

NEAR TERM UPDATE /Now Through Saturday/...The severe weather
threat has ended across the entire area as the remaining portion
of Tornado Watch #51 across the western Florida Panhandle was
allowed to expire at 4 PM. A few light showers along the coastal
portions of the western Florida Panhandle will occur late this
afternoon and again Saturday morning behind a cold front. In the
wake of the front, surface high pressure will build in from the
west ushering in a dry airmass that will persist through Saturday.
In the meantime, there remains two hazards along the Alabama and
Florida coast, with a High Surface Advisory in effect until 1 AM
Saturday and a High Risk of rip currents through the near term
until the swells decrease. Low temperatures tonight behind the
cold front will drop to between 45 to 50 degrees along and
northwest of I-65, and between 50 to 55 degrees to the southwest.
High temperatures on Saturday will rebound to between 66 and 71
degrees under sunny to mostly sunny skies. /22

SHORT TERM /Saturday night Through Monday night/...Dry conditions
expected through the period, with the exception of light showers
returning late Monday night across SE MS ahead of the next major
storm system. There will be an upper shortwave approaching the
region from the west late Saturday afternoon that will pass over
the forecast area Saturday night, but the atmosphere will be too
dry (PWATS < 0.5 inch) for any precipitation to develop. The
shortwave continues to exit the region late Saturday night with
ridging beginning to build into the area from the west through the
remainder of the weekend. Surface high pressure also continues to
build in from the west Saturday night, and slides northeast into
the Appalachians by Sunday night. This will result in generally
light north-northwesterly surface winds on Saturday night
gradually becoming easterly by the end of the period.

As for temps, with clear skies and light north-northwest winds
Saturday night, lows will be a bit on the cool side in the wake of
the cold front with temps ranging from near 40 northwest of I-65,
to the mid 40s southeast. As ridging grabs hold of the area on
Sunday, highs climb into the low to mid 70s across the area under
mainly clear skies. Lows Monday night warm up a tad with mainly
mid 40s expected across inland areas, and upper 40s to low 50s
along the coast. Lastly, a Moderate risk of rip currents expected
Saturday night, becoming low by Sunday. /22

EXTENDED TERM /Tuesday Through Friday/...A massive upper
longwave trough over all of central North America Monday night
will gradually shift eastward through the extended. A 100 to 120
knot 300mb jet stream diving southward over the Inter-mountain
West will carve out a strong upper level closed low pressure
system within the longwave trough over the southern plains by
Monday evening, and then lift northeast to the Great Lakes through
the remainder of the period. A southerly low level wind flow will
remain across the region along the western periphery of a surface
ridge to our east, bringing a gradual increase in moisture and
clouds.

A 70-90 knot 500mb jet max rounding the base of the southern
plains upper closed low pressure system will strengthen to 90 to
110 knots as it reaches the Mississippi River by Wednesday
morning. This will put the forecast area in the favorable right
entrance region of the upper jet, promoting enhanced dynamic
lifting in the mid to upper levels during this time frame. An
upper level diffluent pattern will also reside over the region. At
the surface, an area of low pressure is expected to develop over
Oklahoma by Tuesday morning, and lift northeast toward the lower
Great Lakes. This will put the forecast area in the warm sector,
and a low level jet will also accompany this system with 850mb
winds between 55 and 70 knots across and just west of the forecast
area on Tuesday. In addition, upper level impulses will also
traverse the forecast area Tuesday, allowing for numerous showers
and thunderstorms to develop by late Tuesday afternoon.

We are monitoring this next system closely as the severe weather
threat is trending upward with each model run, and has the
potential to bring a line of strong to severe thunderstorms
through the region Tuesday and possible through midweek. There
are some timing differences that need to be resolved, but the bulk
of the line is still expected to pass through the forecast area
Tuesday and Tuesday night. The near storm environment is looking
increasingly likely to support the development of strong to severe
thunderstorms with damaging winds and a few tornadoes. MLCape
values have increased to between 1200 and 1600 J/KG, concurrent
with SFC-1KM SRH values between 200 to 300 M2/S2. Heavy rainfall
is also expected with this system. In addition, a more elevated
rip current risk is expected with this system. /22

MARINE...A Small Craft Advisory remains in effect for much of the
marine area through Saturday morning given strong southwesterly
flow shifting northwesterly tonight into Saturday morning behind a
cold front, followed by mainly a moderate offshore flow continuing
into Sunday morning. SCEC criteria will occur at times out over
the open Gulf waters. Early next week, a moderate to strong
easterly to southeasterly flow sets up in advance of the next
weather system that will be moving toward the marine area from the
west with SCA conditions likely returning Monday night into
Tuesday. /22

At 1255 PM CDT, National Weather Service doppler radar indicated a
strong thunderstorm over Tanner Williams, or 13 miles west of Midtown
Mobile, moving east at 35 mph.

HAZARD...Winds in excess of 40 mph and nickel size hail.

IMPACT...Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around
