The Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until midnight and
this seems reasonable. There are light returns on radar and a few
sites are reporting freezing drizzle while others are reporting
reduced visibility with fog- these could have freezing drizzle or
fog and the sensor may not be able to tell the difference
depending on the sophistication of the site. It seems like the
freezing drizzle may be peaking across southeast WI right now,
based on radar. This is about one hour later than expected, but
the front that is approaching from MN/IA also seems delayed a bit.

The best omega is occurring right now and is expected to shift out
of the area by midnight. Once the stronger lift it out, we should
see a period of just fog (visibility down to a mile in some
places), and then the arctic front will arrive after midnight
with gusty northwest winds. A period of flurries is possible along
the front.

.SHORT TERM...

This Afternoon through Sunday Night:

Strong south winds today continue to carry deeper low level
moisture rapidly northward. This deepening moisture will extend to
around 5K feet, with a dry layer holding on in the 5-10K foot
layer through the evening. The expected dry layer is preventing
any significant ice from falling into the cloud-bearing layer,
however enough the cloud layer must be extending to around -8
to -10C as getting a few reports of very light snow. In
addition, increasing low level convergence and a passing weak
short wave will add some weak synoptic lift, which will result in
patchy very light precipitation through this evening. With the
lack of any significant ice, expect more patchy drizzle/mist/light
fog to occur but wl include some patchy light snow for a time late
this afternoon. Temperatures will remain below freezing. Pavement
temperatures at KMKE remain in the mid to upper 20s as well. The
light mist/freezing drizzle has produced some icy conditions
upstream across eastern IA this afternoon and will likely cause
some slick spots on untreated roads, walks and more susceptible
areas over southeast WI. Almost all of the EPS and GEFS ensemble
members show a trace to 0.02" QPF across southeast WI this
evening, confirmed by GEFS plumes as well. NBM 50th-75th Icing
potential showers up to 0.06" glazing over southeast half of CWA
tonight. Enough confidence to pull trigger on a Winter Weather
Advisory for portions of southeast WI, but confined the advisory
to those areas that have the best chance of receiving a couple
hundredths of an inch of QPF and a light glaze, mainly the
southeast and parts of south central.

The light precipitation will end later tonight after an Arctic
cold front sweeps through. Blustery northwest winds to 30 mph are
expected late tonight into Sunday morning as temperatures tumble.
925H temps will tumble to 15 to 20C on Sunday. A weak period of
isentropic lift moving along a low level thermal boundary may
bring a period of clouds and possibly -sn to portions of southern
WI later Sunday night. However the trend has been weaker and
farther south with this weak lift. Hence kept POPS low for this
period. Also, the clouds will hold temps up, preventing Wind
Chills from falling into Wind Chill Advisory criteria for now.
Coldest wind chills of 10 to 15 below zero are expected over
northern CWA later Sunday night into Monday morning where more
clearing and less of a chance of -sn is expected.

.LONG TERM...

Monday through Saturday:

Slight chances for snow in the vicinity of a weak sfc trough and
nose of a 300mb jet should exit southeast during the post- dawn
hours on Monday. In its wake, the remnant pressure gradient will
allow breezy northwest winds to linger for much of the day. This
will help advect frigid air through southern Wisconsin from the
arctic air mass centered over the northern plains. Daytime highs
are anticipated to be in the mid to upper single digits with wind
chills dipping down into the negative single digits near the WI/IL
border and to the negative teens toward central and east-central
WI.

Overnight Monday, the center of the arctic air mass will shift
overhead, as sfc high pressure will moves southeast down the
Mississippi River Valley and into northern IL. While winds will
die down some, overnight temperatures will drop into the low
single digits beneath clear skies. Wind chills will stay
relatively the same overnight as during the daytime, although a
few spots in Green Lake, Fond du Lac, and Sheboygan County will
see chills drop closer to -20 as some marginally higher winds
linger there overnight.

Tuesday, winds will turn southerly and increase as the high
departs eastward. WAA on the southerly winds will allow our highs
to rebound into the mid to upper 20s. Clouds will increase through
the day as a shortwave passes to our north. A weak sfc trough will
pass overhead Tuesday night, but no precipitation is expected.

Beyond, we look to stay in the doldrums at least through Wednesday
and Thursday as a large trough amplifies over the eastern US,
backing up the upper level pattern some. We'll stay relatively

Friday looks to be our next best chance at precipitation, but this
is in question due to the potential for 2 phasing systems...a low
just north of Lake Superior and a low moving through the southern
Plains. The ECMWF favors a solution where the systems phase east
of Wisconsin keeping us dry, and the GFS favors early phasing of
the 2 systems and light snow for our southeast Friday night. We'll
continue to watch this going forward.

Ceilings are sitting at LIFR less than 500 at most locations and
visibilities are between 2 and 4SM. Patchy freezing drizzle is
affecting portions of southern WI, especially areas southeast of a
line from Janesville to Milwaukee. However, Madison has been
reporting FZDZ for some time now. There should be a lull between
the FZDZ and the arctic front arrival. In that lull, just fog
(down to a mile at times) is expected. Gusty northwest winds will
arrive after midnight through early morning from west to east. A
period of flurries is possible along the front. MVFR ceilings may
linger into Sunday morning a bit and then clear skies are
expected for much of the day.

Southerly winds will become west-northwest late tonight with the
arrival of an arctic front. Gusty northwest winds will approach
gale strength behind the front over the Open Waters, especially in
the central and southern portions. Confidence is lower about the
need for a Gale Warning midday Sunday. Freezing Spray may also
become heavy for a time over parts of the northern Open Waters
Sunday into Sunday night.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for portions of east central
Wisconsin, south central Wisconsin and southeast Wisconsin.

.DAY ONE...Late This Afternoon and Tonight

A period of light freezing drizzle is expected through this
evening over portions of south central and southeast Wisconsin.
This will result in a light glaze of less than one tenth of an
inch. The light glazing will result in slippery spots developing
on untreated roads and walks. Hence a Winter Weather Advisory has
been posted through this evening for the area along and south of a
line from Port Washington to Madison to Lone Rock.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Sunday through Saturday

Bitterly cold wind chills of 10 to 20 below will be possible
later Sunday night into Monday and again Monday night into
Tuesday.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for the open waters of Lake
Michigan.

.DAY ONE...Late This Afternoon and Tonight

A Gale Warning remains in effect until 6 pm across the southern
Lake Michigan open waters and until 9 pm across the northern open
waters. Occasional gusts up to 40 to 45 knots are expected over
the northern open waters into the early evening.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Sunday through Saturday

Northwest gusts will approach Gale levels on Sunday. A few gusts
to 35 knots will be possible, especially over the central and
southern Open Waters.

There is a potential for moderate to heavy freezing spray Sunday
night into Monday, especially across the northern Lake Michigan
open waters.

Southerly gales may return Tuesday night.
