* WHAT...Dangerous rip currents.

* WHERE...Beaches from Cape Hatteras North.

* WHEN...Through this evening.

* IMPACTS...Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away 
  from shore into deeper water.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...The most likely time for strong rip
  currents to occur is a couple hours either side of low tide,
  which will occur around 1200 PM Friday.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Life-threatening rip currents. If caught in a rip current, remain
calm. Swim in a direction following the shoreline. If tired,
float or tread water until out of the rip current. If unable to
escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.

  in low- lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways.

* WHERE...Areas along Bogue Banks beaches, Bogue Sound, the 
  Newport and White Oak Rivers, and adjacent tidal creeks.

* WHEN...Until 8 PM EDT Tuesday.

* IMPACTS...Up to 2 to 3 feet of inundation above ground level is
  possible in some areas near shorelines and tidal waterways 
  resulting in an elevated threat of property damage. Flooding 
  will extend inland from the waterfront threatening some homes 
  and businesses. Numerous road closures and flooding of vehicles 
  will be possible.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Strong King Tide cycle in combination with
  southerly winds will lead to increased water levels lasting into
  early next week. Water levels will rise through the upcoming
  high tide cycles, peaking Monday night and Tuesday night before

Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure will drift south west away from the area through
tonight. A surface trough extending from the low to the south
will extend north into the area Friday into the first half of
the weekend. Drier and warmer weather with only isolated showers
or storms are expected Sunday through early next week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY/...
As of 715 PM Thu... No real significant changes to the forecast
on this update. Low clouds continue to persist across the CWA
with widely scattered showers noted as well. Winds continue to
remain out of the NE but are forecast to gradually turn to more
of an easterly direction by Fri morning. Cut- off low continues
to slowly meander off the southeastern coast of the CONUS this
evening with several low- level circulations pivoting westward
across the waters and onshore. The previous breaks in the clouds
have begun to fill back in and although fog has briefly lifted
this evening, it is forecast to return off the cooler Labrador
current within the next hour or two to the OBX and surrounding

The disorganized area of low pressure is expected to continue
sinking southwest and filling in as it does so, leaving a
surface trough offshore overnight. The HREF and most CAMs do
show an increase in shower activity overnight with this boundary
and weak low-level WAA. Kept high-end chance PoPs in the
forecast for tonight with a slight chance of thunder along
immediate coastal locales south of Hatteras. Kept overnight lows
in the 60s tonight across the CWA given the low cloud cover and
and slight WAA across the region.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH 6 AM FRIDAY/...
As of 350 PM Fri...Upper low will begrudgingly lift back north
on Friday as vigorous cyclone over the Northern Plains lifts
into the Canadian Prairies in the morning and attempts to absorb
the low into the mean flow. While the upper low shifts north,
southerly flow will allow for increasing moisture advection with
PWATs surging north of 1.5" by Fri afternoon. CAM guidance
shows shower and thunderstorm activity blossoming on the west
side of a N-S oriented warm front in the afternoon. Warmer
temperatures in the mid to upper 70s, coupled with increasing
Tds well into the 60s, point to more available instability but
very weak shear suggests little in the way of a severe threat.
The most robust storms could be efficient rainmakers with tall
skinny CAPE profiles, and would not be surprised to see pockets
of QPF between 1-2" especially west of Highway 17.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 345 AM Wednesday...General troughing over SE CONUS lifts
N putting the FA into a wetter pattern through the weekend.
Multiple cold fronts cross the region early to middle of next
week.

Late Weekend...Precip becomes more diurnal in nature, more akin
to summer-time precip set ups, and lessens through the weekend
as the low aloft departs to the N. Temps continue to warm, Highs
in the lower 80s Sat, mid to upper 80s Sun lows in the low to
mid 60s.

Early Next Week...A series of primary and reinforcing cold fronts
impact the FA early next work week. Monday a cold front
approaches the region from the NW but loses momentum before
reaching the FA, washing out as it crosses the area overnight.
Tuesday, a backdoor front drops through the FA overnight with
the Nerly surge following during the day Wednesday. With WAA
ahead of the front Monday, warming trend continues with highs in
the upper 80s, warmest in the SW. Will continue carrying SChc
to Chc diurnal showers/thunder through the early week. Have
trended on the cooler side of guidance for highs Wed in the
Nerly surge behind the front.

.AVIATION /00Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
SHORT TERM /Tonight and Friday/...
As of 715 PM Thu... Widespread MVFR ceilings currently persist
across the CWA with IFR ceilings noted along the Outer Banks and
coastal locations where some lower clouds and patchy fog have
mixed in as cool northeasterly onshore flow impacts the CWA.
Guidance in good agreement we once again return to IFR across
all the TAF sites tonight, expanding from the Albemarle
Peninsula southwestwards covering all TAF sites by about 04Z.
There is a risk of LIFR cigs developing after 05-06z that could
fall below airfield minimums, but confidence in this is lower
than average. Cigs return to MVFR on Fri morning, around 16-17z
with a potential return to VFR across the coastal location by
18-19z particularly along the coastal sites such as OAJ and EWN
with VFR forecast to return further inland by about 20-23z.
5-15 knot NE'erly winds will slowly veer on Friday to more of an
easterly direction

LONG TERM /Friday night through Monday/...
As of 415 AM Thursday...Breezy Eerly winds early Friday become
more Serly as weakening Low to the S leads to overall troughing
for ECONUS. SubVFR CIGs improve through the day Fri, reaching
VFR late afternoon/early evening. At least occasional flight
restrictions due to decreased VIS will be possible Fri into
Saturday as the aforementioned trough and low aloft lift N
bringing periods of showers and embedded tstorms through the
early weekend. Early morning patchy fog cannot be ruled out for
regional terminals with added SFC moisture from rainfall and
winds calming through the overnight. Conditions begin improving
again Sunday once the low aloft and SFC trough push N of the FA.

.MARINE...
SHORT TERM /Tonight and Friday/...
As of 400 PM Thu...Conditions continue to slowly improve over
the waters as northeasterly flow eases behind a weakening low
shifting southwestward towards the SC coast. Main changes to
this forecast was to allow all inland water SCAs to expire,
although a few gusts to 20 kt or so remain probable for the
remainder of the afternoon. For coastal zones, seas of 6-7 feet
require a continuance of SCAs for all zones. Easing winds will
allow seas to drop below 6 feet for northern and southern waters
overnight, but SCA conditions will linger well into Sat with
southerly winds of 15-20 kt with higher gusts over the Gulf
Stream keeping seas around 5-6 ft for outer central waters.

LONG TERM /Friday night through Monday/...
As of 420 AM Thursday...Conditions improve but still less than
pleasant through the first half of the weekend with the region
entering a wetter pattern which will keep shower/tstorm activity
elevated. More manageable conditions arrive late week, 10 to
15kt Eerly winds become more Serly through the day Fri with
4-5ft persisting through the weekend. 6ft seas linger over
outer waters south of Oregon Inlet, longest for central waters-
into Sat evening. Best conditions in period Sunday with
S/Seerly winds 10-15kt, 3-4ft seas, and decreasing precip
chances. SWerly winds increase to 15-20kt and seas build back to
4-5ft Monday ahead of an approaching cold front.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
As of 415 PM Thu...***The Coastal Flood Advisories for existing
zones have been extended until 8 AM tomorrow morning to capture
the potential for minor inundation concerns with the Fri morning
high tide cycle.***

Low pressure will continue to drift southwest away from NC
through tonight with winds further diminishing and veering
easterly overnight. The diminishing winds will eventually
result in lower water levels and a diminished threat for coastal
flooding. High surf will remain a concern, mainly north of Cape
Hatteras, with seas of 6 to 9 feet still possible in the surf
zone through this evening. Strong rip currents will continue
for much of the Outer Banks north of Cape Lookout tomorrow.
Please see the Dare County DOT for the status and conditions of
Highway 12.

Although winds are decreasing, high waters levels along the
southern Pamlico Sound basin will likely persist into Fri
morning aided by the flow veering to East. Thus inundation of
up to a foot above ground will be possible along the southern
Pamlico and Core Sounds and lower Neuse River basins into
tomorrow morning.
