Hurricane Ian is forecast to come ashore along the southwest coast
of Florida as a Major Hurricane today. Ahead of landfall, and as Ian
moves into the western portion of the state, bands of heavy rain
will move from south to north across South Florida. High rain rates
and the training nature of the storms could pose a flash flooding
risk, especially across the urban corridors of each coast. Rough
radar estimates since Monday paint a large area of 4 to 6 inches of
rain across most of South Florida, with isolated higher amounts.
Additional rainfall amounts through at least tonight will be on the
order of 2 to 4 inches with isolated amounts up to 8 inches. For
this reason, much of the region continues to be under a Moderate
Risk for excessive rainfall, with a High Risk across portions of
Collier, Glades, and Hendry, closer to where Ian will make landfall.
The continued eastward nudging of the track forecast has increased
confidence in tropical storm force winds in gusts along the east
coast (already realized in most places), and sustained at times
across the western portions of south Florida. It has also heightened
the chances for experiencing hurricane force gusts today across
Collier, Glades, and Hendry counties. Potential peak surge values
have increased a bit down the southwest coast, with points along
Collier county having the potential to peak at 10 ft, with 7 ft peak
surge values along Mainland Monroe. Important to remember is that
these values are only forecast to be possible somewhere in these
areas and are not expected amounts across the entire coast. Most
locations will not experience these peak amounts. Minor coastal
flooding remains possible along the east coast during periods of
high tide, but life threatening surge is not forecast along our
Atlantic coast. Finally, several tornadoes occurred overnight across
south Florida and that threat will continue through the day today.
It's possible that as flow becomes a little more unidirectional
later today, the tornado threat could diminish, but for now
tornadoes should be considered a possibility through the day.
While it will still be breezy on Thursday, rainfall is expected to
become more scattered in nature as dry air wraps around the back
side of Ian. The flooding, damaging wind, and tornado threat should
come to an end by Thursday morning.

.LONG TERM...
(Thursday night through Tuesday)

Hurricane Ian is expected to weaken into a Tropical Storm and
eventually a Tropical Depression as it moves northwards out of our
area Thursday and Thursday night to begin the long term period. The
threat for Tropical Storm force winds will end with this, but
winds will stay breezy to gusty still on Friday as most areas
should see 20-30mph gusts. A much drier air mass will then take
over the area beginning on Friday which is expected to keep us
very dry through the weekend. In addition, an elongated upper
level ridge at the jet stream level and a mainly zonal flow
pattern in the mid levels will mean there is a lack of a
synoptically driven lifting mechanism. PWATS are also expected to
drop below 1.5 inches and could fall to near just inch early next
week.
With this drier pattern setting up, rain shower activity will be
extremely limited not only this weekend but into next week as well.
Any brief shower activity would likely be caused by mesoscale
boundaries, but even then much of that potential will be suppressed
by the lower moisture content and lack of synoptic forcing.
Therefore, expect predominantly dry conditions through the long term
period with temperatures in the mid to upper 80s for highs.

As Hurricane Ian continues to approach the SW Florida coast, bands
of rain and scattered storms will continue throughout the day.
Winds and gusts will continue to increase area wide as the day
progresses. Later tonight, the chances of showers and storms will
gradually decrease as Ian begins to pull away from the north.
Periods of IFR will continue in and around showers and
thunderstorms.

through Thursday night as Hurricane Ian moves slowly northward in
the Gulf of Mexico. Conditions across the Atlantic and Gulf waters
