A low cloud deck has eclipsed the region, thus leading to a
dreary-feeling start to the day. These clouds are progged to hang
around for much of the day, although a few breaks in the clouds
will be possible this afternoon as some warming and increased
winds aid in mixing. The current forecast package is in good shape
and no updates are planned.

.SHORT TERM...
(Today through Friday night)

Low pressure is in the northeast gulf this morning while a 1042MB
ridge extends from southern Canada into the plains. Upper lvl
moisture is streaming across TX ahead of a weak upper disturbance
that is over Baja.

A few peaks of sun occurred this past afternoon and a few holes
in the cloud cover continues behind the departing gulf low,
however higher clouds are beginning to thicken across the local
region. A few locations may get to see the sun early today,
however cloudy skies will prevail for the majority of the day as
moisture streams across the northern gulf coast. No precip is
expected. A chilly ridge of high pressure will gradually slide
east across the eastern Conus today which will allow winds to
shift onshore this afternoon or tonight. As this first ridge
shifts east today, a stronger +1060MB high is expected to drop
out of Canada into Montana.

After a cool start to Thursday temperatures are forecast to climb
into the 60s at most locations, however these near normal
temperatures will quickly disappear during the afternoon. The
leading edge of the Arctic airmass will sweep in during the
afternoon or early evening with a quick 20-30 degree drop behind
the boundary. A few showers will be possible as the boundary moves
through, however a few lingering showers may occur post frontal.
At the current time it appears the quickly drying air mass will
keep frozen precip out of the forecast, however if precip does
linger for a couple extra hours a novelty sleet pellet or snow
flake may be possible.

Strong winds and very cold temperatures in the teens and low 20s
will combine to to produce wind chills of around 0 to near 10
degrees Friday morning. A wind chill adv will be issued shortly.
Meeting the criteria of a wind chill warning (below 0F) may be
even met at a few locations from the East TX Lake through Cen LA.
Temperatures will struggle to reach freezing Friday before falling
back into the teens and low 20s Friday night.

.LONG TERM...
(Saturday through Wednesday)

The arctic air mass is expected to have settled into the forecast
area as the long term forecast period begins and with it a bitterly
cold conditions for the Christmas Holiday weekend.

On Saturday morning, hard freeze warning and wind chill advisory
conditions will likely be on going. Hard freeze warning conditions
will also likely take place on Christmas Eve night into Christmas
morning.

As far as forecasting air temperatures go, stuck close to
deterministic national blend of models as these values have been
pretty consistent over the past few runs with whisker boxes between
the 75th-25th percentile narrowing to about 4F to 5F degree
difference and not too far off from the mean. Even the 90th
percentile values or the reasonably "warmest" the temperature would
be during the morning time frames are at hard freeze values (25F
degrees or below,) for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day mornings. So
there continues to be increasing confidence in a hard freeze on
those days.

As far as precipitation, overall the air mass, as with a typical
polar air mass will be on the dry side during the weekend. The
21/00Z operational GFS is bringing down a rather strong short wave,
a clipper type system, on Christmas Day in the deep northwest flow.
However, the remaining guidance is not showing this. Even if this
short wave does pan out, most likely will just be a mid level cloud
deck with some virga at best. Even if the precipitation could make
it the surface it will be entering the forecast area when surface
temperatures are above freezing. So will not mention any pop in the
forecast for Christmas.

Residents should plan on taking precautions to protect pipes,
plants, pets, and people from the dangerous cold over the Christmas
Holiday.

Air mass will begin to modify during Monday. Another short wave will
drop down late Monday and may produce a few showers over the coastal
waters up into coastal locations.

The high pressure system will be off to the east early next week
allowing for warming temperatures by the end of the period.

The low cloud ceiling has hung around across all terminals for
much of the day and it is progged to prevail. The only
opportunity for broken ceilings this afternoon would be BPT and
LCH as satellite imagery shows some broken skies to the southwest,
moving northeast. Otherwise, IFR/LIFR ceilings can be expected
for the remainder of the forecast period. Model guidance is
hanging onto the idea of ground fog across the area after 06Z
tomorrow, and considering the low cloud deck, it is possible.
Thus, some lowered VIS was penciled into the end of the package at
all terminals.
