Issued at 330 PM CST Tue Feb 15 2022 Strong south winds will keep temperatures on the mild side overnight, rising into the 40s in most of central Illinois, before reaching the 50s on Wednesday. Wind gusts of 35 to 45 mph are likely Wednesday ahead of a strong winter storm, which will bring widespread precipitation to the region. A changeover from rain to a wintry mix will take place late Wednesday night through Thursday, though the rain may be heavy before this occurs. && .UPDATE... Issued at 900 PM CST Tue Feb 15 2022 Updated the forecast for mid/high clouds moving in quicker this evening as skies become mostly cloudy. Also some adjustments to the temperatures as temperatures already beginning to rise past few hours with breezy SSE winds gusting 20 to 30 mph and increasing clouds. Lows have already been reached in the upper 30s ne CWA and mid 40s sw CWA. Temps were up to 50F at Springfield and Jacksonville and 54 in Pittsfield, and up to around 40F in east central IL. Temps will generally be in the lower 40s to mid 40s over CWA overnight, mildest SW CWA. Breezy SSE winds due to strong 1043 mb high pressure off the southern New England coast and 998 mb low pressure in sw KS which track ne to along the eastern KS/NE border by dawn Wed keeping a tight pressure gradient over IL and even stronger south to SSW winds on Wed. && .SHORT TERM...(This evening through Wednesday) ISSUED AT 330 PM CST Tue Feb 15 2022 Our winter storm system is currently getting organized over California, with a closed upper low dropping southeast. The surge of warmer air has begun over the forecast area this afternoon, with winds starting to gust over 25 mph. Temperatures have reached the lower 50s south of I-70 and in the 40s most other areas. Initial forecast concern will be with the winds on Wednesday. Strong low level jet, over 60 knots on the high-res models, will develop this evening and persist over eastern Illinois into Wednesday, with forecast soundings keeping 40+ knots through the afternoon. Cloud cover and any lingering snow pack would cut down the potential a bit for mixing that down, but this morning's snow analysis has the area near/south of I-70 snow-free and anything north of there stands a good chance of melting tonight. Will be issuing a Wind Advisory for Wednesday from Paris-Effingham southward with gusts potentially up to 45 mph. On the precipitation side of the house, synoptic models are in good agreement with the large-scale features of this storm system, keeping the cold front northwest of the forecast area through the afternoon. Showers will develop during the afternoon hours, with most of them staying west of I-55. .LONG TERM...(Wednesday night through Tuesday) ISSUED AT 330 PM CST Tue Feb 15 2022 Wednesday night through Thursday evening: Rain becomes widespread during the evening as the front moves in, remaining more scattered south of I-70 until after midnight. By that point, the front should be near the Illinois River, reaching I-70 toward sunrise. With the strong dynamics, a mention of isolated thunder has been added as far north as Bloomington and Rushville. The changeover to mixed precip has been slowed a tad, but should be in the Peoria area in time for the morning rush, and near I-55 by mid morning Thursday. Eastern Illinois should hold off on any switching until midday or early afternoon, while the southeast largely stays as rain during the event. The heaviest snow axis on the NAM/GFS favors the northwest third of Illinois, while the European model is more across the central third. The switchover remains the most uncertain element of this forecast, as there remains a prominent warm nose around 900-850 mb that persists into the afternoon. Model soundings continue to suggest a transition from freezing rain to sleet as the cold air depth increases from the northwest, before finally switching to snow. A Winter Storm Watch has been issued with this potential, with the combination of precip types, beginning midnight Wednesday night and around sunrise Thursday further east. Regarding the precipitation quantity, morning model runs have been favoring the heaviest axis just north of I-70, upwards of 2.5 inches. No changes to the Flood Watch have been made at this time. Friday through Tuesday: Most of the longer range forecast thankfully remains quiet, with a pair of Alberta Clippers passing to our north this weekend. As we get into early next week, another storm system looks to get going in the Monday/Tuesday time frame. Long-range guidance keeps us on the warm side of the storm, with rain in the forecast Monday night and Tuesday. With fresh snow cover over the northwest CWA, temperatures are likely to fall to near zero Thursday night, but the cold weather does not last long. By the end of the weekend, current indications support 50s over our area. && .AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Wednesday night) Issued at 1155 PM CST Tue Feb 15 2022 LLWS to continue through 18Z/noon across central IL airports with 2k ft SSW winds 50-60 kts (even near 65 kts at BMI) and returning se of the IL river Wed evening. South winds have increased to 14-20 kts with gusts 25-30 kts at 06Z and will be SSW around 20 kts or higher at times Wed and gusts in the 30s. SSW winds to slowly decrease about 5-10 kts later Wed afternoon/evening and turn WNW at PIA around 05Z/11 pm late Wed evening as cold front moves through. Issued at 330 PM CST Tue Feb 15 2022 Frost depth measurements on Monday were mainly in the 6-8 inch range east of I-55 and north of I-70, with around 2 inches south of I-70. Temperatures are expected to remain in the 40s overnight and reach the 50s on Wednesday, which should cause some thawing from the top down. Question will be how far down that thaw takes place. Extra measurements will be taken tomorrow morning for verification. Morning snowfall analysis from the National Operational Hydrologic Remote Sensing Center (NOHRSC) shows up to 1 inch of water equivalent is in the remaining snow depth, which is most concentrated over east central Illinois. With deterministic model guidance favoring an axis of 2-2.5 inches near or just north of I-70 for the heaviest rainfall, extensive runoff is expected.
