Based on observational trends late this morning.. the Red Flag
Warning in effect for this afternoon has been expanded to include
virtually the entire Tri-State area -- except for Wichita/Gove
counties in KS.
A fair amount of uncertainty persists with regard to (1) maximum
wind gusts and (2) the timing of the SW => NW wind shift Tuesday
afternoon.. both of which will heavily depend upon the precise
evolution of a broad/deep lee cyclone late tonight and Tuesday
morning. Sustained winds ranging from 30-50 mph and gusts in the
55-65 mph range (from the SW and/or NW) cannot be ruled out
anywhere in the Tri-State area. With this in mind -- the High
Wind Watch has been expanded to include the entire Tri-State
area.

Across the Tri State region this morning, skies are a partly to
mostly cloudy mix with high pressure transitioning thru the area.
Winds across the area are light/variable, with temperatures ranging
mainly in the 30s, with some locales near 40F east of Highway 83.
The main weather concerns in the short term period will focus on
fire wx today and Tuesday, high wind potential Tuesday and blowing
dust with it. Also some light wintry precipitation is possible
Tuesday night. With colder air wrapping into the area, wind chill
concerns possible for Tuesday/Wednesday nights.
Going into today, south-southwest flow is expected to develop by the
afternoon as high pressure sets up east of the region, with a trough
to the west over the Front Range. This downslope flow expected to
further dry the region out. Expecting rh values to drop into the mid
and upper teens this afternoon. This, combined with gusts expected
in the 30-40 mph range, is allowing for the current Red Flag Warning
to remain intact. The remainder of the cwa will remain under near
critical fire wx conditions as red flag criteria not fully met, but
close and will need to be monitored.
Southerly winds to persist tonight, giving way to worsening
conditions going into Tuesday. Winds to intensify by the afternoon.

close to previous forecast. The potential for gusts approaching 45-
60 mph, especially along/south of the Interstate, will allow for the
High Wind Watch to remain at this time. Some models in question for
how high and will let next shift get another look at guidance before
upgrading.
Also with the persistent downslope flow, drying will continue to
persist. With rh values the same or slightly lower than yesterday,
have decided to upgrade the entire cwa to a Red Flag Warning. The
only caveat will be the aforementioned trough shifting east as a
cold front ahead of a shortwave. The timing of the movement eastward
is in question and could greatly impact warning coverage, especially
in Colorado. With the expected front, wind shift to the northwest
will impact any first responders should they be on any potential
fires and will need to monitor the conditions.
The other concern for Tuesday will be the potential for blowing dust
mainly during the afternoon hours. Best chances will be in the
higher wind potential in the High Wind Watch area.
Overall the expected winds today and especially tuesday will impact
area travelers, especially in high profile vehicles on east-west
roadways, like Interstate 70. The expected shift from southerly to
north-northwesterly winds will only make things worse late into the
afternoon/early evening timeframe.
Behind the cold frontal passage Tuesday night into Wed/Wed night,
colder air will work into the region. The impact will be most felt
Wed/Wed night. Light rain/snow showers Tuesday night expected, with
little to no accumulation.
Wind chill readings come back into play for Tuesday/Wednesday nights
as persistent strong winds will mix with potential colder temps.

For temps, looking for highs today to range in the 60s, but on
Tuesday, near record highs(mainly east of the Colorado border)with a
range from the 70s west to the mid and upper 80s east. With the
frontal passage, cooler air for Wednesday as highs only in the mid
40s to mid 50s, warmest east. Lows tonight will range in the 40s,
giving way to upper teens to around 30F Tuesday night. Even colder
area-wide Wednesday night with mid teens to mid 20s, warmest east.
With the colder overnight temps, and persistent wind, the area
will see wind chill readings Tuesday night ranging from the single
numbers above zero west, thru the teens and mid 20s for central
and eastern areas. For Wednesday night, the area will see single
numbers above zero mainly, with some teens east of Highway 83.
.LONG TERM...(Thursday through Sunday)

Thursday... The Tri-State area is expected to be under WNW to NW
flow aloft as the upper low continues to trek northeast towards Lake
Superior and into Canada. Temperatures are expected to begin warming
up during the latter half of the week, with highs in the mid 50s to
lower 60s Thursday afternoon. There is potential for elevated to
near critical fire weather conditions on Thursday due to RH values
in the mid to upper teens and NW to SW winds gusting up to 30 mph.
The main area of concern is in NW Kansas and portions of extreme SW
Nebraska where the lower humidity values are more widespread.
Overnight lows are expected to fall into the mid 20s to lower 30s
Thursday night.
Friday... The weak ridge will push further north into the Dakotas on
Friday with the upper flow becoming more WNW across the area.
Temperatures are expected to warm further into the mid 60s to lower
70s. Elevated to near critical fire weather conditions are once
again possible during the afternoon hours for areas west of Kansas
Hwy 25; however, it looks to be quite marginal given the southerly
to westerly winds gusting as high as 20-25 mph. Overnight lows are
forecast to be in the upper 20s to mid 30s.
Saturday... The upper ridge axis is expected to move over the region
during the day with a lee surface trough developing off the Front
Range during the afternoon hours. As the lee trough strengthens,
there is potential for light rain in the evening and a rain/snow mix
during the overnight hours. Guidance is not handling the potential
precipitation well, so PoPs have been kept around 20% or less.
Little to no accumulation of moisture is anticipated. Temperatures
are expected to be in the 60s for highs and mostly in the low to mid
30s overnight.
Sunday... There remains quite a bit of uncertainty amongst the
guidance in regards to the overall pattern. The GFS keeps the area
in a nearly zonal flow with weak disturbances traveling across
the Rockies and High Plains while the ECMWF has a deep upper
trough moving southeast. How the pattern evolved will determine
where the precipitation occurs over the Great Plains. For now, the
light rain/snow is expected to become all light rain Sunday
morning and transition to light snow during the overnight hours as
temperatures drop below freezing. As guidance becomes more
consistent, more information will become clear into how this next
system will impact the Tri-State area. Temperatures on Sunday are
forecast to range from the mid 50s to lower 60s for highs to the
20s overnight.

A Red Flag Warning remains in effect for Norton, Graham and Red
Willow counties for the late morning to early evening hours today.
Gusts to 30 mph and humidity dropping into the lower teens will
create dangerous fire weather conditions. The remainder of the
area will see Near Critical conditions.
A Red flag Warning is in effect for the entire Tri State area for
late Tuesday morning into the early evening hours. Gusts 45 to 60
mph and humidity down to the lower teens will create another
dangerous situation. Adding to this, a cold front will impact the
region during the afternoon. Timing is uncertain, but wind shifts
from southerly to northwesterly will impact any first responders
on potential fires.
Elevated to Near Critical conditions are expected for Thursday
and Friday afternoons.
