.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Wednesday)

Tonight...mid and high level cloud cover will be prevalent across
the area. A few rain showers possible south of the Interstate. Low
temperatures in the middle 20s (along/west of CO/KS border) to the
lower 30s elsewhere.
Monday-Monday night...the flow aloft backs to the southwest ahead of
an intensifying upper low and trough west of the Continental Divide.
Southerly winds increase through the day with gusts up to 45 mph
expected, highest across far eastern Colorado. High temperatures
will generally be in the lower to upper 60s. Low temperatures in the
lower to middle 40s.
Tuesday-Tuesday night...a high impact weather day is likely. A deep
upper low centered over Idaho in the morning will migrate into
Wyoming and Montana in the afternoon then into the Dakotas
overnight.
Strong southwest winds gusting 45 to 60 mph are expected, highest in
the afternoon. A High Wind Watch is in effect for much of the area
along and south of Interstate 70. Local dust storm research
continues to advertise (per GFS/GEM models) areas of blowing dust
from late morning through the afternoon ahead of the front
(originating from the sand dunes in southern Colorado)...mainly
south of a line from McCook to Flagler. Visibilities as low as 1 to
3 miles are possible. To the north of this line, patchy blowing dust
is possible and mostly associated with a cold front coming in from
the northwest.
High temperatures are expected to be in the lower to middle 70s in
far eastern Colorado the middle to upper 80s from McCook to Leoti
east. Still optimistic that Norton and Graham counties could reach
90 degrees if the ECMWFBC verifies which is in line with full
mixing at 850mb. A few record highs are possible if the ECMWFBC
solution verifies.
For the overnight hours, northwest winds gusting up to 35 mph are
expected. Rain showers will gradually change over to snow showers
from northwest to southeast as colder air moves in. No accumulation
is expected. Low temperatures fall into the lower 20s to lower 30s.
Wednesday...generally dry and windy with northwest winds gusting up
to 45 mph. High temperatures in the lower 40s to lower 50s.
.LONG TERM...(Wednesday night through Sunday)

At the beginning of the long term period, forecast guidance shows
the CWA with a west-northwesterly flow being underneath the back
part of an upper air trough on Wednesday night. However, both the
NAM and GFS have an upper air low over the ND/SD border changing the
orientation of the trough a bit from the ECMWF as it does not have
this feature. On Thursday, models show the CWA having a westerly
flow as the trough starts to move eastward with ECMWF developing an
upper air low over the MN/WI border while the GFS takes its low over
the MN/Canada border. On Friday, models show a ridge moving eastward
over the CWA though the ECMWF shows a more northwesterly flow aloft
while the GFS stays westerly throughout the day. Going into
Saturday, both long term models show westerly upper air flows over
the CWA with a trough developing out west and a shortwave
disturbance making its was over the CWA during the evening hours. On
Sunday, the trough makes it over the CWA though its orientation
differs a bit between the long term models with the ECMWF's trough
being more broad. While the long term models do show some
similarities, discrepancies are still present in their solutions
which hopefully will be resolved in future runs.
At the surface, the CWA looks to stay mostly dry until the weekend
when chances of precipitation are seen. Temperatures look to take a
gradual a warming trend to start going through Saturday when a
possible surface low passes through during the day ushering in a
cold front overnight into Sunday. Models disagree with the exact
placement of this low and the GFS shows it more of a surface trough.
The ECMWF also shows a possible brief warm front on Saturday with
warmer temperatures though the GFS does not show this at all. Quite
the discrepancy here, but it may have to do with the surface
features. The precipitation chances are more evident late Saturday
into Sunday in the GFS for the northern parts of the CWA than the
ECWMF which keeps them more north and out of the CWA. Will continue
to monitor for better consistency here.
The Tri-State area looks to see daytime high temperatures on
Thursday between the middle 50s and lower 60s followed by highs on
Friday between the lower and upper 60s. Saturday expects daytime
high temperatures in the upper 50s to lower 60s before highs on
Sunday cool to the upper 40s to middle 50s. Overnight lows on
Wednesday night plummet to the middle teens to middle 20s range with
Thursday night seeing lows in the middle 20s to lower 30s. Overnight
low temperatures on Friday and Saturday expect to be in the middle
20s to lower 30s followed by Sunday night seeing lows in the lower
to middle 20s.

For KGLD... VFR conditions are expected through the period. Winds
will be roughly north/west through the overnight hours. During the
day, winds will become more southerly and strengthen to include
gusts around 25-30 kts.
For KMCK... VFR conditions are expected through the period. Winds
will gradually become southerly through the overnight hours and
strengthen to have gusts around 20-25 during the afternoon hours.
Guidance suggests that LLWS could be possible tomorrow evening as
the flow strengthens ahead of the next low pressure system.
