Summary: A large low pressure system will continue moving into the
Great Lakes region this week and persist into the weekend. Fluffy
snow accumulations combined with very strong winds will be resulting
in near-blizzard conditions for the latter half of the week,
especially along the North and South Shores. Holiday travel impacts
will be likely, especially since wind chills will be dropping well
below zero.
Snow has been progressing into the CWA today as a large low
pressure system continues its march into the upper Midwest.
Isentropic ascent is expected to continue through tonight and into
Thursday, resulting in widespread snowfall. Both deterministic
and ensemble models have been fairly consistent in recent runs
compared to previous runs in terms of both winds and snow amounts.
Therefore, few changes were made this afternoon to the previous
forecast. Even though run-to-run changes have been few, there were
will a few things that were adjusted.
The primary change made this afternoon is to the amount of snowfall
and the magnitude of wind gusts. Since ensemble member pressure
centers have been trending farther east, this has resulted in much
of the lake-effect snow shifting more into the Upper Peninsula of MI
and away from the Penokee Range. Even though the accumulations of
18"+ will be outside of the CWA, northern Iron County is still
progged to see around 12 to 16 inches tonight through Friday night.
Another location that is expected to see higher accumulations will
be the higher elevations of the Bayfield Peninsula. The most recent
run of the HREF as well as numerous CAMs show the development of a
gravity wave off of the higher terrain of the North Shore late
Thursday through Friday. When combined with lake-effect snow and
orographic effects, this could lead to 9 to 11 inches of snow
tonight through Friday night.
In addition to the snow accumulations, the other concern associated
with this week's low pressure system will be the very strong winds.
Expect winds to begin ramping up on Thursday afternoon and remain
elevated through at least Saturday. The timing for the strongest
winds will be throughout the day Friday. Model soundings continue to
show very strong winds aloft, especially along the North Shore of
Lake Superior and in the Arrowhead region. Looking at GFS soundings
for Lutsen on Friday, winds throughout the mixed layer will be
around 45 knots with the potential for winds around 60 knots mixing
down to the sfc. While the North Shore will see the highest winds
exceeding 40 knots, the remainder of the CWA will still see strong
wind gusts of 30-40 knots on Friday.
These strong winds are expected to result in a few impacts. The
first will be greatly reduced visibilities due to blowing snow.
Since temps will remain cold, SLRs were forecasted around the 15:1
to 20:1 range. This light and fluffy snow will easily be lofted by
the strong winds occurring over the next few days, producing periods
of whiteout conditions at times. Winter Storm Warnings remain in
effect, mainly due to the snow accumulations and blowing snow
concerns. An upgrade to a Blizzard Warning will possibly be needed
for the North Shore and especially the South Shore on Thursday night
through Friday. In addition to the snow and blowing snow, strong
winds will also result in dangerously cold wind chills as low as -35
degrees over the next few nights. Finally, snow loading from the
recent "Blue Blizzard" on trees across the CWA may also cause power
outages as branches or trees potentially break. Make sure to
maintain weather-awareness over the next few days, especially since
this storm will be coinciding with holiday travel.
The pattern following this week's system will be eventually trending
warmer with high temps returning to the 20s by mid next week.
Widespread precip chances appear limited next week, with the next
best chance for wintry precip occurring next Wednesday as a
shortwave propagates through the CWA.

The forecast will start out relatively quiet with winds 15 knots or
less early. Winds will become northerly along the North Shore late
increasing to 15 to 25 knots by 6 AM CST. Winds all areas will
continue to increase through the day and be north to northwest.
Gales will develop by early Thursday evening and they will increase
further Thursday night with widespread gales of 35 to 45 knots.
There is a chance for storm force gusts around 50 knots as well,
mainly along portions of the North Shore and over the Outer Apostle
Islands. We issued a Small Craft Advisory on Thursday before the
winds pick up to gales and also a Storm Watch for the areas most
likely to see winds at or above 50 knots. The strong wind will last
into at least Saturday with winds finally expected to diminish
Sunday.
Widespread snow is expected through most of the period, with the
South Shore seeing the longest period and lowest visibility as lake
processes enhance the snow there Thursday into Saturday.
As waves build late Thursday into Saturday, freezing spray will
become a threat and a Freezing Spray Warning has been issued.
