Summary: Snow will continue through the day for much of our area.
Snow will end for most on Friday except for the South Shore in
Wisconsin. However, the threat for hazardous road conditions will
not end. Increasing winds tonight will cause the freshly fallen
snow to blow around through the majority of the weekend. This will
likely affect holiday travel throughout the Upper Midwest.
Snow is falling across our entire CWA. SLRs calculated from
previous snow and liquid measurements is lower than what has been
previously forecasted due to temperatures along the vertical
profile intermittently being colder than within the DGZ. This may
impact snow totals across the area, though should only lower them
slightly, as dendrites are still prominent within the snowfall.
The track of the low has ceased its easterly transition from run
to run in the ensembles, so snowfall has not shifted east with
this forecast package.
As the low pressure system moves east, snow will continue on the
back end of the system as moisture is wrapped around the low.
Northwest winds over Lake Superior will cause lake enhanced snow
in the snow belt in northwestern Wisconsin, which will cause the
lake enhanced to transition to lake effect that will last into the
weekend. While most of the CWA will see additional snow totals
less than 6 inches, the South Shore and the very tip of the
Arrowhead could still see up to another foot, with totals over a
foot possible in the Wisconsin snow belt.
As the low slowly moves through the Great Lakes region, the
associated upper level trough will deepen further, strengthening
the low and the pressure gradient over the area. Winds will
increase as a result, with gusts up to 35 mph throughout tonight
and reaching 40-50 mph by Friday. Two hazardous conditions will
affect the Northland from these winds. These high winds combined
with the below average temperatures we have been seeing this week
will cause some frigid wind chills where frostbite will occur
within minutes. Second, the winds and the fresh snow pack will
cause blowing snow for much of Friday and Saturday. We have been
monitoring for possible blizzard conditions due to these
variables, but the heavier snow from last night and this morning
has caused the snow to be more compact than originally
anticipated. Despite this, blizzard conditions are still possible,
but may have become slightly more limited. A Blizzard Warning for
portions of the Northland may still be needed.
Unfortunately, we may not see much of a break after the current
system ceases impacting the Midwest on Christmas. Global models
show another small clipper moving through the Northern Plains
Sunday night, though it is uncertain whether this clipper will
affect our area. A series of clippers will continue through next
week, but there doesn't seem to be a signal for another impactful
event with any of these systems.

Snow showers continue through this morning as the low makes its
way through the Midwest. Visibilities seem to be improving,
though visibilities in the TAF were kept as IFR for the next
couple hours in case they lower again. Some terminals will see a
short break in hazardous weather as wind gusts increase throughout
the day and cause blowing snow across the Northland tonight
through Saturday morning. Blizzard conditions are possible with
these winds as visibilities are reduced from the blowing snow,
though the wetter snow that fell last night may inhibit that
possibility slightly.

Snow showers and increasing winds in the nearshore waters will
continue today. The pressure gradient with this system will cause
winds to increase to their peak tonight into Friday, with gales in
excess of 40 kts and gusts reaching storm force gusts up to 50
kts along the North Shore and in the Apostle Islands. Small Craft
Advisories through this afternoon will give way to Gale and Storm
Warnings and Heavy Freezing Spray Warnings starting this evening.
Winds will begin to decrease on Saturday, but higher wave heights
may linger for longer.
