.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Saturday)

Main forecast concerns over the next 48 hours will be (1) the
potential for severe weather later today and tonight and (2)
Strong gusty winds which may begin as early as Friday morning, but
more likely on Saturday across a more widespread area over the
eastern plains.

Current surface analysis and observations across the area show a
broad surface low over south central Wyoming with another one near
the Front Range of Colorado. Low level winds have started to shift
more into the east and northeast ahead of these surface low
pressure centers, but have been slow to do so today. Aloft, upper
level shortwave disturbance is just now starting to eject
eastward with some convection getting going across central Wyoming
including Carbon, Albany, and Converse Counties this afternoon.
Maybe some showers with this activity but any thunderstorms have
mainly been further west. Expect that to change over the next few
hours, but the boundary layer is still pretty dry. Dewpoints in
Douglas has actually lowered a few more degrees since this
morning, suggesting an overall lack of moisture. Believe the
severe threat to be very limited this afternoon for southeast
Wyoming since SBCAPE and MUCAPE are struggling to reach 1000 j/kg
based on current Mesoscale analysis. Plus MLCAPE are barely 100 to
200 j/kg which is going to be the main problem through late this
afternoon. Expect gusty winds from these showers and isolated
thunderstorms. For tonight, SPC has kept most of the western
Nebraska Panhandle in a slight risk for severe thunderstorms,
which is mainly for hail but some gusty convective winds are
possible. This is the result of the southern portion of the upper
level shortwave/jet max ejecting east this evening, with models
showing good return flow/moisture advection from the Great Plains.
So far, dewpoints have not increased over western Nebraska with
the bulk of the moisture still well to the southeast across
southern Nebraska and Kansas. Until low level winds shift into the
southeast, moisture advection will be difficult across western
Nebraska. Still expect this to happen overnight tonight, but if
moisture advection and the upper level shortwave are off on timing
by just a few hours, any strong or severe thunderstorms may be
very isolated or further to the east. Regardless, still expect a
2nd round of thunderstorms to develop just east of the I-25
corridor sometime between 8 PM this evening and midnight. A few
storms may contain large hail and strong gusty winds. Worded
forecast for potential for severe thunderstorms and went a little
more aggressive with decent rainfall amounts. Once the severe
threat has ended and the storms move east, expect some patchy fog
to develop due to upslope southeast winds.

Weak surface cold front and the Pacific upper level trough will
then push through the region by mid Friday morning, resulting in
winds shifting into the west and increasing. Will have to monitor
how the wind prone areas react to the surface pressure gradient
increasing in addition to low level boundary layer mixing later in
the morning hours. In house wind models are showing the potential
for some brief strong gusty winds in a few areas with most of the
Wind Prone areas showing at least very windy conditions. Decided
to issue a High Wind Watch for Arlington/Elk Mountain and the I-80
Summit where probabilities are moderately higher than the
surrounding areas. However, can't rule out most of the I-25
corridor as well even if wind direction appears more out of the
northwest/north than westerly. Rain showers, with snow above 7000
feet is expected to redevelop later Friday morning and continue
through the afternoon hours due to daytime instability and the
trough axis/cold pool aloft being positioned over the area through
most of the day. Any snow accumulations should be confined to the
mountains with maybe up to an inch on elevated/grassy surfaces
down to elevations of 7500 to 8000 feet. Once the trough axis
shifts to the east, strong northwest winds are forecast to develop
as a surface low intensifies over Kansas and southern Nebraska.
These events this month have consistently produced strong winds
over the high plains of southeast Wyoming and western Nebraska;
therefore, issued a High Wind Watch for far eastern Wyoming and
all of western Nebraska starting as early as Friday evening, but
the bulk of the winds should be for Saturday after a brief
lowering in wind speeds Friday night. All models show decent low
level subsidence behind the system as well as 700mb winds of 55 to
65 knots. NBM 4.1 and NBM 90 percentile show high probabilities of
gusts over 48 knots across this area (> 70 to 80 percent through
Saturday afternoon). Added blowing dust to the forecast, mainly
across the southern NE panhandle where not much precipitation is
expected to fall tonight into Friday. Otherwise, high temperatures
will be close to average, or slightly below, with readings in the
50s to low 60s Friday and Saturday.

.LONG TERM...(Saturday night through Thursday)

Active extended period for our CWA into next week as a series of
low pressure systems move through the area.

Upper ridge axis moves over the CWA Saturday night as next low
pressure system moves into western Wyoming. Ridge axis slides east
Sunday afternoon as the low approaches. Sunday mainly dry...but
should see an increase in precip chances Sunday evening. Current
ECMWF hitting our southeastern zones while GFS covers most of the
CWA in fairly widespread rainfall after midnight into Monday
morning. Looks too warm for snow...but the mountains could see
moderate accumulations as 700mb temperatures fall to -4C Monday
morning.

Next stronger low pressure system arrives Tuesday night into
Wednesday. Again...some major model disagreement as GFS has low
further north...while ECMWF tracks the 500 and 700mb lows across
Colorado. Should this solution come true...could be looking at
more widespread snow across much of the CWA. ECMWF 700mb
temperatures down near -6 to -7C...so lower elevations could get
in to the snow. ECMWF solution also holds on to the low as it
meanders around northeast Colorado and western nebraska through
Thursday. Would be nice to see this solution come true to help the
area ease drought conditions. If the GFS solution holds true...a
dry/windy pattern would then occur with heavier precip amounts
north and east.

Will have to watch which solution comes to pass. As we get closer
to next week...hopefully we come into better agreement in model
solutions.
