.SYNOPSIS...
A surface trough lingers over the eastern Great Lakes through
Sunday as deep low pressure wobbles across northwestern Quebec.
High pressure briefly ridges northward across Ohio Sunday
night. The next area of low pressure is expected to impact the
area Monday into Monday night, but it looks as if it will be
weakening as it passes overhead.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SUNDAY/...
The accumulating snow has ended across the CWA for now as the
main band of lake effect snow shifted up the lake and is now
located near and north of the City of Buffalo. However the deep
low over Quebec continues to provide the region with winds in
the 15 to 25 mph range with gusts in the 30 to 40 mph range,
maybe slightly higher along the lakeshore. There seems to be
enough blowing snow continuing to make us keep the Winter Storm
Warning for a few more hours with impacts on area roadways.
Winds are also elevated enough to keep wind chill temperatures
around the minus 25 level for the wind chill warning. The wind
chill warning will continue through mid morning. after saying
all that we are going to keep headlines as they are through 7AM.
Winds may have a slight uptick with the first mix this morning
but temperatures should warm slightly. So wind chill temperatures
may improve enough so that we can just add a wind chill
advisory to the region through this afternoon through Christmas
morning.
Current thinking is that we will be able to remove the Winter
storm warning with the 7 AM update and end up replacing it with
a winter weather advisory for the lakeshore areas of Ohio from
Cuyahoga/Lake County to Ashtabula county to cover the blowing
snow that is likely to continue. The lake effect snow that we
mentioned above that is impacting Buffalo should start to shift
back to the south late today into tonight. There is alot of
uncertainty on how far this band of snow moves. This setup
looks very similar to a couple days ago when southwesterly
surface winds were enough to keep the heaviest snow oriented
into Chautauqua County as the upper level flow blows some of
this snow into Erie County, PA. So we do think some
accumulations should occur, especially near and north of I-86.
This leads us to believe we should handle Erie County with a
winter weather advisory. We will cover the blowing snow that
should occur near I-90 and I-86 through the afternoon and then
expect to see 3-5, maybe 4 to 6 inches, over 24 hours for
portions of Erie County later this evening into Sunday morning.
We will need to monitor this band closely and upgrade to
warnings if needed.

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
With flow backing from westerly to southwesterly Sunday night as
high pressure slides across the Ohio Valley, lake effect that may
still be impacting the eastern lakeshore will gradually shift back
out over the lake by Monday morning. Environment does not support
significant lake effect by the start of this period so any
accumulations along the Ashtabula or Erie County lakeshore Sunday
night will be minimal. It will otherwise be dry but still cold
Sunday night into Monday morning across the area, with lows in the
single digits for most of us once again.
A weakening clipper still dives through the Ohio Valley Monday into
Monday night. Models remain in fair agreement on light QPF making it
at least into western/central Ohio and possibly just the entire
area, so maintain a window of chance POPs area-wide and those POPs
will need to come up if models remain consistent any longer. Models
currently maintain a push of mid-level warm air advection/isentropic
lift into parts of western and southwestern Ohio with the clipper,
which could lead to enough of a period of snow to squeeze out an
inch or two over towards Findlay or Marion on Monday...elsewhere,
thinking any snow accums Monday into Monday night are under an inch.
Any snow from this clipper should dissipate/move east of the area
Monday night, leaving dry conditions. Highs on Monday in the upper
10s/lower 20s, lows Monday night not dropping off much into the 10s
given cloud cover.
Behind the clipper, southwest winds try to veer more westerly Monday
night into Tuesday morning which will push what could be a light to
moderate lake effect snow band towards the eastern lakeshore. Bring
POPs in mainly along and north of I-90 for this potential from
northeastern Lake County points east through Erie County PA. Some
accumulating snow may be possible along the eastern lakeshore before
high pressure building into the Ohio Valley and Appalachia pushes
winds southwesterly and lowers the subsidence inversion during the
day Tuesday, ending any lake effect snow potential. This
aforementioned high pressure should keep the rest of the area dry
Tuesday and Tuesday night, with dry southerly flow hopefully eroding
enough of the stratus to get some sunshine. Highs should moderate
into the mid to upper 20s on Tuesday, with one last night in the 10s
to near 20 for lows Tuesday night.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
The current massive trough over eastern North America will be
replaced by a ridge aloft along the east coast through this period,
setting up broad southwesterly flow across the region. This will
push temperatures to near or a bit above average on Wednesday and
well above average for Thursday and Friday. Highs may near 50 in the
typical warm spots (I-75 over towards Cleveland) Thursday and should
breach the 50 degree mark for more of the area on Friday. Moisture
return ahead of a low pressure that will slowly gather over the
Plains and then track towards the Upper Midwest at the end of the
week may bring a bit of (rain) shower activity late in the week, but
current impression is that any steadier/heavier rain holds off until
closer to the weekend, so just have low chances for rain mentioned
at times Wednesday night through Friday.

Winds continue to be the main impact. Southwesterly winds of 15
to 25 knots will be common into the evening. Gusts 35 to maybe
40 knots possible.
MVFR ceilings are observed with widespread IFR and lower
visibilities due to blowing snow. Visibilities should gradually
improve as winds slowly decrease. It will improvement but MVFR
visibilities may return by late morning/early afternoon.
Outlook...Non-VFR with low visibilities from blowing snow and
lake effect snow possible. The lake effect snow should only
impact the lakeshore near KERI through Sunday Light snow
showers are possible Monday through Monday night.

of Ripley in the open waters for now after chatting with NWS BUF, as
land-based stations continue to gust to 50-60+ knots on that end of
the lake and it's likely sustained winds near 50 knots are occurring
near the edge of the intense lake effect band affecting the eastern
end of the lake given how high gusts on land are. This Storm Warning
runs until 10am this morning, and will be followed with a Gale
Warning when it expires. Expect winds in the western basin to drop
below gale this evening, with the central and eastern basin dropping
below gale late tonight or Sunday morning. Residual Small Craft
conditions linger Sunday into Monday morning once we finally get rid
of the gales. The extreme displacement of water towards the eastern
end of the lake noted on Friday remains, though is not quite as
extreme with Toledo now currently only about 4 feet below the
critical mark for safe navigation as opposed to 7 or 8 feet below.
Expect waters to slowly rise to safer levels for navigation in the
western basin Sunday as winds decrease below gale. Low Water
Advisory remains as posted in the meantime. Heavy Freezing Spray
remains a concern so long as winds and waves remain elevated this
weekend, with rapid ice development possible in the western basin
both Sunday and Monday nights when cold low temperatures are coupled
with lighter winds. The Heavy Freezing Spray Warning continues as
posted through most of the weekend.
After lingering impacts from this large, drawn-out storm depart to
start the week a weak clipper slides through the Ohio Valley Monday
into Monday night with no notable uptick in winds or waves expected
over the lake. Gradient tightens ahead of low pressure over the
Plains Thursday and Friday and will strengthen the offshore flow to
15 to 25 knots and increase waves to a few feet over the open waters.
