.SYNOPSIS...
Deepening low pressure moves northeast into the Great Lakes
region this morning. A very strong arctic cold front extending
from this low races eastward across the region through sunrise.
A surface trough then lingers over the eastern Great Lakes
through Sunday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
9:30 PM Update...
Visibilities have improved enough to replace the Blizzard
Warning with a Winter Storm Warning, now in place for the
snowbelt counties until 10 AM Saturday. Near to below zero
temperatures persist across the area with wind chill values
between -25F and -30F tonight. Blowing snow still remains to be
an issue for the next several hours as winds continue to gust
between 30 and 40+ MPH. Conditions will gradually improve as
wind speeds relax Saturday evening.

6:30 PM Update...
Observed visibilities have improved over the past couple hours,
though general road/traffic conditions remain poor. Improved
visibilities include observations in the blizzard warning where
the vast majority of weather stations have improved to above
1/4SM. Wind remains very strong so periodic 1/4SM or lower may
still be possible through early tonight. If observed
visibilities continue to improve, may consider replacing the
blizzard warning.

Previous Discussion...
Multiple observations of 1/4 SM or being observed across the
area, with periodic visibilities less than 1/4 SM at times due
to falling snow and blowing snow across the area. Near-zero
visibilities are most persistent and widespread where light
snow is still falling. The snowbelt region, including Cuyahoga,
Lake, Geauga, Ashtabula, Erie PA, and Crawford PA, are likely
to observe the most persistent snowfall, and longest duration of
near-zero visibilities, so we upgraded the winter storm warning
to a blizzard warning for those counties. Many hi-res models
have some amount of light snow falling for at least several more
hours before becoming more reserved to the immediate lakeshore
area of eastern Cuyahoga, Lake, Ashtabula, and Erie PA tonight.
Areas outside of the blizzard warning have observed very low
visibilities of 1/2SM to 1SM due to blowing snow and will
continue to observe periodic low visibility down to 1/4SM, so a
winter storm warning will remain in effect due to those impacts.
These low visibilities appear to be most persistent along the
lakeshore.

Wind gusts of 35-45 knots have been observed, with gusts to 50
knots near the lakeshore. This as caused isolated tree damage,
areas of power outages, and significant blowing snow across the
region. These conditions are expected to remain this way before
very gradually tapering off through tonight to gusts of 30-40
knots Saturday and 25-30 knots by Saturday night. As winds
diminish, impacts associated with them, including the blowing
snow, should also decrease. Once visibilities and impacts associated
with blowing snow diminish, we will be able to cancel the winter
storm warning and blizzard warning.

Wind chills of -30 to -35 have been observed for much of the day
areawide and are expected to continue through tonight. Wind
chill values improve to -10 to -20 Saturday into Saturday night as
temperatures and winds improve.

Lake effect snow has developed in southwest flow across Lake
Erie. The bulk of the snow accumulations associated with the
lake effect is expected to occur along the immediate lakeshore
in northern Lake, Ashtabula, and northern Erie, PA where an
additional 6-10" of new snow is possible. A good deal of
uncertainty still remains with snow amounts as just a few miles
different in the persistent snow band could change snow totals
by several inches. Best chance for heavy snow for these areas
will be Saturday night.

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
The deep and cold cyclonic flow around a powerful low pressure
system near the Hudson Bay region will continue on Sunday. The low
level flow will remain from the west-southwest on Sunday. A band of
Lake effect snow will be ongoing and remain close to the lakeshore
of Lake, Ashtabula, and Erie (PA) continues on Sunday into Sunday
night. Additional snowfall accumulations of several inches will be
likely closer to the lakeshore areas on Christmas. Elsewhere, it
will should stay mostly cloudy and very cold for Christmas Day.

A weak clipper like system will track through the Upper Midwest into
the Ohio Valley on Monday. This system may bring a round of light
snow for the entire area Monday into Monday night. We could see a
dusting to around 1 inch of snowfall for the area with this weak
weather system on Monday. High temperatures on Christmas Day and
Monday will be in the teens and overnight lows in the single
digits. Wind chill values will remain around zero or slight below
zero during the short term period.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
The upper level pattern will become more zonal by the middle of next
week. We will be on the backside of the Arctic high pressure system
by Tuesday with a return to a light southerly wind. The airmass will
finally moderate and we will begin a slow upward trend with the
temperatures through the middle of next week. Low pressure moving
through the Upper Midwest into the Great Lakes region on Wednesday
will cause southerly winds to increase and become gusty. That return
flow from the south will also boost our temperatures above freezing
by Wednesday afternoon. The next chance for precip will be in the
form of light rain by Thursday with temperatures climbing into the
40s to near 50 degrees.

.AVIATION /00Z Saturday THROUGH Wednesday/...
Winds of to 20 to 30 knots with gusts around 40+ knots continue
to be observed. Winds gradually taper off through tonight and
tomorrow to around 30 knot gusts by the end of the TAF period.

MVFR ceilings are observed with widespread IFR and lower
visibilities due to snow and blowing snow. Overall, visibilities
appear to be improving, with variable and wide ranging
visibilities between 1/2-3SM. Visibilities should continue to
trend towards improving as the strong wind gusts responsible for
the blowing snow taper off.

Outlook...Non-VFR areawide through early Sunday with low
ceilings. Low visibilities with blowing snow and lake effect
snow possible for the snowbelt region of northeast Ohio and
northwest Pennsylvania through Sunday. Wind gusts of 30+ kts
possible through Saturday night. Light snow showers are possible
Monday through Monday night.

.MARINE...
A deepening low pressure over Ontario and western Quebec will cause
extremely hazardous marine conditions through Saturday over Lake
Erie. Strongest winds will be through tonight with storm force winds
this evening slowly decreasing to Gales later tonight. Gusts up to
60 knots may occur over the central and eastern basin at times.
Winds will gradually decrease Saturday and Sunday. The Storm Warning
remains as posted for the entire lake, dropping off early Saturday
morning in the western basin and later Saturday morning to the east.
These will likely be followed by a Gale Warning through Saturday
afternoon in the west and Saturday evening in the east, though we
will not hoist the follow-up Gale Warnings until we expire the Storm
Warnings. Heavy freezing spray will remain an issue through Sunday
and the Heavy Freezing Spray Warning remains as posted.

Water levels have crashed to all time record low levels at Toledo
today. The latest observation as of 330 pm EST was -92.8 inches at
Toledo. The Low Water Advisory well remain as posted for the western
basin through Saturday. These levels will slowly improve Saturday
night into Sunday as winds finally drop below gale.

Quieter marine conditions return Sunday night into Monday with
relatively tranquil conditions through Thursday. Southerly winds may
increase Wednesday into Thursday, perhaps pushing 20 knots. Ice
formation may occur quickly on the western basin Sunday and Monday
nights when winds relax a little bit, with cold lows both
nights.
