Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
A strong cold front will sweep through the region later
tonight. Thereafter, much cooler high pressure will build into
the area and persist through the middle of the week. Another
cold front could impact the area late week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Pre-frontal line of convection (still no lightning) has edged
into the northwestern half of the CWA over the last few hours.
Outflow with the line has moved out ahead of the line just a bit
while overall coverage of precip has diminished despite
instability increasing in the last several hours. Just not
enough larger scale forcing/low level convergence to sustain
convection. Made tweaks to POPs to keep precip mostly confined
across that northwestern half the CWA through the rest of the
afternoon hours. Just by virtue of effect bulk shear values in
excess of 60 knots and definite updraft organization seen on
radar, still cannot rule out an isolated severe wind threat
this afternoon. But probabilities are low. Main show comes
tonight...

This evening and tonight: The vigorous trough will move across the
Deep South and begin to take on a more neutral or even slightly
negative tilt as it approaches the forecast area. With the arrival
of the trough and the coincident strong dynamic forcing, a surface
low will quickly deepen in the vicinity of central Georgia and the
primary cold front will become north to south oriented across
southern Georgia. This strong cold front will then quickly sweep
eastward in the evening and early morning hours, clearing the entire
forecast area by sunrise Monday. As this occurs, a band of showers
and isolated thunderstorms developing along and just ahead of the
front will translate across the forecast area bring widespread
precipitation. This is when most of the rainfall will occur, and the
evening/overnight period should bring amounts roughly in the 0.25-
0.75" range. When added to the daytime totals, storm total rainfall
is forecast to be on the order of 0.50-1.50" through sunrise. Strong
southerly winds will persist through the evening, then shift to
become westerly behind the front late tonight. In fact, the pre-dawn
hours will bring wind gusts into the 30-35 mph range in the
immediate wake of the cold front and deepening surface low passing
into central North Carolina. Cold advection behind the front will
result in quickly falling temperatures late tonight, with
temperatures by sunrise Monday in the upper 40s for interior
southeast Georgia ranging to the mid to upper 50s in the Charleston
Tri-County region.

Severe weather threat: The second severe weather threat associated
with this dynamic system will take place during the evening and
overnight hours. Overall, the near storm environment will be quite
similar, though the convective mode will change a bit in the
presence of the strong linear forcing associated with the cold
front. The background wind field will be even more exceedingly
impressive with 500 mb flow of 80+ knots, yielding 0-6 km shear of
70 knots. Furthermore, a howling low-level jet will work into the
region, producing 850 mb flow of 50+ knots and enough low-level
veering to produce 0-3 km SRH values on the order of 200-300 m2/s2.
However, we will continue to work with a very limited instability
environment. In fact, model sounding suggest that it could be
difficult for parcels to become rooted at the surface. MLCAPE progs
are in the 200-400 J/kg range. The expectation is that the evening
and overnight will bring linear convective segments that could be
capable of damaging wind gusts as well as an embedded tornado or two
where the best pockets of instability develop. So much like the
daytime hours, the overall severe threat will be on the low end due
to available instability. However, we will have to closely monitor
radar for potential damaging wind gusts and possibly a few rapid
tornado spin-ups embedded within convective lines.

Lake Winds: For today, winds across the center of Lake Moultrie
likely won't be that strong due to water temperatures in the low 60s
and the lack of any mixing profiles. However, the south and
southwest facing lakeshore areas will likely see frequent gusts to
around 25 knots. The strongest winds will occur after a strong cold
front passes late tonight. Mixing profiles will deepen and by
sunrise Monday we should see a solid 20-25 knots with frequent gusts
to around 30 knots across the entire lake. A Lake Wind Advisory
remains in effect.

&&

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Monday through Wednesday: Following a strong cold front, cool and
dry high pressure will build into the region. Lingering gusty winds
will persist through early Monday afternoon due to an enhanced
pressure gradient. Therefore, a Lake Wind Advisory for Lake Moultrie
will remain in place until noon Monday. Thereafter, the weather will
be quiet with a dry forecast in place for land areas. Over the
waters, a coastal trough is expected to develop and there could be
scattered showers due to increased moisture and shortwave energy.
Otherwise, temperatures will be much cooler with highs in the 50s on
Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday will be a few degrees warmer.
Overnight temperatures on Monday will dip into the upper 20s to low
30s inland with mid to upper 30s along the coast. Tuesday night
temperatures will be slightly warmer.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
High pressure will shift away from the region on Thursday ahead of
an approaching cold front. The cold front is expected to pass
through the region by late week. While there could be isolated to
scattered showers Thursday/Thursday night, lingering dry air and
subsidence will limit their development as PWATs look to peak around
0.8". High pressure will then build back into the region, bringing
dry weather through much of the weekend. High temperatures on
Thursday will be in the 60s before dropping back into the 50s on
Friday. Thereafter, a warming trend will occur. Lows will be in the
30s to 40s.

.AVIATION /19Z SUNDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Still a thin sliver of IFR marine stratus hugging the Charleston
coast and impacting the JZI terminal site. Stratus should thin
out of that area by 20Z or so. Otherwise, VFR conditions are
dominant across the region. A scattered line of convection
continues to edge through the region and will bring brief heavy
shower to CHS in the next hour or so.

Strong upper level trough will swing across the Deep South
tonight driving an area of deepening low pressure and strong
front through the region heading into Monday morning. Anticipate
a round of fairly widespread showers and some thunderstorms to
roll through the region mainly during the 04Z to 10Z timeframe.
MVFR and brief IFR conditions are possible.

Extended Aviation Outlook: Flight restrictions and gusty winds will
be possible through Monday afternoon due to lingering showers/low
stratus and an enhanced pressure gradient. VFR will then prevail
through much of the week.

.MARINE...
Today and tonight: Strong southwesterly winds will prevail today
ahead of an approaching cold front. Solid Small Craft Advisory
conditions are expected across all waters including the Charleston
Harbor. A strong cold front will sweep across the local waters and
bring an impressive surge of winds late tonight. By sunrise Monday
frequent gusts into the 35-40 knot range are expected and Gale
Warnings have been issued beginning just after midnight for all
zones including Charleston Harbor.

Monday: Due to the passage of a cold front, westerly winds will
frequently gust to gale force (>34 kts) and seas will be around 7-10
feet. Gale Warnings will taper off through the morning and early
afternoon. Seas will likely decrease to 2 to 5 feet by the afternoon
but winds will remain elevated for much of the evening and into the
overnight. Small Craft Advisories will be needed.

Tuesday through Friday: Decent marine conditions will return on
Tuesday and last through much of the week. Another cold front is
expected late week and another round of Small Craft Advisories could
be needed.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
For the upcoming high tide, the astronomical high tide is 6.64
ft MLLW and the overall pattern has been steady state for the
last 12-24 hours. Current tidal departures are running at almost
0.80 ft and our local tide forecast tool yields an expected peak
tide of 7.25 ft MLLW. Current thinking is that the departure
will end up a bit higher than forecast, so we are expecting the
peak tide to be in the 7.1-7.3 ft MLLW range. A Coastal Flood
Advisory has been issued for coastal Colleton and Charleston
counties.

Due to astronomical influences and favorable winds, tides will
be elevated on Tuesday and Wednesday. For the
Charleston/Colleton county coasts, minor to moderate flooding
will be possible with the morning high tide. Elsewhere, minor
flooding will be possible.

At 1217 PM EST, National Weather Service doppler radar indicated
showers with gusty winds along a line extending from near Salters to
near Harleyville, and moving east at 55 mph.

HAZARD...strong winds 45 to 55 mph possible with a sudden wind shift
         into the northwest.

SOURCE...Radar Indicated.

IMPACT...Expect minor damage to tree limbs and blowing around of
         light, unsecured objects.

Some locations in the path of these showers include...
Moncks Corner, Saint Stephen, Bonneau, Southern Lake Moultrie,
Eadytown, Cross, Northern Lake Moultrie and Bonneau Beach.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Boaters on Lake Moultrie and the eastern portions of Lake Marion
should seek safe harbor immediately. If caught on the open water,
stay as low as possible and wear a personal flotation device.
