.SYNOPSIS...
A cold front will move east across the region today with showers and
scattered thunderstorms overspreading the area from west to east. A
few storms may contain gusty winds and heavy downpours this
afternoon and early evening, mainly from the Finger Lakes to the
eastern Lake Ontario region. Most of the showers will end from west
to east this evening following the passage of the cold front,
although a few lake effect rain showers will continue east of Lake
Erie and Lake Ontario overnight into Wednesday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Radar imagery showing mainly dry conditions across the area early
this morning. A few showers across NE Ohio and NW Pennsylvania will
start to move into the western Southern Tier by around, or shortly
after daybreak.

The pattern will amplify across North America over the next 24
hours, with a ridge continuing to build in the west, and a
downstream mid level trough sharpening and digging from the Great
Lakes into New England. At the surface, low pressure will move from
northwest Ontario province this morning to Hudson Bay by tonight,
with a cold front moving from west to east across the area this
afternoon and evening.

Coverage of showers will increase from west to east from mid to late
morning through the afternoon as the cold front moves east into the
area, and as DPVA/height falls spread into the Lower Great Lakes
ahead of the digging trough. A plume of high quality Gulf of Mexico
moisture will be drawn northward ahead of the trough, with PWAT
values approaching 2.0" just ahead of the cold front today. The
combination of ample moisture and increasing forcing will support
fairly widespread showers along and ahead of the cold front, with
coverage of rain peaking in Western NY from late morning through mid
afternoon, and later this afternoon/early evening east of Lake
Ontario.

Extensive clouds and showers starting early in the day will inhibit
destabilization across Western NY. There will be a better potential
for a longer rain free window and thinner cloud cover from the
Finger Lakes to the eastern Lake Ontario region through midday to
early afternoon today. Relatively modest 20-30 knot deep layer shear
may support a few stronger storms this afternoon and early evening
from the Finger Lakes to eastern Lake Ontario region, with a
Marginal Risk of isolated damaging wind gusts. Any thunderstorms or
heavier convective showers will produce locally heavy rainfall given
the high PWAT environment. There appears to be enough steering flow
and eastward cold frontal push to limit residence time of heavy rain
over any one area, keeping the flooding risk relatively low (but non-
zero).

Showers and scattered thunderstorms will taper off from west to east
late this afternoon and evening with the passage of the cold front,
with the more active area of convection exiting Lewis County by
around 00Z Thursday. The mid level trough axis and associated strong
vorticity maxima will cross the lower Great Lakes later tonight. The
trough itself may produce a few spotty showers. Cooling temperatures
aloft combined with very warm late summer water temperatures will
likely produce a lake response, with a few lake enhanced showers
developing over and east of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario overnight.
Forecast soundings suggest enough instability over the lakes to
support some thunder potential as well, especially Lake Ontario
where fetch and synoptic scale support is a little more favorable.

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
At the start of Wednesday...there should still be some leftover
scattered lake effect showers east/east-southeast of both lakes...
particularly east of Lake Ontario where moisture will be more
favorable. These will wind down as the morning progresses and our
airmass dries and disruptive diurnal influences take hold...with the
activity holding on the longest east of Lake Ontario.

Wednesday afternoon and evening another shortwave impulse and an
attendant secondary cold front will approach and cross our region.
Associated lift and moisture along with further cooling of thermal
profiles aloft will bring a general chance of showers to areas from
the eastern Finger Lakes northeastward...with reinvigorated lake
processes and upsloping also helping to generate more numerous lake-
enhanced showers east of Lake Ontario. East of Lake Erie the lake
response may be more muted due to less favorable moisture...warmer
temps aloft...and the shorter fetch...though should still see at
least some scattered activity there Wednesday evening. Off both
lakes...contributions of warmth from the ~24C lake waters may also
be supportive of some isolated thunder.

Later Wednesday night and Thursday morning veering of the flow to
northwesterly and diminishing moisture behind the secondary frontal
passage will cause the lake effect showers to migrate to areas
southeast/south of the lakes and weaken...with renewed diurnal
effects then helping to bring these to an end altogether Thursday
morning. After that high pressure and drier air will steadily build
eastward across New York State and New England through the balance
of this period...bringing fair dry weather areawide.

With respect to temperatures...it will be cooler and much less humid
on Wednesday in the wake of today's cold frontal passage...with
highs generally ranging through the 70s and dewpoints ranging
through the refreshingly lower 50s. An even cooler airmass will then
spread across our region following the passage of the secondary cold
front Wednesday night and Thursday...with highs on Thursday
struggling to climb above the lower to mid 60s across the higher
terrain...and the upper 60s to lower 70s elsewhere. This will be
followed by prime conditions for radiational cooling Thursday
night...when light winds/mainly clear skies/our dry airmass will
allow temps to tumble into the lower half of the 50s closer to the
lakes...and into the 40s inland. Given the favorable setup...have
lowered readings for Thursday night a bit more from continuity.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Friday and Saturday the surface ridge will drift eastward and off
the New England coastline...with the developing southwesterly return
flow and warm air advection regime on its backside helping temps to
quickly climb back to above normal levels for the end of the work
week and start of the weekend. Expect highs to reach back into the
upper 70s and lower 80s Friday...then to the lower 80s (higher
terrain) and mid-upper 80s (lower elevations) Saturday. At the same
time...humidity levels will be on a slower increase with surface
dewpoints only reaching the lower half of the 60s during Saturday.
Otherwise...dry weather will continue to prevail thanks to the
lingering influence of the departing surface ridge.

Saturday night and Sunday broad/flat upper level troughing pushing
across Ontario and Quebec will slowly ease its associated weak cold
front across our region...with this feature possibly supporting some
widely scattered to scattered showers as it passes. The anafrontal
nature of this boundary (i.e., with the majority of its associated
clouds and showers located to its rear) will also likely translate
into somewhat cooler temperatures on Sunday.

After that the front looks to slowly drift further south through the
rest of this period...with the 00z guidance suite now suggesting the
potential for this to stall out across Pennsylvania on Monday as it
loses its upper support. Were this to happen...some lower-end shower
chances could linger into Monday across the Southern Tier...with
encroaching Canadian high pressure and drier air otherwise providing
us with fair/dry weather.

.AVIATION /08Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Mainly dry weather will continue through early this morning, with
just a few spotty showers possible by shortly after daybreak across
far southwest NY. VFR will prevail in most areas, with the exception
of the western Southern Tier where some MVFR CIGS will continue
across higher terrain.

A cold front will cross the area from west to east today. Abundant
moisture and forcing along and ahead of the front will allow for
showers and a few scattered thunderstorms to increase in coverage
from west to east later this morning through the afternoon. The
timing of best rain coverage will be late morning to mid afternoon
across Western NY (KBUF, KIAG, KJHW), an hour or two later near
KROC, and mid afternoon through early evening east of Lake Ontario
including KART. Coverage of thunder is expected to remain isolated
to widely scattered across Western NY with an early arrival of
clouds and showers limiting instability. More widespread thunder
coverage is expected for a few hours from mid afternoon through
early evening across the eastern Lake Ontario region, where better
instability is expected to develop.

Areas of MVFR CIGS (with some IFR higher terrain) will increase in
coverage later this morning through the afternoon as showers become
more widespread. Expect improvement to mainly VFR during the late
afternoon and evening from west to east following the cold frontal
passage. Overnight, mainly VFR will prevail. A few lake effect rain
showers will develop over and east of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario
with local MVFR.

A cold front will approach and cross the eastern Great Lakes today.
Moderate southwesterlies will continue today, especially on Lake
Erie where winds and waves will likely reach low end Small Craft
Advisory conditions this afternoon and evening along and just behind
the cold front. A period of stronger WSW winds will then develop
Wednesday behind the cold front, with sustained winds on Lake Erie
and Lake Ontario increasing to 20-25 knots, with gusts to 30+ knots.
This will produce a period of higher end Small Craft Advisory
conditions, lasting through Wednesday evening on Lake Erie, and
through Thursday morning on Lake Ontario.

Following the passage of the cold front, a much cooler airmass will
overspread the Lower Lakes Region through midweek. This will lead to
an environment supportive of a chance of waterspouts from late this
evening through Thursday morning. The best chance of waterspouts
will be in and near bands of lake effect clouds and showers where
convergent low level boundaries produce locally enhanced low level
vorticity, which can then be tilted and stretched by lake effect
updrafts.
